World Cup 2006

nah they won't do that ever.

Though it should have never been a red card, I said this right when it happened, no official saw it, not even people in the stands, so they should look and address the fact that officials should never ever, under no circumstances listen to players or review replays ever again.

Croatian FA sacks 'Cico' Kranjcar
Reuters

Croatian national team failure to go past the 2006 World Cup Group Stage has fully fallen on the back of their coach Zlatko Kranjcar. At the Croatian Football Association meeting that took place this Friday, the Executive Board has ruled out the possibility of Kranjcar remaining at the helm of the squad. Therefore, after tension that lasted a couple weeks, it's official that the former Dinamo Zagreb legend is no longer the chief of the Croatian national team.

Without a win at the World Cup
Although Croatia finished first in their European Zone Qualifying Group 8, leaving teams such as Sweden, Bulgaria, and Hungary behind them with 7 wins, 3 draw results and 0 defeats, the "Vatreni" didn't sign in a single win at the World Cup. In their first appearance against Brazil, Croatians made an impressive performance but still lost 1:0, while in their two other displays, they only won two points from duels with Japan (0:0), and Australia (2:2).

Name of new chief unknown
The name of the man who will be Kranjcar successors is yet to be determined. Croatian FA chairman Vlatko Markovic said that his Associations is financially powerful enough to bring in even a foreign coach if needed, however he revealed that he would prefer a Croatian chief. The first man of Croatian football indicated that Kranjcar's heir should be known in the next eight days.

DID anyone else notice during the WC final presentation ceremony, whilst Raymond Domenech was receiving his medal, the woman on the right was pocketing a medal? That was Zidane's medal.

I dont think it was wrong that Zidane was sent off, from everything we can see he should have been. But I think the truth needs to come out, if for anything so that Italy can claim the Cup fully and all this can be over with.

Do you really think the italions care? They have claimed the WC fully! There the WORLD CHAMPIONS!!!

I would have more respect for ZZ if at the end of the match he just made no excuses for his behaviour, and just said sorry.

I have no doubt that there would be a little bit of bitterness in all the controversy over it, just like we've seen in this thread the past times they have won its been in controversal situations I would be shocked if the Italians didnt want this all sorted out.

ROME (AP) - Former Italy and AC Milan midfielder Roberto Donadoni was chosen Thursday as the new Italy coach.

The Italian soccer federation named Donadoni, 42, to replace Marcello Lippi, who resigned Wednesday despite widespread calls to stay after guiding the Azzurri to their fourth World Cup title on Sunday.

Donadoni will hold a news conference on Tuesday. Italian soccer federation chief Guido Rossi made the appointment, the federation said in a statement.

As a player, Donadoni scored 21 goals in 339 Serie A appearances, and 5 goals in 63 games for Italy.

After retiring, Donadoni coached Lecco in Serie C1 from 2001-2, before moving to Serie B clubs Livorno from 2002-2003 and Genoa from 2003-04.

He returned to Livorno, by then in Serie A, mid-season in 2005 and led them to an unexpectedly high ninth-place finish. But he left the club just 24 days into the 2005-06 season, with Livorno sixth, after criticism from the club chairman.

Considered by many as one of Italy's best soccer players in recent decades, Donadoni started his career in Serie A with Atalanta Bergamo in 1984.

He transferred to AC Milan in 1986 after being spotted by the club's owner and future Italian premier, Silvio Berlusconi. During Donadoni's decade with the team, Milan won five Serie A titles, three European Cups, three European Super Cups and two Intercontinental Cups. Fans nicknamed him `Dona.'

As a member of Italy's national team, he played in World Cups in 1990, when Italy finished third, and again in 1994, when Italy lost the final to Brazil in a penalty shootout.

At 33, Donadoni went to play in the United States for the New York MetroStars for two seasons, returning in 1997 to AC Milan, where he remained for two years. His last stint as a player was in the United Arab Emirates, where he played for l'al Ittihad. He retired as a player in 2000.

Roberto Donadoni the next Italy coach huh?

I never really liked Marcelo Lippi because he wouldn't let Baggio play lol.

Err, both Baggios are dinosaurs by now? Lippi's been coach for two years?

Ergo, it's not that weird he's not letting 35yr old players play?

Besides your on-point reason, Lippi's decision also makes sense why Baggio did not take any part of taking a penalty kick. Hearts could be broken once more....

ZURICH, Switzerland (AP) - FIFA's disciplinary panel will deliver its verdict Thursday on Zinedine Zidane's World Cup final head-butt on Marco Materazzi and subsequent red card.

FIFA is investigating the conduct of both players, although it has declined to speculate on possible punishments.

Zidane will appear in person at the closed hearings at FIFA's Zurich headquarters. The former France captain has already given a written statement and will deliver oral testimony to the panel Thursday, said FIFA spokesman Andreas Herren.

Materazzi appeared last week before the disciplinary committee to answer questions about what he did to provoke Zidane.

''The disciplinary panel will meet as of nine in the morning and through into the afternoon,'' Herren said. ''The only person to appear before the panel tomorrow will be Zinedine Zidane.''

Zidane, who has now retired from soccer, was sent off for ramming his head into the defender's chest in extra time of the July 9 final in Berlin.

The match was drawn 1-1 with Italy winning 5-3 on penalties.

Zidane has said on French television that Materazzi insulted his mother and sister.

Materazzi has admitted insulting Zidane, but denied verbally attacking Zidane's mother.

FIFA will make the verdict public Thursday after the panel has heard the testimony and reached a decision and both parties have been informed.

France defender Lilian Thuram disagreed with Zidane's head-butt, but said the Materazzi was hurting soccer by provoking him.

''Materazzi insulted his family. I understand that Zidane reacted. But not on the field, not on the field,'' Thuram said in an interview in the French weekly Les Inrockuptibles. ''This type of player is a sickness. It shouldn't exist . . . Materazzi gives a negative image to soccer.''

French President Jacques Chirac called Zidane's head-butt ''unacceptable'' last week, but said that something must have provoked it.

Parreira steps down as Brazil coach

RIO DE JANEIRO, Brazil (Ticker) - Carlos Alberto Parreira has resigned as coach of Brazil.

Parreira met with Brazilian Football Federation (CBF) president Ricardo Teixeira on Wednesday morning and news of his decision to stand down came shortly afterward.

The 63-year-old led Brazil to World Cup glory in 1994 in his second spell in charge but his third was less successful, with his side bowing out of the 2006 World Cup to France in the quarterfinals.

I was talking about old days. When Lippi was coach of AC Milan and Italy too i think,he wouldn't let Baggio play for most parts. They had problems with each other.

Did Scolari steped down as Portugees coach?

I hope he does if he didn't already. He is the best coach right now in my opinion.I hope he steps down and takes over Brazil again for run in S.Africa :) I can already predict this time around Brazil is really going to win.Africa=hot weather which Brazil is used to it.Ronaldinho didn't do anything in this tournament so i think he'll do much better in 2010.Adriano and Kaka will be in their primes and will do much better hopefully.

Nah man, if memory serves correctly, Scolari had recently signed a further 2 years contract extension. I guess they going to review his performance from now on and during the European Championships.

Peace~
