Technology Android

That still doesn't explain why Google chose to do this now and not before. I feel like precedents are being set here, and they're not very good ones.

While it's hard to argue with the prizes, I didn't think Google would resort to partnering up with another company, a candy company at that, and use that as a means of spreading.

This is some "Android 5.0 is brought to you by Nestle's Kit Kat" kinda shit.

What will come of the "L" iteration of Android?

I see your point. If Google did start sponsoring every iteration of Android, I would be somewhat upset. But... For now... I am taking this as a bit of fun.

Also... I don't want to buy the new Nexus phone. I really don't. My 4 is still brilliant and I still love it. But... When I watched the video that Google posted of the Kit Kat Droid, I was brainwashed and fiending for the new phone...!

And.... I know it's weird. But I don't actually like chocolate. Especially that shit you eat in the the US.

I'm surprised Casey isn't boycotting Android for bringing in non-vegan chocolate to his favorite mobile OS.

Even if Google didn't do this ever again, what was the point of this specific OS update being named after another company's product? Even if it doesn't mean anything, why the fuck even do it, then? What made Google think this was a good idea?

It's just so weird they would do this.

I will admit, I will go buy a Kit Kat because of this, but this is benefitting Nestle right now. I'm not going to use my phone more now, as a result of it being associated with fucking Kit Kats now.

I hope I win that Nexus 7. Or else I will have to buy it myself.

It could be working because people are talking about it, it creates a buzz and starts trending online.

For those who buy Kit Kats because of this promotion - Nestle wins
For those who win Google Play credit - Nesle, Google and the consumer all win
For those who win Nexus devices - Nestle, Google and the consumer all win

I mean, I will be more inclined to buy some Kit Kats now - because I want to buy a few albums on Google Play so if I win the credit, it'll save me money. But either way I'm going to buy it. Also, if I happen to win a Nexus device then that's even better. If I don't win anything then fair enough - that's how these things work but I wouldn't go out of my way to buy a Kit Kat.

Edit: a couple of Kit Kats - and if I don't win then I can still eat it or just give them to my brother or someone.

Like I said, I'd do it for the potential to win an N7 before I actually went and bought one.

Kit Kats were drunk food for me in college. Sort of.

Every time we drank, a few friends and I would go to the gas station and buy some Kit Kats and stick them in the freezer. When we were drunk, we'd remember our Kit Kats and eat them at odd hours. It was more of a tradition, than anything. So I have nothing against the candy itself. Just associating it with Android. I'm sure I'll get over it soon, but this is such a shockingly uncharacteristic thing for Android, I can't help but be skeptical and suspicious about it all. Like my signal meter or some shit is going to be all Nestle or Kit Kat themed.

What's the difference between this and getting a free iTunes download when you go to Starbucks?

It's brand visibility. Brand visibility for Android and the Nexus line of devices, as opposed to brand visibility for a partner company like Samsung.

The Nexus 4 and 7 have been hits, but Nexus still doesn't have the consumer brand awareness of other products like the Galaxy line or any Apple products.

This goes a LONG way to furthering that cause. I mean shit, you have the word NEXUS and the Android logo PROMINENTLY displayed on 50 million fucking candy bars.

That's all good in my book.

I don't give a fuck about Nestle. You do what you gotta do to get ahead.

And hey, I may not eat them but KitKat isn't so bad a brand. Could have been a lot worse, they could have partnered with KFC..... lol. Then I would have to consider a boycott ;)

Well, the issue I have is not with the fact that Google is offering its products through giveaways using Nestle. You're right; Apple has offered free iTunes codes and songs through Starbucks before. The difference is Apple did not name hardware or software after anything Starbucks related. Nor did Starbucks make an "iCoffee" or something like that. What I fear will happen by going beyond the Kit Kat sweepstakes is that Nestle will, for some retarded reason, have a say in what Google puts into 4.4 or 5.0, whatever this iteration of Android will be called.

I Google is not dumb enough to have Nestle design it themselves like some sort of Candyland shit, but I have a feeling that Nestle will design the theme for stock Android 5.0 and that would be the norm, stock, vanilla, AOSP thing we all get. Otherwise it seems stupid to name it Kit Kat then. I have a feeling it will be a Kit Kat theme, which might be a neat novelty for a week or two, but then it will just go full on retard.

Again, I understand I'm speculating here and "Kit Kat" could just be the name, and that's it. No UI influence from Nestle or bloatware Nestle apps that tell you where the nearest gas station that has Kit Kats is. But if that is the case, it still seems so odd that that would be it. It's like your parent quietly opening your room door, poking their head in, and quietly closing the door again without saying a word. Nothing happened, but it makes you wonder what the intentions are.

Turns out it was because Google engineers are given Kit Kats as free snacks at Google HQ and some genius said "let's name it 'Kit Kat.'"

Ghey.

Any one scoop up a specially marked Kit Kat with a code in it?

Still haven't found any near me.

I dont dig the design of the N5 but as long as its based on the new Optimus G2 that's all good. It's a very good phone.

Brand new iPhone 5C looks like a joke next to my year-old Nexus 4.
