Actually, its the other way round. It was supposed to be Gorilla Unit, changed it because of the group Gorillaz.

I could have sworn that the "Biggie Smalls" name comes because of his frame and size, or that's what I've read, at least.

On a program on VH1 one of his friends said that the name came from his size in comparison with the other guys on biggie's crew. It's like: "I'm big, you're small." and then a short step was taken to Biggie Smalls
