Discuss Nas' Hip Hop Is Dead LP 6 months later! Was it ever a classic?

That's a load of bullshit, if I've ever heard any. Especially considering that the BluePrint is among one of Jay-Z's official classic albums. And it's funny that you say the Black Album is a classic. If it wasn't for Jay-Z announcing that album as his last album, it wouldn't be rated above average. Black Album is overrated! If you were to put the Dynasty album in place of the Black Album, people would rate that as classic.

As for "Hip Hop Is Dead", the only thing that makes it noteworthy is the album title and the controversy surrounding the album at the time of it's release. It's no classic lp.

Doctor's Advocate on the other hand has more potential of being looked back years later as a classic more than any other lp from 06. And I think that's mainly due to the great production. Almost all the beats sound like they were made by Dr.Dre. And you can't tell me production doesn't play a main part in determining classics, especially Dre-sounding beats.

I don't see how any self-respecting fan of music could put DA over HHID. HHID is the best rap album of 06, but will never be as popular as it should be. Ask 20 rap fans to name the best 2 Jay-Z albums. 19 will put RD and TBA over TB, even though (imo) that TB is better than both.

I don't consider many albums to be classic in 6 months.

I still listen to it a lot, I like a lot of the beats and samples used and Nas' lyrics are to the standard we expect.

I'm a Nas fan but the danger with every Nas album is the clowns and dickriders who will say it's a classic before they have listened to it throughly. I'd hazard a guess that this is why a lot of folks are put off Nas.

If I was to rate it, it'd definately be beneath Illmatic and Lost Tapes that goes without saying, I'd probably put it somewhere with Stillmatic and IWW, not really sure at this moment in time.

The Chronic isn't classic because of the lyrics, its classic because of the beats, Dre brought a new sound to hip hop that was dope as fuck, people couldn't get enough of it. The Chronic is full of sick songs and beats. DA will never be classic becuase like you said Dre and snoop were rapping aobut the same thing like 12 or 13 years ago so he didn't bring anything new content wise, there aren't any great conceptual tracks on the album, and there are like 4 or 5 good songs, the rest is garbage.

Anyways enough arguing. No way HHID is a classic, wasn't when it dropped and isn't now. Was it good? yeah, it was. Just because it was a good album people were calling it classic, in fact I find that alot of people are doing that these days, they hear something good and instantly scream classic. I mean to be classic you gotta bring something new to the game, create something that didn't exist and most importantly you need to test the stand of time, imo HHID hasn't done the first two and I doubt it'll do the third which is why I'll never call it classic.

Man stop making excuses. Fuck the content and conceptual shit you talking about. Good music is good music. Just cause someone is to make an album today like MATW, with the same type of concept songs including their own version of a Dear Mama concept, will it make the lp any less if the songs are good or not? If someone made another Illmatic , will it make it any less since the concepts have been done before. That is that streethop smart hip hop fan shit I be talking about. Cats want to sound smart and not give dope music it's credit.

Let me tell you and this forum that the Doctor's Advocate lp will stand out years from now because that album has brought back that classic westcoast sound that had been missing for 10 years. You listen to a track like the "Remedy" from "Doctor's Advocate" produced by Just Blaze and it sounds like it could've been on an NWA album. The production alone will make DA standout in a few years despite the repetition. It's a very great album from front to back. Game got deep on that album and shared some his life, his state of mind, his admiration for Dre, and just the westcoasts lifestyle and hip hop in general.

I attempted to give Hip Hop Is Dead a good start to finish listen today and i couldnt.I ended up skipping a few songs.Its a decent album and nothing more in my view.

I love a good majority of the songs, its got skipability but the bright spots of that album are Hip Hop is Dead, Black Republican, Let There Be Light (love that), Hope, Still Dreaming and Carry On Tradition. I still love the album, its not on constant rotation but its still a good album to listen to. I think some people rode the bandwagon of the albums release and now are realising its not their cup of tea, that doesnt bring down the value of the album in any way.
