Blogs and pics from people in New Orleans

you're talking about one of the poorest pockets in the south. believe it or not, a large portion of the people who stayed had no other choice but to.

Just another excuse. People were warned ahead of time but didn't realize it would hit them this hard. Being poor doesnt mean you cant walk or travel on a bus/car to higher/safer ground. Being poor is not an excuse, being disabled, need medication is more of a resonable excuse not to get out of town.

fair enough, but people also believed in their city's levees which in many ways is completely to blame for the tragedy. knowing you only have level 3 protection and a level 5 is always around the corner is like playing roulette with an uzi.

The average Joe does not really know the impact untill it's hjit. People on the street are not educated enough to know exactly how bad the hurrican will be and they didn't know that the city flood defences would cave in like that. Y'ou don't know how sweet the mango is, untill you taste it yourself'. Besides , there's been some reports that the barrier that caved in needed work doing to it and the city never paid for it.
Other than that, people naturally don't like to leave their homes, many hurricanes have hit and people survive so why would this have been different to the average Joe. Oh yes, we now know that waves hit as well and flood barriers broke.
THe state should have organised buses to actually take these people somewhere. To evacuate 250,000 people is the duty of the state. These residents didn't even have money for food, where would they have gotten accomodation.

Seriously, i'm more and more convinced that if this had hit Texas then none of these problems and breakdown in the operation of saving people would have happened.

I think this is what happened. Because where i'm from people know what to expect so i guess we are better off. Unfortunately though nobody warned the people enough.

Get in the van your an idiot. How can a poor person afford gas for a car? No fuck that, how can they afford the car in the first place? Afford a ticket for a bus? Afford a ticket for a train? Oh but they can walk to higher ground. So they are going to walk to an area on higher ground, outlast the 140mph wind and rain, run from the water coming, and put themselves in the position they are in right now. Or they can stay at home, go to the Super Dome, thinking that it would be a safe shelter like it was advertised. The fuck, I don't think you understand the meaning of poor. Stop being so fucking stupid and stop trying to blame poor people for being poor. Thats like blaming a kid in a 3rd world country for starving. Get the fuck out of here.

Wow im an idiot oh no there goes my internet career. Ok I'll analyze what you said...

Seriously think about it if they can't afford a ticket for a bus why can they afford to live in a house/apartment? Pay their utility expenses? Watch TV, listen to the radio? Here I'll use common sense, how do they go to work everyday? (take a minute to think about it) Use common sense. The only way I see it if they are actually destitute i.e. homeless, just wanted to protect their property, or didin't realize that it would hit their city this hard.

People living in the area were warned days ahead that they will be encountering a hurricane. So here again I'll use my common sense. Hurricane brings strong winds and lots of rain so eventually it will flood and I will be trusting my levees which are pretty outdated to help reside the flood? Did it happen correctly? Talk to anyone living in Florida what they do to prepare themselves for the hurricane season.

Being poor doesnt mean you need to stay in an area that we all know will be FUBAR'ed. And your analysis of the 3rd world country is flawed. They don't have any type of help; while here we do have many opportunities to survive and maintain. I don't think they have a welfare system, food stamps, uneployment checks over there in the 3rd world country do they? So stop with this being poor I can't do nothing routine. Poor or rich people stayed back so what do you want me to do? They suffered the consequences of what a hurricane can do, sad to say.

Instead of calling people names use your head and debate a little in your position. Look at Dante, he didn't call me names and he usually does. :thumb:

You need to remember, these people get everything from the government. Transportation, food, clothing, shelter, everything. Who do you think they will depend on to get help? So the local governemnt says come to this shelter, come to this shelter, and what do hey do, what they are asked to do. Have you ever been in a poor neighboorhood, ever lived off of food stamps, ever received government assistance, have you ever experienced "ghetto" life besides what you hear on a cd? Do I really need to break it down for you, the expenses that you dont pay for, how it is possible to live in a house and not pay rent, or not even work for that matter? Be real, stop puting blame on these people. Even if they did get out what were they to do, wander the streets? How about you stop using your "common sense" and start being a human being.

Just more excuses...Does East LA count as a poor neighborhood? And yes for a short period of time we (my family) were living off food stamps). As for the shelter analogy I have not heard of any shelter until the aftermath of the storm. Also I don't remember people dying in the shelters when the storm hit. I do remember reading people dying in some shelters after the storm hit because the government was not prepared enough to help out. Rather than depending on the government (which people are at the moment) maybe its time to actually do something for yourself and your safety? Our family did. I think I am a human being and I am just stating that there are many options for people to survive rather than stay and take on a type 5 hurricane. Here's some more common sense:

And kudos no name calling!

Oh cd I don't have. It's called an mp3 player :thumb:
