Apart from math teachers I dont know of many people who use algebra (in its purest form) in their daily lives.

Algebra is know as a 'gatekeeper' subject which basically means that it helps you get into careers while keeping other people who cant do it, out.

It develops absract reasoning which is very hard to develop elsewhere and to some degree, its used in basically every job on the planet.

Most of the time you use it without even realising, like at the bank, grocery store or buying dinner and splitting the check (of course they dont have full classes on such basic stuff) and if it wasnt for school or learning from your parents or whoever you wouldnt know it.

I'm sure you don't need the difference between basic subtraction and multiplying and actual algebra explained, do you?

Oh, wait...

So working out interest rates on your bank deposit is basic subtration and multiplication?

Anyway, my point was is that it is all algebra in some form and that it develops your reasoning, which basic subtraction etc.. doesnt. Even if you dont actually sit and do formulas in your everyday life.

Its just ignorant to assume that just because it doesnt directly translate to something later on, that it isnt useful

Interest rates is basic multiplying, yes. Or do you work out your interest rates with 5 variable formules?

I agree with the broader perspective, of course. I don't think anyone disputed that. Carmi and me are just saying, there's a line, and sometimes they go over it. Of course this depends on the person, his/her interests, the level of education, the direction of it, the specific school etc etc.
