The last thread kinda didn't work because there was no real commentary, people just threw up links and left.

So, new rule.

Before you post what you are listening to RIGHT NOW, you must comment (with at least a couple of sentences) on the last song posted by someone else. Sound cool? This way, hopefully we'll all have more of an incentive to check out what others are listening to.

I'll start.

Screaming Trees, great track, Dukie, thanks for posting!

Good!

Next:

Four corners of a dream
Ain't exactly what it seems
Transparent, hands of time
God damn, you know I robbed myself blind

Stole what was mine
It's all mine
Give it back
I left it behind
I don't mind

Can't believe what they said
Disturbed in my head
Left alone and left tired
Sleep's a dream
And everyone's wired

I stole what was mine
It's all mine
Give it back
I left it behind
I don't mind

I stole what was mine
It's all mine
Give it back
It's mine
It's all mine

Lost days
Where the fuck have I been
No end and nowhere to begin
Where the fuck have I been
I got no time for time
I got no time for time
Lost days
Where the fuck have I been

"You Are In My System" by The System:

Shockingly eighties but quite funky. Not too sure about the dance moves, tho lol. And it's a bit dweepy lovesongish, but in general I do like the funky beats. I must admit I did not finish listening the song entirely, I got the idea around 2:30. Beats were nice, singing, not a big fan. Lyrics, meh. Dweepy lovesong :D

Witness by Screaming Trees (Mark Lanegan)

It's taken everything
Everything I got and it's hung me on the line
Water rising up over me
And I think I'm gonna die
Think I'm gonna die

I told a lie
That's what I said
I told the one you know I'll always keep
Whose God is mine (3x's)
Whose God is
The one with the witness

Shine your lonely light on me
I'll be there to hold the mirror
I can take you down with me
Show you lonely, lonely, lonely

Death wastes no time it seems
And it's hung me on the line
Hung me on the line
Hard rain falling all over me
And I think I'm gonna die
Think I'm gonna die

I told a lie
That's what I said
I told the one you know I'll always keep
Whose God is mine (3x's)
Whose God is
The one with the witness
Shine.......

Shockingly eighties but quite funky.
What's interesting is that before this track and Prince's "1999" album, both of which came out in 1982, Pop/R&B didn't sound anything like this. The System were the founding fathers of using electronic and MIDI equipment to make R&B music and this was their first hit, so it's absolutely a milestone in music history. It's cool that you pick up on the sound as being "Eighties" as The System went on to produce a whole host of classic 80's songs in the same vein, like Phil Collins "Sussudio", Mtume's "Juicy Fruit" (as sampled by Biggie), Chaka Khan's "I Feel For You" and of course many hits of their own including "Don't Disturb This Groove" (which a few people on here might recognise as the basis of 2Pac's "Lost Souls").

I must admit I've never listened to Nick Oliveri's solo material before, but I have a sort of bias against him because one of my bandmates is a huge fan and is always banging on about it. Of course, I'm a QOTSA fan, but this doesn't appear to have much in common with QOTSA by the sounds of it although you can hear what his influence in the band was, and it's pretty evident that if you add this song to recent QOTSA material, you get the combination of Nick and Josh which is what made the old QOTSA stuff like "Songs For The Deaf" work as well as it did. It's not bad, although 2 and a half minutes in, it begins to drag. But then the guitar solo lifts! Excellent. Lyrically paranoid which is always enjoyable. I hear a grunge influence in here. Overall, I like.

Ugh, I'm certainly not a fan of that. Good lyrics, but the singing is very, I don't know how to call it, unfocused? Unstreamlined? I don't mean her voice but the pace of the singing and such. The music is also very simple with practically no variation. It doesn't feel like the song is going anywhere, feels very incoherent. So yeah, that one is not for me, lol.

I didn't know that about The System. I'm running through a few songs of theirs now on Tube. Coming to America is cool (so is the movie :D), i like their funky beats, i don't like the fact that so many of the songs are sappy love-you-so-much-gurrrl tunes. They could've spiced it up. I still love the funky beats, though.

The Mondo Generator song actually has Lanegan doing the singing, Olivieri just does the chorus on that one.

Ah, I love Joni and I think that song is absolute genius, but I very much understand that she is an acquired taste, much like her male counterpart, Bob Dylan.

Lyrically The System didn't vary much, you're right. Check out "The Pleasure Seekers", though, that's not a love song, it's a more hedonistic vibe. I believe it was even featured on an episide of "Miami Vice" which is just perfect. I have all of The System's albums though, and the songs that varied more from their standard M.O were generally not released as singles and aren't as well known. I don't know if their tracks "Did In By A Friend" or "My Radio Rocks" are on YouTube, but those are two that come to mind that aren't love songs.

Moving on...

I went through a big Smashing Pumpkins phase maybe three years ago when I had pretty much their entire discography on repeat for a while. I really like them, but it's not the same any more without James Iha. Their new music lacks something. Billy seems to think he is Trent Reznor and that SP was always just him, but listening to the new stuff, that's clearly not the case. Oh well. Don't know when this track is from, I actually don't remember hearing this one before.... I don't remember it being on any of their official albums....guess it slipped under my radar. Sounds very mid 90's though, if I had to date it, I'd say it was from the Melon Collie sessions. That's without looking it up, so I hope I'm right on that one lol. This song needed an edit, lol. Still, it didn't start to drag for me until 6 minutes or so, so that's pretty good going. Overall pretty standard SP material, although even their standard material during the 90's was pretty damn good. Good post.

Here's another 80's throwback for ya.

Ha, we had that one in the music quiz a few weeks ago. My mates all had blank stares but I had it down after 4 notes. Not that I listen to the song 5 times a day, but yeah it's alright. A lot more interesting than most "i like this girl so much" songs cos of the fact that the girl is Jessie's. Song has some pace to it as well, I really like that. It's not sappy, which is often a dealbreaker for me.

The Aeroplane Flies High is a five-disc box set released by The Smashing Pumpkins in 1996. It contains expanded versions of the five singles from their album Mellon Collie and the Infinite Sadness and also included a 44-page booklet with pictures and writings by the band's lead singer Billy Corgan, as well as lyrics
Seems you were right :)

Did In By A Friend isn't on Tube but Radio Rocks is, it's cool.

I downloaded a bunch of 70's, 80's compilation albums as music quiz training, hehe. There are some good songs on those. Also some horrible ones, but ok. Let's stay rooted solidly in the 80's with this one (I'm guessing you know it)

Reply to Da_Funk, post skipping again

Obviously the title track of Disintegration, which to me is probably their best album. Robert Smith doesn't have the greatest voice in the world but this is the best use of his voice and none of his weaknesses shine through. I think this song has the best combination of the energy and power of their post-punk side (mostly in the drums and bass) and the soft melancholy of their gothic rock side. Even the keyboards don't have the typical 80s cheesiness to it.

It might be a good idea to post two songs. Get some more music in here and people can choose to make a comment about 1 song or both. So I'm posting two, if anyone doesn't like the idea... FUCK YOU :(

Katatonia - Dispossession
Alternative rock very much leaning towards gothic. The influence of The Cure should be obvious in their music.

Opeth - Windowpane
A one-off progressive rock album by metal band Opeth. Live version

I don't like this song. I'm probably going to get hated on for saying this but I prefer Tom Cochrane's solo stuff as opposed to his songs with red rider. Big leagues being the best of the best but it is so over played here that it is hard to listen to i anymore.

Now, about the 80's. This is weird decade of music for me. Some of it is beyond awesome (Metallica, Crue, Joy Division, The Cure to name a few) but overall I despise this decade of music. The majority of it sounds too overproduced to my ear, and because of that it sounds so plastic and fake. I get the impression that the 80's was more about entertainment than actual music quality. Granted, I don't have near the knowledge of you, Duke, or Casey so feel free to school me.

But to keep on with your 80s music:

Fuck you Chronic, I wanted to talk about "Disintegration" - my favorite Cure album, been meaning to pick up the new 3 disc deluxe set of it for a while. You summed the track up pretty well though, I don't have much more to add lol.

Anyhoo, that Katatonia song is pretty good. You're right, very obvious Cure influence although the vocalist isn't as strong as Robert. He's good but his vocals aren't really standing out much from the music. The riffs on the chorus are much better than on the verses.

I'll leave this song up to someone else, great song though and one of my favs from that album. Anyway, what do you think of the 2 song idea? Post 2, people can choose which one they comment on. Same rules, just a bit more music.

I didn't even know a bunch NIN shit got remastered, that's cool. Don't really have much to say about that track, not one of my favorites by them. I like the darker side of Trent Reznor more I suppose, well not sdie but sound.

All 3 are incredibly different, but they're some of my favorites, they just came on in order on my ipod, i got excited.

Nina Simone is obviously great. The song you posted happens to be one of my favorite things. I just had to turn off the Strokes and listen to the whole thing. Now, I'll trade that time I just gave Nina Simone for you to give the Strokes some.

It is a bit slow for my taste but I like it Hizzle. In general i like the trance type techno. People like tiesto and armin vaan buuren. You should link me some more of that stuff. My brother loves this type of music but he's back at home until an undetermined date. He left me a cd full of it, but i have no idea who it is by or what the songs are called which is unfortunate because I blast the cd every time I`m driving.

Chronic: I love Opeth. Most people I know haven't heard of them and/or don't like their music.

Da Funk: Certainly not bad.. I would listen to it if it popped up on Last.FM.. but I wouldn't add it to my iPod.. just not for me.

Keeping with Opeth, since I went back to Chronic's post, my fav song from them:

Opeth: Harvest

And the song that has me raping the repeat button right now...

Muse: Take A Bow

^Funny, I feel the same way about these two songs. Just not my taste is all.

This is my jam at the moment. How fucked up is that
