What always pisses me off is when people say the south all sounds the same. That is such a broad brush stroke. I mean, Outkast sounds like Rick Ross who sounds like TI? Come on now.
As for the slang, sure, yeah, they all have the same slang, same drawl, and the production has the same style and vibe, thats what makes the south the south.
Uneducated ears used to say that rap all sounded the same. "Its just dudes talking over simple 4 by 4 beats that sample old records." That wasnt true back then, and it certainly isnt true now.
All West coast music sounds similar, thats why it's west coast hip-hop, its similar sub cultures. All New York rappers rhyme similar, the production is similar, thats their sub culture but thats what makes it New York hip-hop and the same can be said for the South.
There's dope music coming out of all regions you just need to educate yourself and open your ears.
In Sarr's defense, he is somewhat disadvantaged as he belongs to the "Oz Hip Hop" sub culture in Australia which prides itself on remaining true to the origins of Hip-Hop, and thus riding the '88 to '98 New York sound and artists HARD. Unfortunately, while they refuse to sell out which is a good thing, that particular sub culture has a hard time evolving and developing new trends of its own but thats a totally different discussion.
Self proclaimed Hip-Hop purists think Hip-Hop stars and ends with a New York way of doing things, and that is their prerogative. It's just sad when they ignore whole other styles of music or culture because of their views.
Oh well, their loss.
