so i take it Caesar is the "teacher" and i'm telling him what he can/can't do right? isn't that a bit of a stretched comparison my friend, seeing as i just made the observation, and never questioned what Caesar can or can't do.
No, that's not what I'm saying. I'm merely saying that you're trying to find a way to "fight the system" and rebel against authority.

and my advice was/is, find a real cause.

and maybe I'm wrong to suggest that's what you're doing. In the end, maybe I've had a long day at school and find yours and carmi's complaints really minuscule.

edit; at the end of the day i dont really give a fuck because i dont use the word. i just thought it was slightly funny that we've banned the word which is in like every second line of a rap song.

The word used in rap songs is different than the word banned on this board. In the rap songs you hear....just...why am I explaining this to you, don't you see the difference between black people using it and non-blacks? I don't like either of the words and I don't approve their use even by Black people. But, I pick my battles wisely. I'm not going to go around telling Black people they shouldn't use it.

You think having a constructive discussion on the use of the word will lead to............what?
Something better than what you suggested which is to focus on something else. Remember the symbolic ban of the N-word in New York a way back? What did that accomplish? Not a thing. I'm not supporting the use of the word here, I too get irritated when I see a little punk freely using ethnic slurs. What I'm doing is opposing the censorship because covering up problems doesn't solve anything. And the fact that we've had the "same discussions before" is irreverent because not everyone has read what you've read. I wish for that person who was offended or anyone else to come forward and reply to Da_Funk or whoever and tell him their side of the story --- that is a whole lot better than brushing it under the rug. That's a real cause. We gain from the that. But it seems to me like way too many people have the "it's just an internet forum" type attitude and the problems here just ends when they close the browser window.

"Fight the system" and "real cause" have connotations of me being the champion of our freedom of speech, and gathering people to sign petitions to stop this restriction on our freedom or some shit.

You're totally overstating my intentions, and why i made the thread in the first place. I don't see how you can draw parallels between merely pointing something out, and "fighting the system". Offering an opinion which is masked by the irony is not the same as "fighting the system" and championing a "cause".

My stance is that I don't disagree with Caesar's ban on the word because of basic cost-benefit analysis, to put it simply.

I think you and I don't disagree on the use of the word, you just don't agree with the approach used. Well, that's what I'm hoping anyway. You're looking at the bigger picture, you're trying to make people understand. Merely, I'd just like people to stop. But, it's sad that this "understanding" is needed. Nonetheless, let the discussion begin.

Fair enough.

I still think your analogy is illogical and there's no irony simply because of the difference of a white person saying the N-word, and Black rappers using the word in a different sense with a different spelling.

Is that my cue? I don't really have much to add to the topic of censorship, but I will take this opportunity and be more vocal against use of racial slurs on the board which is a small progress if I say so myself. One small step for S14, one giant leap for SH.com

It'd better if more people were vocal. I know there are plenty of lurkers out there with things to say but they don't. I admit that there aren't many threads to post in but I reckon we're all either the part of the solution or part of the problem as far the activeness of the board goes.

Look its simple, if you really want to use that word then join up with the KKK forum or the white supremacy forum. For what reason does a white person need to use it apart from saying it to piss people off.Would you use the word in everyday life and expect it to be ok? Some of you guys think that by having this word blanked out you are being denied some human right or something. get over it and move on.

the fact that it is being questioned is the dumbest shit ive ever seen. That word being blanked out has no effect on you whatsoever, so who gives a shit?

Be happy we dont censor words like shit and fuck which a lot of other forums and sites do.
Thank you o'masterful overlord for allowing us the freedom to curse without reprocussions.

I cant help but see this as patronizing.
Im so happy you have given us 'kids' the freedom :wondering:

No I would ask my math teacher why did we have to learn trigonometry and all that bs math if it's not useful in our daily lives. She was never able to answer that question so she'd get all pissed.
teach your brain to solve problems with practical and theoretic solutions. there's a reason why educated people aren't only more knowledgable, but also smarter and sharper than uneducated people (as a general rule of thumb with a million exceptions).

Actually you will probably find that these exceptions are very smart and sharp and apply math and trig in the same way as educated people.. they just dont perform will in an educational environment

Did you ask your gym teacher why you had to climb ropes and run around a track if you were never gonna join the olympics?

I assume you know why they taught you all that stuff now?

^ There's a difference with learning certain basics (running a lap, learning basic math) and delving deeper into a subject you're never going to pursue (spear throwing lessons, freaky complicated algebra). I think that's what carmi meant.

As far as this debate is concerned, I agree with S14 wholeheartedly. We (i mean this in the broadest sense possible) don't gain anything from saying "don't do that" and then censoring whatever what was said.
Obviously, I'm not advocating that we should all sling derogatory phrases around (I personally don't care, but that's just me.), but when someone is being an asshole, there's more to gain from explaining why that someone is an asshole to others, than there is to gain by just "making it go away".

Maybe you already got it, but he meant that it's a work-out for the brain. It's good to stay in physical shape and it's also good to stay in mental shape. You don't quite do that with simple basic math or reading a novel, you do it with difficult math that actually requires you to think outside the box. Or similar brainfood where you challenge your own intellect.

Well yeah. The same way an IT specialist or an economist has to study maths. It enhances your thinking process.
Logical thinking, broadening your horizons.

There's a second difference between looking into something to broaden your horizons and being actually judged on how well you know it.

Now I'm the first to say I'm awful at maths, but some of the shit that was thrown at us in high school was preposterous.

Getting off topic though

This statement is a good example of a group of comments that are so far away from being smart that it kinda hurts reading it.

First of all, you are wrong on every level! And its weird because SOFI explained everything quite clearly.

Some of you guys think that by having this word blanked out you are being denied some human right or something
Who did this kind of behaviour? Nobody. And of course do i realise that your comment is not meant to be taken literally, you still wanted to make a point by saying people here are over-reacting in a major way. Which is not the case.

get over it and move on.
Move on with what? Oh yeah, another useless comment.

the fact that it is being questioned is the dumbest shit ive ever seen. That word being blanked out has no effect on you whatsoever, so who gives a shit?
Actually, you can care about things that do not directly affect you. See, if someone here takes action against some kind of behaviour, and you think its wrong, you might care to explain why its wrong. So yes, i give a shit.

Well algebra. How is that essential to my daily life? lol Not useful at all. But it is taught for what Preach said.

Basically I don't see why we, the members, need censorship to refrain from using racial slurs. Are the members here that stupid we need such measures to make them behave?

But, since StreetHop is apparently striving to be the most politically correct hip hop website known to man, how about we make a list of words you CAN'T say so that we don't hurt anybody's feelings ever again.
Bitch- No more use of this word that degrades women, and female dogs, at the same time.
Beaner- We don't want to offend our neighbors to the south, Mexican's are also very big hip hop and rap fans so it is fair to say that we may have a large Mexican base trafficking through StreetHop.
Redneck- Southern rap is also very popular these days. We better not offend anyone from the south with this degrading word.
Whore- People who express themselves sexually may also be fans of rap music, this word should also be banned.
God & Jesus- We can't offend those who are non-religious either, so let's not use any religious words.
Republican & Democrat- We obviously have members of both of these parties, and censoring both of them would be for the better of the board.
No more talking about any countries by name. That could be offensive to anyone living in said country.
Fuck, shit, damn, hell, piss, etc. A lot of people are easily offended by swear words, no more of these either.
No mentioning any other web sites. Our users most definitely go to other sites and possibly work for those sites, so let's not talk about them either.

I think if anyone uses any of these words, they should be banned like Da_Funk. Fair is fair... Let's not step on any toes. Make sure every person gets equal treatment and no one gets their feelings hurt. Do I have to send a personal message about it every time I am offended? Will that get my way?
That's what StreetHop is about now, right?

Apart from math teachers I dont know of many people who use algebra (in its purest form) in their daily lives.

Algebra is know as a 'gatekeeper' subject which basically means that it helps you get into careers while keeping other people who cant do it, out.

It develops absract reasoning which is very hard to develop elsewhere and to some degree, its used in basically every job on the planet.

Most of the time you use it without even realising, like at the bank, grocery store or buying dinner and splitting the check (of course they dont have full classes on such basic stuff) and if it wasnt for school or learning from your parents or whoever you wouldnt know it.

Are the members here that stupid we need such measures to make them behave?
Yes
