Is there a way to deny certain permissions of an app, like "reading SMS" or something like that?

Just read something that mentioned the Facebook app's new permissions that are a bit puzzling and might have something to do with Whatsapp. Like changing you wallpaper for ads or adding FB events to your calendar.

I don't want that shit...

Google were going to introduce that, I thought. It would be good. The apps have far more permissions than I'd like. I don't have FB on my phone.

The apps usually just use java functions from packages that belong to certain functionality without taking advantage of such permissions - that's how Google Play specifies permissions - it knows whether an app calls for a function from usage of a function belonging to a package related for example to contacts or texts.

For instance, if you want to make a flashlight app the easiest way to do so is using a function coming from camera packages, so for such app Google Play would usually state that an app requires access to your camera, even though it doesn't. There's no "camera flash" package and functions for enabling flash are in the camera packages.
You'll often see that an app requires to read texts even though it doesn't do it at all - it might just want predictive text input. Some apps might request for contacts even though all they do is save something TO contact list without reading anything at all. Etc. Etc.

From realistic point of view, it is not possible at this point to deny permissions without making the app crash or not work at all as it'd essentially block functions from related packages that are referenced all over its code and run when the app is being loaded (or when entering corresponding menu/launching such function due to JiT).
It would require most apps to be rewritten and even at that point it'd be troublesome.
I say it's not likely we're going to receive permission denial anytime soon.

Well, I deactivated Facebook a few weeks back but I still kept the app despite taking it off my home screen. I was in the Facebook app beta, I'm not sure if uninstalling it will ruin that...but... I might as well just uninstall the app. I get an update for it every other day. It's been a feature for a few months now, and I may have mentioned it before, but has anyone used Google Now's location based reminders? You can set a reminder so that the next time you are out at a specific store you can have an alert for picking up something. It can be an item from WalMart or something like that.

I wish there was a simple app that performed tasks based on location. Like sending a text when on a certain corner of the street to a friend to let them know you're there. Or to shut off data when you're at your house or to load up a rewards card when you're at the gas station.

I was mentioning this a week or two ago. Masta might have been the one saying the N7 2013 didn't have as good sales as the 2012, and maybe this is why http://www.wired.com/business/2014/03/people-love-ipads-bad-news-apple/

Is there any word on an N7 this year? I heard they'll skip a year so that the N8 can have its time in the limelight in April, or so. That's next month, and we haven't seen leaked-anythings of it yet.

It was supposed to be around Google I/O, maybe? And that's in...June?

That was me, but I've not seen any hard sales figures, just a few articles suggesting that's the case, and my own observations of not seeing many out and about. Android tablet sales have rocketed though, which I suspect is mostly due to Samsung, I've seen many Galaxy Tab 3 7" models out and about. Even my sister has a Tab 10.1 and an S4 phone, and she's not really into tech. It's difficult for companies to compete with Samsung's marketing budgets. They aren't making the best products.

I don't see a new N7 this year. I suspect an N8 in June and a price drop on the 2013 N7. If they dropped it to £149 (currently £199) then it would sell a lot more, as that's incredible value-to-spec ratio.

And I ended up going through Privacy Guard and looking at the permissions. Not sure what to disable and enable, kind of like cutting the wire to defuse a bomb. Not sure which one will fuck it up.

Deleted Facebook, so I should be alright.

I downloaded Tasker again. Going to see if I can learn this thing properly. Already tried doing location-based tasks and I wanted to throw my phone at the wall. Then I remember I pirated, not bought, the app so it's whatever.

I don't know what it is, but it has been getting a lot of buzz on Twitter and Reddit.

Casey, thanks again for the tutorial on getting Falcon Pro. I seriously don't think I'll switch to anything else, unless it can open links within the actual app.

I'm surprised no one mentioned Milk, the music app from Samsung. Seems like another Pandora thingy, but because it's only for Samsung users, I downloaded it to feel exclusive and smug. http://www.samsung.com/us/showcase/milk/

so, there's a bug on the HTC One where when you get a call, it goes straight to speaker phone. apparently it's due to a recent update and the phone companies in the UK rolled it back but not in the US. it's kind of annoying but everything else works well.

I haven't been able to get to grips with Tasker either. No worries on Falcon Pro - I used to switch Twitter clients all the time but I've been using this one solidly for a while now.

Is Milk any good? I could easily make a few mods to make my phone think it's a Samsung device and it should work, but not sure if it's worth using. I pay for Google Play All Access, which suits all my needs.

I used Milk a few times and, like I said, it's like a Pandora rip off. Just streams a radio of songs based on genre. Hip Hop is like "Underground" "Ladies of hip hop" etc. So there are smaller divisions of a genre within it, too.

I have never been one to listen to music on my phone. I just downloaded the app because it was for Samsung phones.

What is the mod for scrambling your phone model? Is it something I could do to get the proprietary Samsung Apps on my CM11 S3?
