World Cup 2006

UPDATE:

Materazzi admits to insulting Zidane.

Materazzi said 'I held his shirt for a few seconds only, then he turned to me and talked to me, jeering. He looked at me with a huge arrogance and said, `If you really want my shirt I'll give it to you afterwards'. I replied with an insult, that's true.'

Materazzi has not elaborated on what he did say, but one report suggested he responded with: 'I'd rather take the shirt off your wife'.

He has denied, however, some of the more vile insults referring to his wife or sister or calling him a terrorist.

'It was one of those insults you're told dozens of times and that you often let fall on a pitch,' Materazzi said.

What do you all think now?

Peace~

And he told the news last night that he didn't even insult Zidane. He even said he called his father and told him he didn't know why Zidane rhino'd his ass. Materazzi will never really fess up to what he really said imo.

Here's what Skynews has reported..

What Made Zizou See Red

Updated: 13:50, Tuesday July 11, 2006

A lip-reader has reportedly revealed the words which provoked Zinedine Zidane's now infamous World Cup final headbutt.

Marianne Frere claims Italian defender Marco Materazzi insulted the French captain with a stream of racial and personal abuse.

She told The Sun that Zidane was called a "son of a terrorist whore" before he lashed out and was sent off.

Reports in France have suggested it was the reference to the Algerian-born star's mother which made him blow his top.

His mother Malika had been taken to hospital seriously ill only hours before Sunday's final.

Zidane's agent Alain Miglaccio said the player had told him a 'very serious' comment had been made during the match.

Italian news agency Ansa quoted Materazzi as saying: "It is absolutely not true, I did not call him a terrorist.

"I'm ignorant. I don't even know what the word means."

Italy won the match 5-3 on penalties, with Zidane missing the shoot-out in his final match before retirement.

BBC news. (following Thug's post)

BBC Radio Five Live asked for help from a deaf lip reader, Jessica Rees, who read the words phonetically to an Italian translator.

She deciphered the insult as being "you're the son of a terrorist whore" - a translation also carried by many national newspapers in Britain on Tuesday.

The BBC's Ten O'Clock News also called in experts to study the television footage of the incident and determined the following:

Materazzi's first word to Zidane was "no" before he then told him to "calm down".

He then accused him of being a "liar" and wished "an ugly death to you and your family" on the day the Frenchman's mother had been taken to hospital ill. This was followed by "Go f*** yourself".

Zidane's agent, Alain Migliaccio, has hinted that Zidane will soon reveal exactly what was said by Materazzi.

Piara Powar, national co-ordinator for the anti-racism group Kick It Out told Five Live, said: "If there was a racial slur then Fifa needs to act."

Keith Hackett, head of referees in England, said that if it can be proved that Matterazzi racially abused the Frenchman, then Fifa should take retrospective action for "the good of the game."

So as you can see, it can go either way, but the view that he was called a terrorist has been going around alot more than a personal insult to his wife.

Finally....

Zidane's agent says footballer will explain headbutting
Lara Marlowe in Paris

What did the Italian central defender Marco Materazzi say to the French captain Zinédine Zidane which so enraged him that he headbutted the Italian and was expelled from the World Cup final, probably causing France's defeat?

At least three versions of Materazzi's assumed insult circulated yesterday. Zidane's agent Alain Migliaccio maintained he was "provoked", but said Zidane "will not reveal what Materazzi said to him". Migliaccio nonetheless promised that Zidane "will in one or two days' time explain why he had such a reaction" in Sunday's final.

The anti-racism group SOS-Racisme said that "according to several very well-informed sources from the world of football" Materazzi called Zidane a "dirty terrorist" - something Materazzi was reported last night to have denied. Zidane's parents are Algerian immigrants and he campaigns against racism.

The Brazilian newspaper Globo showed the video to three deaf and mute teenagers who are skilled at lip-reading. They believe Materazzi said, "Tua sorella è una puttana" (your sister is a prostitute), followed by an obscene gesture. The French website Sport.fr said the latter version was confirmed by a source close to Zidane.

Last night, BBC Newsnight reported that Materazzi wished death on Zidane's family (the French player's mother was hospitalised on the day of the final) and dismissed him with a profanity. Another report was that Materazzi said: "I slept with your mother last night."

French commentators were divided between those who saw the headbutt as a sign of Zidane's humanity and still considered him a hero, and those who found his loss of self-control inexcusable.

President Jacques Chirac was among the former. He and his wife Bernadette invited the French team and their wives to the Élysée Palace for lunch yesterday. "Dear Zinédine Zidane," Mr Chirac said. "In the most intense - perhaps difficult - moment of your career, I want to tell you of the affection and admiration of the entire nation. You are a virtuoso, a genius of world football. You are also a man with a heart, a man of commitment and conviction. That is why France admires and loves you."

Italian have a history of controversy so it's hard for people to take them serious, especially since their first 2 world cups in the 30s have been seen as being 'fixed' by Mussolini and there has been facts to back that one up and alot of people will remember the controvery surrounding 1982 with Rossi being put back into the lineup when he was clearly not allowed to. (He scored 2-3 goals to win the world cup that's why), so you can't blame people to have mixed feelings about the Italian team.
And what about the recent scandal in the Serie A? That won't help them to keep their image in the world. UEFA seriously consider the possibility to took from them organisation of the European Championship because of this match fixing fame.
When I speak this, I must say that I'm die-hard Juventus fan and I'm hoping that they'll come clear and stronger from this situation. I blame Berlusconi for all the mess.
At the end, I want to clear something. I just think that the World expect from the Italians to play on the higher level (they are more than capable to do that) but they are stubborn and still continue to play defensively. That's why so many people dislike them. Personally, sometimes I cheer for them but they are destroying the beauty which this game has.

Here's a question for you guys...

Do you prefer the extra time rule, or the old time golden goal rule? There are good arguments for both..

I'm curious to know what 'yall think. I'm heading to bed now, so I'll check it out tormorrow what was said.
I will go with a extra time rule. It's more fair. I was so disappointed when the Czech Republic lost in the finals in the 1996 from the Germans thanks to the Oliver Bierhoff goal.

After I read this, I'm 90% sure that Materazzi told exactly this. If this turned to be true he'll face serious fine. They'll fine Zidane too. How much of fair play we saw on this tournament.

I'm surprized to see nobody bringing up Eric Cantona though. He dropped kicked a fan who was throwing anti french remarks to him and now he does commercials and seen as one of the best players to ever step onto the field. lol :thumb:

Joga Bonito mes amis. ;)

^ Yeees! 'The Red Eric'... He's the only Manchester United player that I ever liked. :) I remember that he also fought with a policemans in the tunnel of the stadium when they played in the Istanbul against Galatasaray.

Enough with the drama. Here are the pics i took here close to where i live. This is a Italian neighborhood here in Brooklyn. As soon as the game was over, people ran out outside and started wilding out.:)

So what do you think players should do? Maybe all the players on the park could be gagged so they cant talk? You dont find trash talking any better than slamming your forehead into someones chest:confused:

This is football folks! Players wind eachother up.
Trash talking on a personal level, yes. I dont understand it, how is calling someones wife a whore, calling someone a terrorist, wishing death on someones mother - whatever was said, proving who is the better player, the better team? Also I heard he pinched his nipple too, those kind of tactics I'm not a fan of either. Trash talking about each other skills is different but on the personal level it needs to be dealt with, I dont know how to stop it I'm just saying it shouldnt be accepted as part of any game.

Why is it when people speculate what the Italian said was racial you bring up that its all rumour, then your more than willing to say "materazzi was talking about ZZ wife! It's all pointless."?? I agree though, well done Italy.
