Technology Android

I'm disappointed by Androidify. I thought you'd be able to upload a picture and it would do it for you. It turns out, you have to create it yourself. meh. no motivation.

SOFI it's more like creating a Mii or Xbox Live Avatar I guess. My guess is that Google are working on a gaming portal for Android and this will tie into it. Right now it's just a cutesy little thing to play around with but I would put money on it having some deeper significance down the line.

Karan (mind if I call you that?) I don't think there'll be a way around it as Netflix are pretty gung-ho in terms of DRM and restricting shit. But who knows. Perhaps there'll be a way with root to confuse the app into believing phones have Qualcomms that don't.

Coons I didn't I just have an interest in the stuff and just research a lot of random shit about it all. I know a lot engineers from various backgrounds so I have pro's to go to if I have questions or anything like that.

I see. Does your job have you around gadgets you take interest in?

Android's explosion is even more significant than Windows, because OEM's don't have to pay Google to license it unless they want core Google applications and Market access.

Anyway.... here's a roundup from MWC.

HTC ChaCha and Salsa Bring “Facebook Phone” Rumors to Life, Announced at MWC | Android Phone Fans

Some of you who have been around here for a long time might remember that the Salsa was originally part of HTC's 2010 portfolio that was leaked in late 2009. Funny to see it finally emerge. I don't much like the look of these devices but I can see them being popular with FB addicts.

Google demos Android Movie Studio for Honeycomb -- Engadget

google-mwc-2011-ext-01-sm.jpg

Google won't let anyone take pictures during its MWC 2011 keynote, so you'll just have to trust us when we say Eric Schmidt just demoed a new video editing application called Movie Studio for Honeycomb tablets. The app was built from the ground up for tablet devices, and it features everything you'd expect: a timeline-style editor, picture effects, soundtrack and audio support, and of course, HD support with uploads to YouTube. Unfortunately we don't know much else about it, but we'll be digging for more details, so stay tuned.

Update: We snuck a picture! You can see the timeline and the playback controls -- it looks really nice, don't you think?

Next version of Android will combine Gingerbread and Honeycomb, arrive on a six-month cycle -- Engadget

Eric Schmidt didn't give a ton of details about the future of Android during his MWC 2011 keynote, but he did drop one interesting tidbit: the next version of Android will "start with an I, be named after a dessert" and combine Gingerbread for phones and Honeycomb for tablets into a cohesive whole. We'll just go out on a limb and say that he's talking about Ice Cream, and that we'll see that Fragments UI construct used to bridge the phone / tablet display size gap. Unfortunately, Eric didn't say anything about timing -- just that updates have been happening on a "six month cycle." Considering that Honeycomb has yet to officially launch on any devices, we'd say that's not so long to wait -- but of course we're also dying to know more as soon as possible. We'll let you know if we hear anything good.

Exactly what I said a few weeks back.

Yeah, I saw. Rogers is grabbing everything else since it fell out of favour with HTC (the whole 911 fiasco when the HTC Dream/G1 was released). I'm not particularly feeling the Arc, I'm still waiting to hear more on the QWERTY when it comes out. :)

the facebook phone idea. great move to cater for the teenage market. i just think the phones will be tacky. the one on the left looks a lot better though.

LOL, i just found out today that Blackberry services is an extra £5/month on top of the contract. Its like saying dear customer, here is your new blackberry phone but until you pay us more fees we wont give you the services that your phone was based on... HAHAHAA. Imagine Android with no Market, apps, GMail, GTalk.. just imagine without any Google apps - that means native google search too. It'd be terrible. Besides, most BB users buy BBs because of BBM so theyre ultimately forced to cough up the extra cash.

OK. We have tablets. Where are all the good developers? I want ports of all the games I play on the PC. I want to be able to get on my betting accounts. Where is online poker. The hardware is there. So where are the apps?

WiFi-only model of the XOOM is set to be $600 at Best Buy. Confirmed by VZW CEO.
