MR SOS – SOMETIMES I RHYME SMOOTH

Mr. SOS’s reputation as a talented, flexible lyricist and proficient freestyler can be somewhat attributed to his collaboration with the Cunninlynguists on their 2003 album Southernunderground. But prior to this, Mr SOS has been leaving his mark on the hip-hop well before the millennium; undeniably so in the battle circuit where he is a formidable force.

This track’s from Mr SOS for President Vol. 1, a mixtape exercise in dropping rhymes on classic beats.

(Therefore I can only assume this beat is not his, if someone can point me to the original it would be much appreciated.)

The beat lifts a sample from the legendary Tracy Chapman song ‘Fast Car’ to great effect. Typically such famous samples drown out accompanying instruments and detract from vocals, but it’s successfully paired with a steady bass line and some shuffling snares that make the instrumental a relaxed, casual affair.

‘Sometimes I Rhyme Smooth’ has two separate verses that vary distinctly in content. The first is a mixed bunch of casual day-to-day observations – from the light-hearted (“Relax your state of mind/I drive a girls car ‘cause I messed up mine”) to the more serious (“Smoking is a habit/but too much of anything makes you an addict”).

The second verse marks the start of story-mode where SOS recalls an ill-fated tale of fidelity from his years as a young adult. It’s a reflective narrative much longer than the first verse, which ultimately shows that some things are best left done and dusted.

A hypnotic jam with two very different verses, deliberately engineered as a testament to the title of the track and the hook – “Sometimes I rhyme smooth, sometimes I get hype” - put this on repeat and you'll end up in your own state of reflection.

Finally came across the original to this song. I suspected from the rest of the songs on SOS's album that it wasn't his track - it's actually Greg Nice & CL Smooth. Now I love to compare the two versions and to Mr SOS's credit, he did an excellent re-write.

Coming off the heels of 2005's "Smoke and Mirrors" album released on Hiero Imperium OC returns with "Hidden Gems" a collection of rare, remixed, 12" only records and a few new songs. Hidden Gems features such artist as Jay-Z, Organized Konfusion, The late Great Big L, DITC, Jeru the Damaja, Sadat X, Da Ranjahz and a host of great producers.

Whenever people talk about slept-on emcees, the name OC is always mentioned. Omar Cradle's history of under-promoted albums and sample clearance issues is familiar to anyone who knows their hip-hop history. In 1994 his classic debut album Word…Life knocked the wind out of people's chests and put the Bushwick, Brooklyn emcee on the map. But somehow after 13 years, 5 solo albums, 1 group album and a dozen movie soundtrack inclusions, OC has remained largely unnoticed by the masses.

Throughout his career OC has giving the world; Word…Life, Jewelz, Bon Appetit, Star Child, Smoke and Mirrors and collaborated with his DITC crew on the Diggin' In The Crates self titled album amongst several 12" singles. Through ever album process there was tracks that didn't make the album some became 12" singles and other never seen the light of day or got remixed. To hold his fans over til the next album and give all the die hards a chance to complete their OC collection OC's Mushine Inc and Next Mill Entertainment created "Hidden Gems". Hidden Gems shows the evolution of the artist known to us as OC, from the first to last track is vintage OC that you fell in love with from Fudge Pudge. Hidden Gems is packed with unreleased songs, rare 12" songs, and a few new joints exclusively for your listening pleasure.

The first single "The Inventor" b/w "Yes Sir" f/ Sadat X, impacting at radio February 7th and hitting shelves February 27th.

FIVE YEARS AGO Redman had his biggest hit with the Rockwilder-produced “Let’s Get Dirty” and then he was gone. Well, not all the way gone. He was doing the acting thing with Method Man on the Red & Meth TV series while at the same time putting together a crew called the Gilla House Movement.

Now Red is gearing up to introduce his crew to the world as well as drop a new album, Red Gone Wild, in March on Def Jam Recording and will feature artists like Eminem, Scott Storch, Erick Sermon, Snoop Dogg and Timbaland, among others.
