Discuss Nas' Hip Hop Is Dead LP 6 months later! Was it ever a classic?

#1
When Nas first dropped Hip Hop Is Dead last December, so many people were running around, especially in this forum with the "hip hop heads" in particular were saying that it was a classic album and the album of 2006.

Back when it came out, I was the first to say that the LP was another Nas lp and was only decent for the time, but for some reason alotta people were rating it above average.

So the question is, what do you think now? Is it still a classic? Was it ever a classic? Do you still listen to it? Where do you rate this among other Nas lps? I for one don't think "Hip Hop Is Dead" was 2006's album of the year. I'll leave my opinion for later on in the thread so it won't be a distraction to the thread.

No.When i first heard this album i just said that it was automatically a great album without listening to it properly.

It isn't a classic. Its a decent album, nothing more and to be honest i rarely listen to it anymore. Its pretty boring and has no replay value imo.And i am a big fan of Nas's music.

I don't personally think it is, like B Sands said it has no replay value for me. But saying that Nas has bored me for quite some time.

i think it is a great album. i am biased since nas is my favorite rapper. i found the beats and overall production to be very great. i didnt find anything that boring about the album. there are some very creative and original songs on that album. i mean "who killed it" is dope as fuck.

Keep it real. HHID was overrated when it first came out. And now, barely anyone listens to it. 2006's classic album of the year and album of the year period goes to "Doctor's Advocate". The replay value on that album is amazing. The beats are on par and overall Game brought his A+ game. I think it's ashame that people don't want to give The Game his props and his credit. And people aren't giving him his due because of side issues such just his mouth, constant beefs, character, and overall personality.

You've got to admit, Doctor's Advocate was mainstream hip hop album of 2006.

HHID murders Doctor's Advocate. I don't think DA has ANY replay value at all. As for HHID, I think it's a classic, but will never be recognized as one, because of the overshadowing of his other albums. Kind of like how The Blueprint by Jay-Z will never be looked at as a classic because of Reasonable Doubt and The Black Album.

No, Doctor's advocate sucked. Empty hollow rhymes 95% of the time, some ok beats that mostly get ruined by the shitty lyrics and zero replay value. That album sucked balls and I like game.

Lol. You don't like Game just like most of this forum. And I'm not surprised at such a reply on here. I'm sure I'll get many like that on here after my rebuttle. Because this forum seems to be pro-underground, sides with low-profile artists, and anti mainstream. Doctor's Advocate having no replay value=one of the most shittiest opinions I ever heard. And lol at picking on his lyrics. As if Dre wasn't talking about the same type of things over and over on Chronic but yet that is still a classic. Another form of hypocrisy.

^^Well Nas is hardly no profile or underground

Doctor's Advocate was a good album but i don't listen to it much anymore either.

A classic album is one that you will still listen to and like in ten years time. This isn't true in the case of Hip Hop Is Dead or Doctor's Advocate imo.

That's a load of bullshit, if I've ever heard any. Especially considering that the BluePrint is among one of Jay-Z's official classic albums. And it's funny that you say the Black Album is a classic. If it wasn't for Jay-Z announcing that album as his last album, it wouldn't be rated above average. Black Album is overrated! If you were to put the Dynasty album in place of the Black Album, people would rate that as classic.

As for "Hip Hop Is Dead", the only thing that makes it noteworthy is the album title and the controversy surrounding the album at the time of it's release. It's no classic lp.

Doctor's Advocate on the other hand has more potential of being looked back years later as a classic more than any other lp from 06. And I think that's mainly due to the great production. Almost all the beats sound like they were made by Dr.Dre. And you can't tell me production doesn't play a main part in determining classics, especially Dre-sounding beats.
