It's bad

I have never had that feeling when I disliked ALL mainstream rappers. I mean there's not even a single video on mtv, not a single song on the radio, not a single modern "big" album I like. I think I just don't like rap. The thing is that I always considered myself a hip-hop head and I see that I'm so behind, I think I don't even like hip-hop anymore. I like something I have in my mind and I always thought that it's hip-hop while it turns out that everything evolved into something I dislike. That poll "What will you get on Nov24" :
Kanye West, Ludacris or 50 cent Damn!
I dislike them all. It's really bad, when hip-hop went shitty in 2000 I thought that it can't get worse, from that moment I only hated it more and more. Now based on my experiences I know that it can get worse. It sucks :(
So if 50 cent, Lil Wayne, Kanye etc. consider themselves to be real hip-hop then maybe what I'm listening to is not even hip-hop? Because number of albums I like keeps falling quickly with every year. Something I considered to be hip-hop is dying.
Even rappers like Snoop or Nas - those I considered to be hip-hop. Now I end up bitching about how shitty they got. Do I hate hip-hop?
Am I living in fantasy that something that I listen to is better and "more real"?

I agree. i have lost interest in it nowadays. I like Lupe Fiasco. I know he has been out there for a few years now though. Nas's last album was good. I dunno what is happening with OB4CL2 and Dre's album. But there is very little to get excited about. Lil Wayne is garbage imo. Are people rate him so highly right in the head? Kanye has taken a different direction with his new album. Ilike the songs i have heard so far. Never liked Ludacris and 50 Cent is pure and utter shit.

i understand completely how you feel.... Like you, i thought in or about 2000 that it would get better but i was wrong,,,, Lil Wayne sounds like somebody dying on the mic... I just dont know how people can like the voice he uses to rap.... Kanye, i never will even give a chance because i refuse to support somebody that has such a piss poor attitude... 50 hasnt had a song that i liked since his first album,,, i live on the east coast but i really think if rappers in the west would step up it would get better

I see where you're coming from to a certain extent. There is a lot of bad rap out there like Soulja Boy garbage. I'm not big on 50, Ludacris, etc. However, I still love a lot of hip hop. I'm really anticipating the new Eminem. I love Lil Wayne, Kanye, Young Buck. Game and Lupe's last efforts disappointed me, but I still enjoy their music. I like Sheek and Killah Priest. I got a lot of love for Nas and Jay Z. I was very impressed by the new T.I. cd. If you like rap, there's still some really good shit out there, although I understand it can be hard to find amid the trash.

okay there are rappers I like: O.C., Killah Priest, Wu-tang, BCC and actually many others but it's really rare to hear something about them in mainstream media these days. Actually currently I have a feeling that "hip-hop" is elsewhere. Videos with lil wayne or 50 cent - that's what people are talking about and that's what is "hip-hop" these days.
I would love it if someone separated hip-hop as it was meant to be from that "new" mainstream stuff and called it differently.

^^i was thinking the same thing the other day while watching one of the music channels. They were counting down their top 10 "hip hop" records and they had songs from artists like T-Pain and Chris Brown thrown in there.

its debatable. most rap is rubbish nowadays.

mtv is filled with songs from t-pain, chris brown, lil wayne, william, flo-rida, timbaland. there is much more stuff in this genre.

its changed for the worse and theres nothing anyone can do about it. its a trend that every one follows - and not one person can change the rap game.

im really waiting on eminems album, and also those that i mentioned in the thread i created entitled "the albums you're waiting on" thread.

I understand your point of view. I used to have some love for Ludacris, but I don't feel it anymore. T.I.'s album was good, I am having high expectations for the new Eminem whenever that comes out. I've been feeling a majority of the leaks of Kanye's new album. I can't say I've been listening to rap as much as before, I like less and less. Is it me or is it rap itself that is deteriorating? I don't know. I noticed The Streets has been less active too recently. I can't wait to hear Dr Dre's next album but at the same I waited too long and will be disappointed very easily. I can't say I liked The Game's album, it was very average. Lil Wayne's album was alright, at first I thought it was fire, but now I feel it doesn't have as much replay value as I once thought it did. If not what else is out? I've doing an overdose of T-Pain which I never particularly liked. Chris Brown is okay but dude please take a break, come back in a few months, let me breathe.

I think the issue is that all the new tracks sound the same, it's like rap which once has so many different styles all sounds the same now, and obviously if that one style doesn't fit you, well rap has nothing to offer. Obviously I'm not talking about underground rap but mainstream as this thread is about mainstream rap.

Exactly that's the point.

Also if it comes to underground and less known rappers - the problem is that there are less interesting ones with every year. Except that new cats these days want to be like lil wayne or 50, many rappers change their style to fit the modern standard. It hurts me a lot.

To be honest, I think you have yourselves to blame.

When I say you, I mean the public, for ease of writing, Im not addressing anyone specifically in this thread.

The reason MTV or even record labels dont push the artists you like is because they dont sell. Because when your favorite underground rapper dropped you downloaded his shit, so the budget got cut on the next release, which you downloaded anyway. Where as Lil Wayne, has enough 15 year old fans that iTunes his shit or buy the CD in stores and money makes media take notice.

Wayne wasnt shit in MTVs eyes until he started making maaajor money, the same goes for any rapper.

And it is no coincidence that the rappers you think are nice do not make money, and so they dont get the shine on TV and in media.

As for Nov 24, only album I will pick up is Luda. Ludacris's flow is fucking amazing sometimes and his lyrics is tight, go listen.

Here is one of his latest, dumbed the flow down a little but dont have time to find proper examples and this should showcase what his next album is about coz it's off of it.

^^i can only speak for myself here obviously but if an album i like comes out, i will go out to the record store to buy it. I wont download it.I like to support artists i like. On the other if i dont like a particular artist or an album, then i might download the album.

I usually download or listen online then buy if I like it. Definately there is a lot of truth about kids buying Lil Wayne or 50. Usually more mature people dig the underground (lol). They are not that die hard fans. They listen to a lot of music and wouldn't bother to buy a particular disk. I guess that mostly deep hip-hop heads buy originals and are proud of their collection.

I know, but I think the majority of fans fall into the category I explained about and that is who I meant when I used the collective "you."

i have a few questions for you;

when were O.C, Killah Priest etc actually part of the mainstream (minus early 90s for the WU)

why do you care what people label hip hop?

also another point;

for each "shit" album in the mainstream, there is one "good" album to make up for it; common, nas, jay-z are just examples.

i dont know what youre looking for

hip hop has skyrocketed in the past 2 decades - it's blown up and is embraced more. it's grown exponentially. as it reaches mass appeal there are those who capitalise on it, but then there are also others who make some real gritty hip hop music. just expand your horizons and dont expect to hear the hip hop equivalent of mozart on the radio, but also appreciate that there is a form of hip hop out there for anybody to embrace
