Kanye West - My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy

#22
It doesn't sound like a rap album, which could be a good or bad thing depending on how you look at it. It could be benre-expanding, or it could be a poor take on hip-hop. It is very beat orientated and seemingly less lyrical, which could very well be the way hip-hop is moving/about to move. It could be the "new thing" in hip-hop (i.e. gangsta rap/backpack rap/bling bling rap), or a flash in the pan. My instincts tell me this album will start the "new thing" and will not quickly be forgotten. It doesn't feel like a rap album very much to me, in the same way Sargeant Peppers didn't feel like a rock album to listeners at the time. It's hard to say exactly where this album will be placed in history, but my guess is "Milestone" status.

It's not lyrical? I could write an essay on that masterpiece line alone. This is Kanye's most lyrical shit since his debut album. This album is a straight up rap album. It's no less a rap album than his debut. Dark Fantasy, Power, Monster, So Appalled, My Chain Heavy are all straight up lyrical rap tracks. It's like you're basing your opinion based off of Blame Game only. Just because Kanye does some singing on Runaway and Hell of a Life doesn't make this some genre-bending shit.

And the thing is, Kanye probably doesn't see this album as just a rap album. He doesn't see himself as just a rapper but a musician. You can sense that in his song-crafting ability. But make no mistake, he has rapped his ass off on his album.

This sounds like a rap album. If you think a rap album should sound like Celph Titled on 90s Buckwild beats then go listen to that sleep-inducing Nineteen Ninety Now album.

I didn't say not lyrical, I said "seemingly less lyrical," meaning the album is beat and melody focused, which it is. I don't take lyrics too lightly, which is probably why I'm not as wooed by a slightly above average punch line as you are. This album, lyrically, is pretty comparable to if Lil Wayne and a lesser-talented Talib Kweli had a bastard love child. In other words, it's not bad, but far from great. Lyrically this album is somewhere around a 6-7 and musically a 10, good for an 8.5 overall.

I get what you're saying. I don't mean to disagree with everything you say in this forum so don't take it personally. But an album that's very sonically-oriented isn't less of a rap album. I never saw rap without beats. If you don't have a beat, you don't have a rap song. You have some spoken word concoction. If you have a melodic beat and rap, what you have is a better rap song. Plain and simple.

Also, I would not call the line I quoted a punch line. A punch line is something like, since I mentioned Celph Titled already, "My click is raw, be prepared when you meet us / Kill an unborn baby and you still couldn't de-fetus (defeat us)". What Kanye said was metaphorical with every phrase having a double meaning and with the whole line having a big socio-political and socio-economic implication. It's not just that the line was witty based on the double meaning, but what it represented overall. The line has like 200 years of history in it. Don't get me wrong, I'm not making this line out to be something out of this world, but for Kanye, a producer focused on all aspects of making a song, this line is pretty damn lyrical.

Now, quote me a line from 2010 that's better than the Kanye line I quoted.

This I am in agreement with.

Jsut listened to the album. We've heard 90% of it months ago. But I still love it. This is hip-hop, there is no other description for it. It's just a highly polished. high quality musical masterpiece. Kanye still has the swagger.... This album actually makes me feel better after I listen to it. It's uplifting, melodically.

Wow cant believe you called Nineteen Ninety Now "sleep inducing". Nineteen Ninety Now is more of a rap album to me than Kanyes. Though obviously rap albums can have more than one sound and be aimed at different sorts of fans. Kanyes is obviously geared more towards a pop audience where as Celph titled is geared towards fans of 90s boom bap. Not sure if your familliar with Pigeon Johns album he dropped this year, Its got many influences from many different genres, but to me its still a rap album. Maybe we're just different types of fans.

I listened to Kanyes CD earlier (weird ass artwork btw). Its not as bad as I thought it would be. The first track is awesome. I didnt get to pay a great amount of attention to the lyrics cos I was in work. But I did find myself cringing a few times, especially at that track with the Iron Man hook, thought that was horrible and a few times had to ask myself did he really say that about some of his and guest rappers lyrics. Plus I was really enjoying Devil In A New Dress until Rick Ross completely ruined it.

Overall I was pleasently surprised but its not something I would really go back to. That Masterpiece line you quoted was nice.

Esoteric is still holding on to the album of the year crown for me!

What don't you like about Kanye's raps?
Just not feeling it, I used to like them before but I just can't get into the way he raps any more. The album musically is great, but nearly all the raps even the guests I just can't get into on this album. So for me this is an average album that I won't really listen to. Surprisingly I listened to 808 album a whole lot more.

I thought Kanye brought his A-Game. I love his bravado.

You need to be more specific or something. I feel like you didn't listen well enough, or are still attracted to how words sound and now what they mean. Kanye was very solid throughout the whole album
