I am so surprised Kanye wasn't nominated for Album of the Year, for either one. I know some people don't think Watch the Throne was all that, and I can understand that (although I loved it), but My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy is an AMAZING album. I don't want to take away from the other albums--I haven't heard them all (only 21, which I think is a really good album), and I'm sure they're worthy--but, in my opinion, they all have to be really really great to justify MBDTF being excluded. I read that he even--instead of throwing his usual fit--blamed himself, for not "spacing them out" enough.

I do think it's funny that he's up against himself in like 3 categories, though.

You mean, as in dates released? No, because they're both up for rap album. I don't think he would've won, anyway, but it would've been nice to see him in there AGAIN. His other three rap albums (not 808s) were ALL nominated for Album of the Year and all of them WON Rap Album of the Year. I just don't get it this year. Did Rihanna really put out a better album than he? Lady Gaga? Really?

Marsha Ambrosius to win best R&B Performance and Best R&B Song.
I Need A Doctor to win best Rap Collaboration and Best Rap Song.

One I'm surprised to see missing from the list is Aloe Blacc's "I Need A Dollar".

And isn't Chris Brown's Look At Me Now with busta and wayne like over a year old now?

I think he's trying to say that Kanye didn't release a rap album, that Kanye is POP like Michael Jackson. If so, I will fuck an Englishman up. :)

No. It was a rap album, but also a pop album. Name me an album in the popular music genre that was better. MBDTF was my favourite album of the year in both categories.

That's better.

I wasn't even aware the popular music genre existed anymore, to be honest. Is that a genre of music or just a category after you sell a certain amount of records?

that song's been out since early 2010.

i don't give a damn about a... (c) mmlp but yeah, it's weird that MBTDF didn't get an AOTY nod. i remember it being on top of all the critics' lists at the end of the year.

To me, pop music is stuff like Brittney Spears, Christina Agulera, the one hit wonders on top 40 radio. Stuff like Kanye's is just popular music.

For me, pop as a distinct genre happens when all the elements of a kind of music are manufactured outside of their natural habitat.

Lupe Fiasco and B.O.B.'s early stuff is unquestionably hip-hop. "The Show Goes On" and "Airplanes," songs whose existence was clearly ordered from on high, are pop. Are they hip-hop? The same way that a Cadillac EXT is a truck, I guess.

But then, how do we treat something like Lil Wayne's "Lollipop" or Outkast's "Ms. Jackson"? They're major parts of the pop landscape, but no A&R or major label exec could have invented them. What about the entire existence of Drake?

And that's why clique discussions are stupid.
