They know so much about us!

On the other side i think a lot of countries are too humble towards the US, for example the Dutch leader who was humble and happy as a puppy when he came to visit Bush in the White House. And also the United Nations who were just screwed by Bush like they were nothing with the Iraq war.

Britain refused to get involved in Vietnam & all of a sudden our economic ties with the US became more strained.

Coincidence, or spiteful?

You say that, but the name 'hot dog' came about the same way. Prior to World War I, Americans called them Frankfurters, but they changed the name when they went to war with Germany. And it stuck.

yeah I know about that, but after all, it's jsut a name... but some make a big deal out of it. :)

and I agree with that other dude, to boycot anyone that doesn't agree with you isn't exactly what I'd expect from a country that calls itselfs "land of the free" - anyway, we are a lil off topic, aren't we?

It works two ways, though. First off, Americans are generally very egocentric and only care about the States.

But second, how often will an American hear about Holland on the news? Or about Portugal? Or Peru?

And how often do we Europeans get bombarded by news from the States?

Exactly.

It doesn't excuse most Americans not knowing where the fuck China is. (yes, they exist).

P.S. Such behaviour isn't exclusive to Americans however. A while ago I saw a documentary on Belgians given a map (of fucking Belgium itself) and were asked about Belgium's provinces.

HOLY

FUCK

We Dutch have this stereotype about Belgians being stupid and all, and well, for this documentary they really pulled open a can of the most stupid. There was this one dude who thought the map of his own damn country represented Europe.

uuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuugh

Have you ever noticed how people from other countries know so much about the USA, but we hardly know anything about them? Its a weird thought.

Like, for example, Amara knows Arkansas is state in the USA. I would need a few moments to find Australia on a world-map. Sure, I could find it. Its somewhere down south. That's all I know.

Everyone knows where NY and LA are, but I wouldn't be able to point out London on a UK map. I hardly even know what countries constitute the UK.

I don't know a single state/province in any other country. But people from other countries readily know a few US states and where they are. Canadians know President Bush, but does anyone know the Canadian President/King/Queen or whatever they have over there?

Its a shame! I know I am not the only one in the USA who is this oblivious, but I am sure most people won't fess up.

we learn geography at school

^
When I did geography I was never taught about where countries are.

Volcanic, global warming, etc, etc were what we did in geography.

American people think they are the sh*t but they don't know what's going on outside of their country...The world hate them but do they care? That's sad but it's true...and I still want to live in USA...Why?

well in germany they teach geography and you learn all where all the countries are and etc. Otehr stuff is known due to Tv/Movies and internet. Since american Tv and movies are the most popular one. Due to that fact america has made baseball/basketball popular in other countries along with lots of other stuff.

NBA & basketball are far from being popular outside of the USA.Soccer rules!

If other countries seem to know a lot of things about USA,it's because we are all living american way, specially in Europe. We watch american series & movies on TV most of the time (they are often the best),we dress american way (Nike,Reebok...),we eat american way (Mc Donald's,Coca Cola),we listen to american music,at school we are obliged to learn english and to study American history (slavery, the underground railroad, the secession war...) and each time that dear president Bush farts, there is a breaking new on TV and explaining during 15min how it could have happened and what would be the consequences for the rest of the world...
When the 2 planes crashed on the World Trade Center Towers,on september 11,they talked about it during 3 weeks,24/7...
If a plane would crash on the Eiffel Tower, would CNN talk about it more than 3 min...?
Hmm...don't think so...

Reebok was founded in Britain. I'm not sure if it is still British-owned but it is still widely recognized as a British brand.

The American influence again - unless they know better, everyone assumes popular shit is American.

I havent read the whole thread on this issue... but it must show how narrow minded you actually are penny packer ,to even be thinking about this.. as if the Us is such a superior country to the rest of the world..... and maybe your in the proportion of americans that as many people have said , dont care about the rest of the world and want to hide away in their little part.
i feel kind of sorry for you that you dont know much about the rest of the world, all the amazing places there are, and the beautiful people and things that due to lack of interest or education in your surroudnings you will never aspire to see..

Your post is crap when it comes to opposing my position. You wrote four paragraphs and did not disprove my point at all. I did not oppose any of the points you just made. I actually agree. However, life is more complex in America. Now, try to disprove that and I'll prove myself. I thought you were smarter than that.

Why do you think I was trying to disprove your point? I didn't try and I can't try it because I don't understand your point at all. Nope, my 4 paragraphs were my anwser to penny's post, not a reply to your point.
