If I go to Montreal do I need French?

Let"s do everything straight, a Quebecer isn't a french, Quebecers actually Hate french people, and they have nothing to do with the french people from France, they dont speak the same way, they have different habits , they hate french people, etc.

As for your question Zero Cool, If you come to Montreal and don't speak french at all, you shouldn't be scared, cause everyone understands basic english, it also depends where you would hang, if you stay downtown Montreal or in the Western Side, everybody speaks english, Western Island is practiclly 80 % english people, If you go to the Eastern Side( Anjou, st-Leonard, St-Michel), then you'll see more immigrants and quebecers, but still you'll be able to communicate with them

I know I'm not exactly an expert in english, but yours was a conditional sentence, and I learned there are 4 kinds of them: Zero, First, Second and Third.

You used Type Zero in you sentence (with both verbes in present simple), but I'm not sure if you can use it in that case. Zero conditional is used to talk about things which are always true (like scientific facts), ex: Water boils is you heat it to 100 degrees.

From what I've studied First Conditional'd be more appropiate 'cause it's used to talk about tihngs that may happen in the future. Ex: "If I go to Montreal, will I need French?

No need to reply saying I know nothing about english... I'm not being serious :)

shit, you know more than me...we never got technical...I mean I know what a verb is but past that,...

Is it compulsory to learn it in Canada? Why is the nation bi-lingual when only 6 million or so speak French

English > French.

You know in America, during the official language election, English won over German by only 1 vote.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/German_in_the_United_States

A myth holds that German was to be the official language of the US, replacing English to sever ties with Great Britain. Also the myth tells of how German almost beat out English as the United States' official language, but this is inaccurate: It is based on a failed early attempt to have government documents translated into German. Also, unlike most countries that have legal documents declaring that one, or perhaps multiple languages are official, acceptable languages to use in that country - the U.S. has no official language; English is used simply because the majority understand it. Therefore, it is possible for the language to change if ever there is a larger majority that speaks another (different) language besides English, although it is unlikely because of the history of the country with its historical documents (i.e. Declaration of Independence, the Constitution, etc.)
