Kobe Bryant has the index finger of an 83-year-old man

We all remember Kobe Bryant's(notes) 6-24 shooting performance in Game 7 of this year's NBA finals. It was not a very good shooting performance, obviously, as he did not make very many shots but continued to take shots. Basically, it was the very definition of a bad shooting performance, and I heard that Kobe Bryant's face will be added next to that phrase in a completely nonexistent dictionary of basketball terms.

However, while Kobe's shooting wasn't so great, it's pretty easy to forget that he was playing with a severely injured right index finger, also known as the finger most important to shooting. When you remember that little factoid, making any shots with a completely retooled release is impressive. But that's Kobe Bryant for you — doing whatever he can to perform at a high level.

As it turns out, that dedication might have cost Kobe a finger. No, it's not like he's going to lose it, but it's definitely going to be a pain in the hand for the next 50 years of his life. The Orange County Register's Kevin Ding has the tragic tale of the damaged digit.

For Bryant, the sacrifice for success could well be visible for the rest of his career in the form of something that is not another championship ring to go around his finger.

He might never play again without wearing support for his damaged right index finger.

The middle knuckle on that critical finger on Bryant's shooting hand is so debilitated by arthritis after the past season of misuse and overuse that there may be no real way to fix it. Bryant will consult with specialists in July to figure out his options, but arthritis is not a problem that can just be cleaned up with arthroscopic surgery or wished away with a little rest.

Yikes. The old broken finger that turns arthritic is never fun, especially in the two very similar fields of NBA basketball and blogging. We've lost a lot of good men out there, mostly from arthritic fingers.

Seriously, though, playing through an injury is hard enough for anyone in any sport. But playing through an injury to your index finger on your shooting hand in a sport that requires constant use of that finger and hand? That's definitely not amoré, Dino. That's constant pain 82 times a season, plus the playoffs, for another five years, at least. Like I said before, yikes.

So when Jordan Farmar(notes) leaves the Lakers this summer, don't be curious as to why. Just remember that he's the one who threw the errant pass that led to Kobe's busted knuckle. We know Kobe holds grudges, so it's only logical to assume his finger does too.

Off topic...but you mentioned Beats by Dre ... are you watching the World Cup ?? like every player is using Beats by Dre or Boose. They getting mad marketing air time, every time they zoom in some player they using either one
It's true, I've noticed that. Things have come a long way. Remember when it was iPod earphones that dominated those moments?

I read in a Brazilian website that Kobe Bryant's index finger is really fucked up, and its gonna be tuff to heal.
And maybe, impossible!
In ref to the article Yak put up, that's some crazy stuff. I don't think anyone should play through an injury and this just goes to show. I see plenty of kids these days saying they can play through injury or flu (courtesy of the MJ legend). I tell them to stop being unreasonable. They don't even have the same fitness regimes as the pros. What makes them think their computer game playing generation knows anything about fitness? Is a championship ring worth a sports injury for life? I'll say no way.

oh also I had a dream Lebron stayed in Cleveland.
LOL!

JULY 1st!! It better live up to the free agent hype. This is all I hope for:

1) Phil Jackson to stay with the Lakers.

2) Lebron to leave the Cavs. I just want to torment my friends that support the Cavs coz of him :)

Amar’e Stoudemire(notes) and the New York Knicks are making progress in talks on a five-year maximum guaranteed contract and a deal could be completed as soon as Friday, league sources told Y! Sports.

The framework of a deal is in place and the two sides are expected to talk again soon, sources said.

Stoudemire’s departure from the Suns was all but clinched after the Phoenix Suns reached agreement with forward Hakim Warrick(notes) on a four-year, $18 million contract , league sources said.
i wonder how amare will do without nash throwin him the passes.

Cleveland Cavaliers confirm hiring of Byron Scott as new coach
great coach but hes always had a superstar pg. kidd/cp3.

Here's what I hear from yesterday: LeBron interested in Nets pitch but not so much NY. NY trying at moment to secure Amare' to help cause

reading the Kobe index finger story..he could have had surgery on it. BUT NO mr workhouse took no time off and had to play for the olympics. instead of healing your body. and so what if he missed the olympics he would have been on the 2012 roster. you gotta take care of your body first.

i see lakers picked up Blake today to replace Farmar, i would have rather gotten Miller. but Blake should pan out for us. im surprised that Wade is interested in the Bulls

is anybody seeing Brian Shaw taking over for Phil after this season. IF he decides to call it quits. i mean if LA wins wouldnt Phil come back for a 4-peat??

Lebron received this from Chicago. No drama really, just a marketing initiative by a Chicago ad agency.

^bold move by the bulls. theyre sayin lebrons gonna make an announcement this monday i think.

League sources said yesterday that the Celts have expressed trade interest in guards Leandro Barbosa of Phoenix and Rudy Fernandez of Portland. Boston Herald
i like both players. i wish the spurs can make move for rudy fernandez.

When Stoudemire becomes official, it would end the five-year era of David Lee, but set up a possibility of a sign-and-trade to add another piece. There's been rumors of a three-way trade talk between Golden State, Minnesota and the Knicks where Lee winds up with the Timberwolves, Monta Ellis comes to the Knicks and Al Jefferson goes to Golden State. Lee visited Minnesota yesterday and it has only $7 million in cap room, meaning he'd want a sign-and-trade. New York Post
knicks are tryna create an nba live team? lol. they need a passing pg.

Joe Johnson and the Hawks have agreed on a new six-year deal worth approximately $119 million, according to his agent.
huge L for the hawks. yall paid a single dimentional player who disappears in the playoffs that much money. reminds me of the gilbert arenas contract.

That's a horrible contract that we'll be talking about every time he has a bad game :D

Nice tribute to Derek Fisher.

Man I hate the Celtics :suspicious:
