Depends on which headphones and what is the device you're using. You can as well go for Sennheiser or Koss as far as companies go. There are different models for listening on the go and for home audio.
Arguably, Sennheiser headphones are better value for money and you're more likely to get satisfying sound. There are 50-100$ models that are pretty great for mp3s. Regardless, most people won't tell whether it's 256kbit+ mp3 or WAV even on a good player.

I can't tell the difference between FLAC and a 320kb mp3 on my mp3 player. I used cheap £20 headset too. I save my over ear headphones for my own home.

I will be using the headphones on the bus for maybe 30 minutes a day. After that, I will be sitting down either in my room or in the library and will be watching either lecture videos, occasionally movies, and a good bit of music. On the bus I will be plugged into my iPod. Everywhere else will be on my laptop.

If need be, I can use my SG3's headphones for the bus and the proper headphones for my laptop everywhere else. But I will be spending considerable amount more time with my laptop than with my iPod.

Laptops have crappy sound. Sgs3 (the intl/Exynos version) followed by the iPod will have better sound. Denon headphones make no sense, however. You can look for ~50$ Sennheiser headphones. Better will be an overkill for anything other than decent home audio. For mobile devices look for low impedance headphones.

Yup, The Galaxy S1 and Galaxy S3 have the best audio quality you can get from any mobile device, better than the cheap ass Cirrus DAC Apple is using in their Ipods now. Which might be a little surprising.

BUT, there's that US version with Snapdragon S4 which has a built in Qualcomm's audio chip I believe. If you have that one, it's not that great.

Yeah. I'm saving the phone I'm using now when I upgrade just so I can use it as an mp3 player, the Wolfson DAC + voodoo sound is great
