Homeopathy

Great post Jokerman, and just wondering if you had any alternative suggestions for diabetes other than traditional medicine. I was interested to see you mention that as my sister is a diabetic.

I'm not saying that traditional medicine is flawless, but if the alternative is snake oil sold on the basis of pseudoscience that has no demonstrable effect then we don't have much of a choice.

Which is why I would rather see people's experiences with Homeopathy than completely rule it out just because I (and science) don't understand it.
Like I said before, it's not an issue of understanding homeopathy. There's nothing to understand, it is not effective and it's not effective because it has no reason to be. Nobody is scratching their head and wondering why homeopathy works, because it doesn't work. Again, you might as well try crystals or magnets or prayer.

Yes. Take some homeopathic magnetic crystals and start praying to the god Horus.

No, I have many suggestion but it will take more than a few minutes to write them, so check back in a little while. But tell me, is she overweight and not a vegetarian like you?

She's not a vegetarian, but she eats animals who are.

Diabetes is often reversible with the aid of a healthy lifestyle, diet, supplements, and exercise. When making these types of changes, it’s important not to immediately stop taking any medication. With a doctor’s guidance, an insulin dependency may be reduced or completely eliminated.

What we eat provides the basic building blocks for the whole body. The key to recovering from diabetes is replacing healthy foods for unhealthy ones. High-quality protein and fiber is central to reducing blood-sugar and insulin levels.

Always eat breakfast. To improve blood-sugar levels, curb the appetite, and lose weight, it’s essential to eat a protein-rich breakfast every day. My first-choice is eggs. If she’s a veggie or doesn’t like eggs, then blend up a protein shake with berries.

Eat some protein at every meal. It’s good for the blood sugar.

Eat plenty of vegetables.

Avoid all forms of potatoes. Limit consumption of corn and peas.

Eat high-fiber, nonstarchy fruits. All berries, kiwis, apples, melons, and grapefruit. She should not eat bananas, dates, figs, grapes, nectarines, oranges, peaches, pears, and plums, at least until her weight and blood sugar normalize. Even then, she should limit the quantities of these fruits.

Don’t skip meals, and eat slowly.

Eat healthy oils and fats. She should take a tablespoon of cod-liver oil a day. Not fish-oil capsules, the actual oil. It usually comes flavored with lemon or cherry, so it’s really not bad.

For cooking, use coconut oil, olive oil, or macademia nut oil. Eat salmon, tuna, and other coldwater fish. Eat walnuts, almonds, pistachios for snacks every day.

Avoid corn oil, safflower, soybean and peanut oils.

Use a lot of herbs for seasoning. Garlic, basil, oregano, rosemary, parsley, dill, saffron, and others. Fresh is better, of course. They have been shown to reduce blood sugar. Use cinnamon and ginger too.

Drink plenty of water and herb teas. Avoid sodas and fruit juices. Avoid coffee.

Don’t eat foods made with refined sugars and added sugars. No honey or maple syrup. No corn syrup. No artificial sweeteners. I know, this will be a challenge, but if she needs to have sweets, get them from fruit, or she can use Stevia, Xylitol, or Therasweet powders that she can get in health food stores. Stevia is three hundred times sweeter than the same amount of sugar. More expensive, but a little goes a long way.

Don’t eat foods made from refined carbs, like wheat or corn. So stay away from breads, bagels, muffins, pastas, tortillas, pizza dough. As a general rule, white flour, white bread, white pasta, and white rice are among the most sugarlike carbs. To the surprise of many people, however, whole grains, particularly wheat and corn, are almost as bad in terms of raising blood sugar! So limit whole grains and even multi-grain breads. Vegetarians generally don’t like to hear this advice, in part because they are often addicted to grain products, as are most nonvegetarians. But when vegetarians are overweight or diabetic, they must consider the possibility that their eating habits may be making them sicker, not healthier. Spelt bread is good alternative bread.

Supplements:

Take a multivitamin to begin with. It should contain 20 to 50 mg each of vitamins B1, B2, B3, and B6. I like Carlson’s Nutra-Support Diabetes, formulated specifically for people with diabetes. I don’t know if you can get it in England, but you can online. However, there are other good multis out there. I can tell you the exact ranges for each vitamin and mineral to look for, if you want.

Other supplements:

Take any or all of these in addition to the multi.

Alpha-lipoic acid and R-lipoic acid- improves insulin function. Try 100 mg of each before each meal. They’re often combined in a single supplement, so look for that.

Chromium- improves insulin function. 500 mcg twice daily.

Vitamin C- she should take at least 500 mg every 2 hours, as should everyone. That’s about 3,000 a day. Calcium ascorbate is the best form of Vit C. It’s less acidic on the stomach than ascorbic acid.

Pycnogenol- a powerful natural antioxidant that can lower blood sugar and improve many complications of diabetes. 100 mg daily.

Silymarin- extract of the herb milk thistle. In a year-long study, it reduced blood-sugar levels in seriously ill diabetic patients by 9.5 to 15 percent. Take 100 mg with meals two times a day.

Vitamin D- in addition to what she’s getting in her multi, I recommend extra supplementation or at least 15 minutes of sun on the face and arms every day. Take 1,000 IU more.

Glycine- an amino acid shown to be helpful. It works by accelerating the burning of blood sugar. Try 2 grams (2,000 mg) of glycine with meals.

American ginseng- lowers blood sugar. Try 3 grams daily.

N-acetylcysteine (NAC)- potent antioxidant shown to reduce insulin levels by one-third. Take 1,000 to 2,000 IU daily. It smells like rotten eggs but that’s normal.

If she has complications due to diabetes, there’s other supplements that can help. Does she have kidney disease, eye disease, neuropathy, hypertension? Let me know and I can recommend further.

She needs to increase physical activity if she’s not already exercising. Physical activity reduces blood sugar and insulin levels. It shrinks the size of fat cells. I recommend walking. Walk for about 30 minutes a day. Later in the day is better than the morning. Muscles are more flexible.

If she’s really going to do all this, she should track her progress to get a reference point. She should ask her physician to conduct several blood tests if she hasn’t had these done recently. Fasting glucose, fasting insulin, triglycerides, high-sensitivity C-reactive protein, HbA1c. Get a copy of these tests and keep them. Get these tests again after 2 months and see if they changed. You can find the normal values for these on the Web or her doctor can provide it.

Any of this advice that she can adopt will be helpful. Some of it will be hard because of habits and because people usually take the path of least resistance, which is often the path of greatest convenience. We stay in our comfort zones. But I think the changes she feels as she makes these changes will motivate her to continue.
