Whitney Houston died.

It makes me sick watching the media balance the line between paying respect to her accomplishments while highlighting all her failures and pitfalls. Only a year or so ago the media were ripping into her about the failed Tour she did here and nasty little headlines about it. Now the headline reads: "We Will Always Love You" and it just disgusts me that we (they) can't pay the same respect to her when she's living, and take the opportunity to kick someone when they're down. Just sad.

Journalism is dead.

That's an interesting perspective with plenty of truth in it.

It's not that journalism is dead, it's that this subject is insignificant.

To you it may be, to others not so.

I hate when people die anymore. Race to report it first. Then the obnoxious ppl "I don't have any sympathy." and "I was never a fan."
I hope someone shows up at your Mom's funeral and says "I never really liked her. I don't get the hype."

It's sad, I feel for her family.

well, that's why they call it balanced news reporting. drugs were a huge deal in her life. you can't report on her death or life without mentioning that. it's not kicking somebody down. it's doing fucking journalistic work.

anyway, reporting on dead people is always tricky. not just reporting, but bearing witness to dead people. whenever a celeb dies, we're inclined to say something because everyone talks about it. that's when the people that keco described come out. when three million people post a song about whitney houston on facebook and say how much they loved her, it turns you into a rebellious, angry, cynical fuck. there's just no way around that because secretly, those people who posted that shit piss us off. not that we have anything really against her. hell i don't know one whitney houston song.

Reporting on celebrities... IS NOT JOURNALISM...!

That is all.

No one ever provided receipts for her alleged crack use. I think that's a sound defense.

I'm not just talking about Whitney Houston dying though, not even just celebs, anyone.. I caught a 5 minute grab of the news this morning and they were "reporting" how a child who was missing for 15 minutes was found dead in the family swimming pool. Now I see the value in reporting this because it gets the message out to have the proper security around your pool to prevent unsupervised children being around the pool. Ok so my problem began when they were showing footage of the families back yard that seriously looked like they were hanging over the fence with their camera. For fuck sake we don't need to see that! Leave the family alone. Happens all the time if there is a murder they harass the family hoping for a comment. It just pisses me off, and I can't watch the news without feeling true journalism is dead, or atleast it is well hidden.

I understand that it will get mentioned, it's far from a balanced view of her life though, but anyway. My point really is that when she was alive they hound her and invade her privacy to "report" in trashy magazines how fucked her life is and make fun of her attempting a World Tour. Then she dies and its a mixture of cashing in on being sentimental about her and at the same time "balancing" that with still talking about her drug addictions etc. I'm going off track now but this is an example of how I hate the media's contradicting nature.. I was at the shops and saw the cover of a trash mag talking about how anorexic these 5 celebs are and how horrible it is and why won't they just eat something.. The next issue I saw of the same magazine was a cover featuring *bigger* "over-weight" celebs and saying how fat fat FAT they were. Now that wasn't a genuine newspaper but those aren't that much better.

I think if you read a newspaper from 15 years ago and a newspaper from today it would be unrecognisable.

Anway..... Rant over.

you're not making a distinction between real journalism, ie. The New York Times, Mother Jones, ProPublica and trashy magazines (I can't make one off the top of my head) that you see in the shopping aisle at your local grocery conglomerate. Your rant's misguided.

Is that not the definition of a rant. (Don't bother answering that).. I live in a city that only has 1 Newspaper and it is horrible, and biased. Just let me rant dammit!!

you think your paper is horrible. down here in geelong any thing to do with the AFL team the geelong cats make front page, and like a murder or some actual news worthy report is on page 5 or so

You name it we got. How about... "It's in there."

The cause of singer Whitney Houston's death was drowning and the "effects of atherosclerotic heart disease and cocaine use," the Los Angeles County coroner's office said Thursday.

Other drugs identified in Houston's body were marijuana, alprazolam (Xanax), cyclobenzaprine (Flexeril) and diphenhydramine (Benadryl), but they "did not contribute to the death," the report said. Flexeril is a muscle relaxant, and Benadryl is an allergy medicine.

Eh. Sucks. If you're depressed, go get help.
