It's funny how an Eminem discussion is the only time some people make their way into the rap section of the forum
Not really, Eminem is a pop musician, not a hiphop act, no matter how much he would try to defend it. Eminem even has a song on the album about breaking up with the "hip-hop game".

Besides, people's taste evolve but the music you grew up on will always be special to you. Those artists will always be special to you, regardless of your favorite genre.

I think it's funny however that people with no interest in hiphop still visit a hiphop oriented forum, but that's a diff discussion.

^i don't follow hip hop as much as i used to and therefore don't feel the need to post in most threads. i do visit from time to time, but most of the time don't post since i do not know enough about such and such artist to make a comment.

I grew up listening to hip hop and appreciated different artists and styles, nowadays I very rarely listen to it, but I have and will most probably buy all future Eminem albums.

Hip-Hop is still what it was...it's no secret, this forum is just pretty lame when it comes to the music aspect of it all. And no I don't care to try to do anything about it

Eminem is not a hiphop act but a pop musician? Explain.
If I say "EPMD" some people will go "good shit" because they grew up on it. If I say Company Flow I personally want to cum a little because it's dope shit. If I say Eminem, pretty much anyone in the modern world knows who I'm talking about. I'm not saying underground hip-hop is real hip-hop and popular hip-hop isn't, I'm saying that pop music is not a genre. It's whatever is on MTV or Spotify, from Eminem to Janet Jackson to Britney Spears.

Pop Music is popular music. If you sell 500,000 units you are popular.

Can you be pop music and hip-hop music. Why not? Hip-hop music = rap. Anyone who is rapping is hip-hop.

There you go, I have defined it for you all.

No. You know better than this.

What about a band like Faithless? Maxi Jazz is a rapper, but their music is not hip-hop.

Skibadee raps. But his music is drum 'n bass. Not hip-hop.

I could give a million more examples.

something is wrong when garbage rappers go plat or even gold
Bad music has always sold, since day one. A bad rapper going gold or plat doesn't mean a thing.

Not that it really means anything but this is a pretty good album form Eminem, what do people think it will sell? There isn't one of his catchy songs on this, thankfully, so do you think it will sell much?

^ Every Em album will sell much. Plus there's at least 3 hit songs on this one. I'm Not Afraid is definitely catchy. I heard a girl at work singing the chorus part so I finished it with her. But she didn't know one word of his rap. The chorus parts of these songs by Em or others is what has the potential to sell it to the girls, and he knows that. The Rhianna collaboration is definitely gonna chart.

How can anyone say the beats on Relapse are better!? This blows my mind. This album is better musically and lyrically. I've listened to this album front to back probably more than anyone on here (20+) and I'm CONVINCED that not only does it have more replay value than all of his other albums, but it's also better than any of his other albums.

"25 to Life" is the best song on here, imo. It's a masterpiece as far as Em songs go. I can't listen to it enough. The beat and sampling is just sick, the rap, the flow, the female singing, all top-notch. My legs won't keep still listening to this.

This is stupid, Preach. As Pittsey points out, the two are not mutually exclusive. While I agree that Eminem is a "pop" musician simply because of his celebrity status and album sales, he is still, down in the core, a bad-ass fucking MC. That is extremely evident on this album where he rips beats to shreds and raps just for the sake/love of rapping. So fuck your "he is this, he isn't this" stuff. It's not necessary.

The simple fact of the matter is, Eminem is a rapper who everyone pays attention to, haters and fans alike. On this forum, we have a lot of people who signed up when Eminem was on top of the world and we also have a lot of white people. And, most obviously, he's just fucking talented enough to warrant the discussion. It is not hard to figure out why this thread gets replies and others don't.

Also, it's important to note, for the sake of the overall discussion, that Eminem is versatile enough that he's attained fans for different reasons. I think that distinction is most evident in how people choose to rate this album relative to his others. While I still maintain that this album doesn't beat SSLP, MMLP, and TES, I'll understand when others like Skittle make that assertion. Five days ago, for example, I'd have refused a discussion on it.
