This is my thread

Squid Game became the biggest series in Netflix history for several reasons. Beyond its shocking violence and gripping story, the series explores several themes such as religion, human nature, and the pitfalls of economic inequalities. While several news sources interpreted Squid Game as a “critique of capitalism”, they seem to overlook the most obvious and glaring theme: Society being ruled by a sick occult elite that takes pleasure in dividing, controlling, dehumanizing, infantilizing, and outright abusing the masses. And that story doesn’t end with this game being taken down … it ends with the winner going back to it.

In this sense, we witness a form of Stockholm Syndrome where people who get abused end up identifying with their abusers. And that’s kind of the goal of the series: The viewers end up enjoying watching this sick form of entertainment the same way the VIPs enjoy watching people getting killed. Then, they feel dead inside.
I’ll pass on this one

Anyone see the latest Chappelle stand up?

I didn't know there was one in the works until I read the criticisms and condemnations from certain groups, like GLAAD. I have noticed that his humor is different from his pre-hiatus days, and that's understandable since that was almost 15 years ago and a lot has changed. But I also felt that he began to cater to a certain demographic of people that wanted a non-white person that is anti-PC. There are plenty of those but not a celebrity at the level of Dave Chappelle.

I remember when he spoke up about leaving his own show abruptly and one reason he gave was that he felt some people were laughing at the racism portrayed in his skits and felt emboldened by it because it was done by a black person. They completely ignored what he was satirizing and just memed his punchlines.

That's why it was odd for me to hear him poke fun at the LGBT community. There were also a few other jokes he made that you knew resonated with the "anti-PC/woke" group than it would with everyone else, like fans of his work from his show and his standups from the early 2000s. Basically, the type of people that made him uncomfortable at what they were laughing at in 2005 are the very same people it felt like he was catering to now.

I went in to the special having read the outrage pieces on him "punching down" at trans people and there were some quotes from his show that made me think he had gone full-retard, right-wing nutjob. Or that he'd burn the whole forest down just to cater to those people. So I had my prejudice going in to it and a lot of his jokes early on were huge whiffs. The one about meeting the lesbian couple and hitting on one of them and the other one getting mad at him. Not a good way to begin.

But then he got to the LGBT comments and addressed them and it was clear that a lot of what was written in those critical pieces of him had taken his words out of context. They still had a point but they went about making it in a sort of deceptive way. Dave seemed apologetic and acknowledged how he realizes it could have been taken the wrong way by people who are just LGBT. Just like he realized in 2005 that his jokes about black folks could be taken the wrong way by racist people. And then he told the story of his friend who killed themselves and how them being trans had changed Dave's view on things, but it felt a bit like a "I can't be racist, I have black friends." Still, it wasn't just him spreading his cheeks and shitting on a particular group of people and I did like him saying he was going to stop making those jokes until he saw that more people were aware of the issues that he's joking about.

People love to quote Chappelle's Show lines all the time. Juicy Smoliay, or whatever the joke about Jussie Smollett was, is another one that's been memed to hell. No one quoted his standup from 2020 after George Floyd was murdered, though. Of course, it was a more somber event but he still cracked jokes. Funny how his jokes about race-relations in the US don't gain as much traction as "fuck yo couch, nigga" or "The Niggar Family" or even Jussie Smollett's parodied name.

The DaBaby joke was over my head. I only know he's a rapper but I don't know about him murdering someone before. I was aware of his remarks at a concert a month ago about gay people and AIDS, but I don't have much to say on that segment of Dave's special because I'm not familiar with the DaBaby or his history. I'd think killing someone would be a bigger deal than saying those anti-gay things, though, which was one of the jokes Dave made about it.

The key to enjoying shows that are actually good is to get in before the hype starts. Or if it already has begun, to still get in early on. Otherwise, the memes start flowing and every "journalist" on every blog is trying to give their hot take on the show before anyone else can. As a result, people who haven't seen it feel like they're being "preached at" by others to watch it and like it. Then the feeling of FOMO hits and I don't think the viewer comes in to the show unbiased and usually ends up hating the show. Same goes for the people that never even give a show a shot.

I did watch it before the hype. I enjoyed it. Just don't feel it deserves the plaudits which it's now getting

Probably the same reason why BTS is on Jimmy Fallon every week. lol

The only difference Dave now has is the confidence of a father. I don’t think he’s changed* - just his presence on the stage.

*the world changed more than Dave.

Yeah, I was addressing the "not as good as the hype" part of your post. The later you get on the hype train, I think the less a show or movie lives up to it. It wasn't a perfect show but at the same time I don't have any major complaints or ways to improve it. I'm also not an aficionado for film and TV so my palate is pretty simple.

It was right as the lockdowns began that Tiger King came out and that got a ton of hype. The memes were worse than the Squid Game ones now as far as how deep they permeated in to being referenced everywhere. That was one show that got so hyped up and I was putting it off for so long, I eventually lost interest in watching it.

Tiger King feels like years ago now. We are living in strange times

I really can’t complain. I haven’t watched a single second of the octopus game but I still critique it.

“I’m going through it as a person” was the climax of The Closer for me.

I want to take this moment and go back to “Standards and practices” bit on Stick and Stones !!

Starting early today!!

This is a pistol and not a prop. Every firearm is loaded until proven otherwise! Anybody not abiding by this first rule is guilty of homocidal negligence!

This is a pistol. It’s a Kel-Tec offered in two flavors - PLR 22 and PLR 16. It’s categorized as a pistol by one of the alphabet agencies.. I think ATF. It’s probably super illegal in the state of California. Not where I’m at though! It’s a pistol because it has no stock and the barrel length is limited to whatever limit the agencies tell us.

Last time I checked, it was a crime to put a forward grip on one of these things. According to ATF - a device called Magpuls are ok simply because they are design to help secure the firearm during magazine exchange and not specifically designed for stabilization while firing.

Theze Hollywood safety cult lost their ground to stand on.

They’re activating the national guard to bus kids to school due to the driver shortage but they let billions of revenue just sitting there in Long Beach. I’ll refrain from guessing what’s going on.

You're thinking the national guard are equally as capable at moving a tanker as they are with driving a schoolbus?

Have you got a driving licence? It's pretty easy to move a vehicle on land

I’m sorry I cause that.. The way I understand it - they’re telling us that backlogs are there because of the pandemic. Not just Cali btw. I’d imagine worker shortages is the blame. You’d think with all the drills and simulation they do with their trillion dollar budget that they would put guardsmen with masks on cranes right away. The fact that the puppets handling that issues are threatening further blockade is a good enough reason to resist!

Minneapolis voters reject Question 2, MPD to remain intact

MINNEAPOLIS — The Minneapolis Police Department will remain the primary law enforcement agency across the city after its residents voted against ballot question 2 in Tuesday's election.

The public safety ballot question, which would have replaced the MPD with a new Department of Public Safety, has not only been a contentious topic locally but it's also garnered plenty of national attention.

This crucial decision comes as Minneapolis is on pace for one of the deadliest years in recorded history. Crime nationally has been on the rise, but Minneapolis has seen a major spike in murders since 2019. The shootings and homicides in 2021 have gotten even more attention because of the innocence and age of some of the victims, including 6-year-old Aniya Allen and 9-year-old Trinity Ottoson-Smith. A third child victim this year, Ladavionne Garrett, was released from the hospital on Monday after he was shot in north Minneapolis back in April.
It’s poverty. Kids are jacking cars and stealing catalytic converters to stay out of homeless camps. I don’t call the police and I don’t go to hospitals unless I’m bleeding or unconscious!

Yo remember the Mandalay shooting in Vegas? I was doing a follow up and I’m now accepting the possibility of heavy FBI involvement!

I've been researching the JFK killing, and by researching I mean using Google. Because all good academics use random websites as references in their journals. I've decided that he was probably killed by Justin Bieber, who is actually a 70 year old man hiding as a young pop star
