A direct port of Nexus's rom will be definitely available for the Galaxy S soon. Improved ones probably later. Same hardware, anything that comes of for the Nexus S should come out for the Galaxy S too.
I agree that the Nexus S looks better though. But I would only trade a Galaxy S for Nexus S if it was for almost the same price.

I have one that displays battery percentage up to 1% - it replaces the battery indicator AND displays a status in the notification area too. Sometimes it doesn't replace the standard battery indicator though and that's why I don't remove the second one from the notification area. Also when it's there I can slide down the notifications panel and get phone temperature, cpu usage, cpu temperature and voltage etc. There's also an experimental feature for predicting remaining charging time which is pretty cool and turns out to be pretty accurate.

Samsung Galaxy S II experimental CM9 build released [ICS port]
Devs have released the first experimental CyanogenMOD 9 build for Samsung Galaxy S2. This build is highly unstable and is in no way meant for normal users. According to the devs working on making CM9 work on SGS2, overall CyanogenMod is under very heavy development right now including the device specific parts for Galaxy S II, and they would be able to release stable ROM only by Jan or February 2012.
If you are an advanced user and want to have a feel of the build, you can grab the download right now from XDA thread. You will to be able to flash it using ODIN or via CWM, detailed instructions are available at thread.

- RIL crashes on providers with NITZ, button backlight issues, low haptic feedback, sensors bugs, video recording problems,YouTube video playback is black, missing video codecs and a lot of other stuff.
So, this year was pretty good for Android.
Android Gingerbread for most devices, Ice Cream Sandwich released which appears to be one of the biggest updates so far, first lines of worthy Android tablets. Android went really mainstream, and available to everyone.
And phones - first dual core phones, 4,2+ inch display phones and slimmer than ever before smartphones.
I think the Galaxy S2 is the most notable phone of 2011 since it rocks all around new components - cpu, display, camera and is slim too.
Xperia Arc made a fashion statement, was Sony's comeback and had a great camera too.
Also, I think that LG 2X despite not being too successful is worth mentioning since it started the whole dual core thing.
And LG Swift Black, despite not packing anything special was probably the best mid-end. It looks good, in its thickest point its still the slimmest smartphone available in Europe/US, packs a 4inch IPS LCD and is inexpensive for what it offers - and it offers a complete Android package.
On December 2010 when we heard speculations and leaked specs of phones with high end, dual core cpus and 1080p recording, 720p screens, we'd call them fake.
Now I wonder what's to come in 2012.

Still debating whether to put Android on my TouchPad. I managed to get PDF scans of my books and PowerPoint slides to display properly on there using QuickOffice but I don't know if Android would be able to do it as well as webOS does. I'll be using my tablet all the timeto read outside of class, so it needs to work without errors. No force closing and losing my place in a 2000 page textbook.

It's a good phone. I mean, yours is good too and if you get the Galaxy S2 you probably won't have any reasonable arguments to get a new phone next year. If I were in your shoes (I have an Xperia Arc which is about as powerful, but more fresh to be fair) I'd wait till ~Q2 2012 since that's when new phones will probably come out.
