Bynum could play, and start, for Lakers Thursday

Los Angeles Lakers center Andrew Bynum missed his 31st game Sunday, but it may be the last one he skips. According to the Los Angeles Times, Bynum could play Thursday at home against the Denver Nuggets.

Bynum is recovering from a torn medical collateral ligament in his right knee. Lakers coach Phil Jackson said Bynum will participate in more five-on-five drills Monday in practice. But when he does return, it will not be off the bench.

"I kind of envision him going back as a starter again, just because he's got an injury that takes some activation still," said Jackson, who emphasized the need to keep Bynum warm after pregame warmups, "[to have] him active at the beginning . . . [for] a six- or seven-minute run in the early part. But we'll decide that when we get close to that."

The San Antonio Spurs today announced that guard Manu Ginobili will miss the remainder of the 2008-09 regular season as well as the 2009 NBA Playoffs.

Ginobili felt stiffness in his lower right leg during the Spurs-Cavaliers game in Cleveland on Sunday afternoon. Following the game he returned to San Antonio. Earlier today, in San Antonio, he underwent a CT scan and an MRI. The examinations showed an increased marrow edema and a stress fracture in his right distal fibula.

No timeline has been determined for Ginobili’s return to the court.

Andrew Bynum again took part in a five-on-five scrimmage at the Los Angeles Lakers center and said he planned to come back Sunday against Memphis or next Tuesday against Utah, according to the Los Angeles Times.

"I'm feeling good, feeling great," Bynum said. "No pain, no swelling. The only thing I'm limited by is just I've been out of the game for a little while so I'm going to have to get my timing back. Couple of things, I'm reacting a little bit late, but other than that, I'm ready to go."

Kobe Bryant said he was not worried that there might be an adjustment period when Bynum returns.

"He looked strong, he looks active, he looks good," Bryant said. "He'll blend right in, similar to when we added Pau [Gasol]to the mix [last season]. He just fits so well with what we do. I don't think it'll be a problem at all."
