Report: Knicks' Mobley ponders retirement

CLEVELAND - Cuttino Mobley is strongly mulling a medical retirement because of an enlarged heart condition and could make the announcement Friday, according to a person familiar with the situation.

Mobley, 33, still has one more heart test left Thursday in Minnesota. It had been reported that Mobley had signed a waiver with the Clippers to release them of liability if he had heart problems.

If Mobley, obtained in the Zach Randolph trade from the Clippers, retires, it would free open a roster spot and save the Knicks about 75 percent of the $18. 9 million left on his pact because of insurance. Mobley, who gets all the money, was obtained more for his contract that expires after next season than for his game.

According to the source, Mobley helped initiate the extra testing following his failed physical. "He's not really focused on basketball, his main concern is his health," the source said.

LeBron James said the cap-clearing deals for 2010 have taken the focus off the current Knicks and said he's become "a distraction" to their club.
"It's a distraction for the Knicks," James said last night. "It's not a distraction for us. We're good. It's a distraction for those players. But for us, we're set. Players on that team don't want to hear about LeBron James or Chris Bosh coming to their team."

Bad news on the Eddy Curry front. An MRI taken Monday showed the bone bruise in his knee is in a bad spot, resting against the tibia -- a weight-carrying bone. Curry, who hasn't played this season, will take a new set of special shots -- one a week for three weeks.

Marbury: Waive me or play me

Banned Stephon Marbury said Wednesday he is no longer willing to negotiate a buyout and either wants to be released or be told to rejoin the team to play.

Marbury's new tact sounded as if he was daring the Knicks to play him now that they are in desperate need of guard help. Marbury actually used the word "we" when talking about the Knicks' chances against the Cavaliers Wednesday night.

However, it may be too late after his recent rips on his teammates and coach Mike D'Antoni. If Cuttino Mobley files for a medical retirement because of a heart condition, the Knicks would have an open roster spot to sign a guard. Sources said they may be desperate enough to consider former All-Star shooting guard Allan Houston, now an assistant to the general manager.

"If they give me a uniform, I'm going to go out and play," Marbury told The Post yesterday. "It's their choice. I was getting ready to go back to practice and play [after Saturday's suspension]."

It was a departure from his comments made on Thanksgiving when he said, "This needs to end. The marriage is over."

Knicks president Donnie Walsh said he expects Marbury buyout talks to resume following Monday's failed meetings. The sides are now $3 million apart after Marbury withdrew his offer to take $1 million less than his contract, which has him earning $21.9 million.

"The negotiations are over," Marbury said. "That's what they don't realize. I was wrong to try to buy my freedom. The money is off the table. I came to them with the million dollars. I didn't have to give them nothing."

A Knicks official debriefed on the situation said Marbury is under the wrong impression if he thinks he's banned completely from the practice facility, as Marbury said Tuesday. The Knicks said Marbury is allowed to use the facility to work out when the team is on the road or isn't practicing. Walsh sent Marbury another letter yesterday to clarify.

If Marbury is waived or Mobley retires, some members of the coaching staff feel the 37-year-old Houston could fill the role. He's been attending every practice and working on the court with the team. Houston, who has been traveling with the team, admitted it's crossed his mind, but only in an emergency. "I feel good, I feel I could do it," he said.

Houston was unable to play any of the preseason games because of quad soreness. Walsh is more eager to get Patrick Ewing Jr., a small forward, back in the fold.

Clippers coach Mike Dunleavy implies Dwyane Wade is a cheater

In a story posted on the league's official website, NBA.com, Clippers coach Mike Dunleavy essentially called Dwyane Wade a cheater this week. "His ability to carry the ball right now, he's getting away with that," Dunleavy said. "He [carries] left to right, right to left, but he just does it fast so nobody sees it, I guess." Dunleavy, who cited Wade as playing in "a class above the rest," compared what he views as Wade's palming violations to a signature move of former NBA scoring standout Bernard King

Former NBA player Blount arrested

HAMILTON, Ohio (AP)—Former NBA player Corie Blount was charged with felony drug possession after authorities saw him pick up a package they knew contained marijuana, then found more marijuana at his home, the Butler County sheriff said Friday.

Deputies watched as the U.S. Postal Service delivered a package containing 11 pounds of marijuana to a Liberty Township address northwest of Cincinnati on Thursday.

When the 39-year-old Blount picked up the package, agents followed him to his home and served search warrants on the home and the address where the package was delivered, Butler County Sheriff Richard Jones said.

At Blount’s home, deputies found a second 11-pound package of marijuana, and another package containing about 7 pounds of marijuana, Jones said.

Blount was charged with felony drug possession and was released on $10,090 bond. If convicted of the charge, Blount faces one to five years in prison.

Deputies confiscated a total of 29 pounds of marijuana, a 1996 Mercedes Benz, a 2004 Cadillac Escalade, a 2000 Chevrolet Sububan, three guns and $29,500 in cash, Jones said.

Blount was the starting center on University of Cincinnati teams that reached the Final Four in 1992 and final eight in 1993, and went on to an 11-year career in the NBA. He was a first-round draft pick by the Chicago Bulls in 1993, and also played for the Los Angeles Lakers, Cleveland Cavaliers, Phoenix Suns, Philadelphia 76ers and Toronto Raptors.

Blount was a volunteer coach this season at Cincinnati State and earned a degree this year in criminal justice.

His phone number is unlisted, and court officials couldn’t say whether he has an attorney.

Marbury to get release, sign with Boston, Miami, Orlando?

Banished New York Knicks guard Stephon Marbury refused to confirm or deny a report on ESPN Radio Friday night that said he was expecting to be released within a week so that he could sign with Boston, Orlando or Miami.

Reached Friday night via e-mail, Marbury refused comment. Both Florida teams have been reported to have various degrees of interest in Marbury, who has been unable to reach a buyout settlement with the Knicks and has been told to stay away from the team's games and practices indefinitely.

Marbury is a cancer... Plus they have a young, talented PG in Rondo, why would they bring Marbury in unless giving him a bench role? Then Marbury would bitch, and bring his drama to Boston.
