11/12 Premier League thread

I don't know. We have two tough games in Chelsea and Arsenal next.

Arsenal had such a better run in also, not sure how they fucked it up.

I can't see Chelsea taking 3 points from United. But Chelsea's remaining other games are easier than United's.

Will Liverpool make 4th? Kenny has been amazing. I can't believe it. I thought he'd be another Keegan, well off the pace. But he's brilliant. He's making me like the Scousers, and we can't have that. I usually fucking hate them.

Bookies already paying out on Manchester United winning the Premier League, would be funny if Chelsea won. Well actually it wouldn't but you get my drift..

arsenal have messed up every chance they have had to capitalise. they should be top of the table with a clear margin by now. they drew all their games in hand and today they lost again. im so frustrated with them. but i rate the way chelsea have kept going. the title is united's. but im really hoping for a chelsea win against united so that it goes down to the wire.

Why Michael Owen deserved everything that came his way
by Scott Wilson

WHEN people discover I'm a sports writer, there's generally one thing they want to know. 'Who's the nicest person you've dealt with, and who's the person you've had least time for?'

Having spent seven-and-a-half years on The Northern Echo, there's plenty of people that fall into the first camp so it's incredibly hard to give an answer.

The second part of the query, however, is rather easier to respond to. One person stands out a mile - and to my mind, he got exactly what he deserved on Tuesday night.

"I knew I would get booed as that's what a lot of fans do," said Michael Owen, after his substitute appearance at St James' Park was accompanied by a chorus of catcalls. "But if they knew the facts, then they may have a different opinion."

Okay Michael, well here are some facts to be going on with.

In his four years at Newcastle United, Owen earned just short of £5m. He scored 30 goals and, in his final season, was unable to prevent the Magpies being relegated into the Championship.

He was also thoroughly objectionable from first moment to last.

The days of journalists and footballers rubbing shoulders as equals are long gone, but in my experience, the vast majority of players at Newcastle, Sunderland and Middlesbrough have done their best to assist the local and regional press.

They might not like us - particularly when they've just been given four out of ten on a Monday morning - but they accept that papers like The Northern Echo are a valuable link to the supporters that pay their wages.

Not Owen. From the moment he arrived in the North-East, Newcastle's record signing made it quite clear that he had absolutely no interest in speaking to the local media.

Interview requests were repeatedly turned down. Post-match questions were assiduously ignored. The entire regional press pack, not just The Northern Echo, were treated with a mixture of arrogance and contempt.

When Kevin Keegan made Owen captain, we thought things would get better. Instead, they became worse.

As Newcastle careered towards the Championship, their skipper became the invisible man, unable to affect things on the pitch because of injury, unwilling to display the leadership that was required off the park.

Gradually, supporters sensed an indifference to the club's plight, a lack of empathy for Newcastle United as an institution and a refusal to even begin to understand what the club means to the city and its surrounding region.

I could give dozens of examples of Owen being objectionable, but I think this one sums it up best.

Ahead of a derby game with Sunderland, we discovered that Owen had played in the same district youth team as Danny Collins.

I headed off to North Wales and interviewed the pair's teachers and some of the coaches who had guided them through their careers in youth football.

A few days later, I spoke to Collins, who could not have been more helpful as he reminisced about his youth, dug out a few personal old photographs and conveyed a great respect for the volunteers who had helped him as a youngster.

The hope was that Owen would do the same. Three interview requests went in to the player, his agent and Newcastle's media office. All three were turned down.

Even when we promised to ignore anything relating to the derby, and offered to only ask questions relating to his time in the same team as Collins, our pleas were rebuffed.

A day before the piece was due to run, my colleague, Paul Fraser, spotted Owen in the car park at Newcastle's training ground.

He introduced himself to the striker - four years on Tyneside, and he still didn't know who any of the local reporters were - and outlined the piece we had prepared.

"We'd just like to ask you about some of the people who worked with you at that time," he said. "Do you remember a guy called Cledwyn Ashford who managed your old Deesside football team? What impact did he have on your career?"

Owen looked Paul up and down. "No impact at all". And with that, his car door slammed shut.

That's why the booing on Tuesday night was one of my favourite moments of the season so far.

Meh, when he decided to sign for ManUtd, I didn't even bother having a reaction. Screw him, he's not worth it.

Leaving for Real to win trophies, not win anything and move to Newcastle was enough for me...

Do we get to hear Owen's side of the story? Or should we all wish hate towards him.

I haven't met him. I have no actual opinion of him. But... He is entitled to turn down any interview request he chooses to. The press in this country are vultures. They aren't interested in football, more interested in scandal. More interested in printing scandal, even if it isn't the truth. Don't cae who they hurt. As long as they sell papers.

He was unlucky at Real. Fabio showing what a prick he is. He scored a lot of goals for the amount of starts he was given. And was before his injuries a genuine world class player. England don't have many of those. He still is one of the most intelligent strikers in the game, his runs are fantastic. And there isn't a better finisher. He is injury prone, even if he believes he isn't. And he could do a great job for a team that will give him games.

Owen had a discussion with a reporter on twitter last week regarding the press and the booing. He seemed decent enough to me.

As for booing. Your average football fan is moronic. The more of a fan you are (season ticket holders) seems to coincide with how much of a moron you are. Everytime I go to a game I hear how dumb they are. The racism, the abuse. Booing someone for any reason.

Why boo a footballer because they cheat on their wife? Why give a fuck? My conclusion is jealousy.

I believe Terry and Rooney deserve all the money they get. Good on them. If they cheat on their wives and they stay. Shows how foolish and shallow the women are. Can't blame Terry or Rooney (or the 100 others). Most men would do the same. And if you think you wouldn't I think you are naive.

If I earned 200k a week and had lovely ladies throwing themselves are me. I'd be right up my own arse.

But I think I'm off topic... lol

this is different actually. it was a local regional newspaper covering Newcastle and the north east. the fact that he never co operated with them suggests extreme arrogance. Do you think that if James Lawton, Henry Winter or any of those big charlies down in London wanted to do a piece with Michael Owen he would ignore them? He would in his fuck.

He didnt really. He made some assholish comments. he is a moron. All he ever cared about was himself and playing for England. not for the success of England but for his own personal publicity and success.

You do have a point there. THe woman wouldnt leave them because they are in a privilaged position being with these guys.

have many of the Spanish national team been exposed for cheating on their wives? im just curious.

Not that I am aware of. But that doesn't mean it doesn't happen. The Paps in Uk are pretty bad though. Not the same in Spain.

There are massive social and economic differences between Spain and England though. Spain is quite a few years behind in many areas. But I love how Spain is. I would move there, as some parts are amazing. Less crime. Nicer people than in England.

If Michael Owen doesn't want to help out local newspapers though, it's not really up to us to say he should. It may form your opinion of him, but we don't know all the circumstances on his life.

He has never come across as courting the publicity and limelight to me though. But.... Is he shagging Imogen? I know most say Giggs, but I have also heard Owen. And someone else is pretty adamant it is a Man City player, but wouldn't say who...

I know in Italy players have been exposed for cheating on their wives, but it seems like when it happens in England it takes on a really ugly form. Not that cheating is an appealing thing in anyway, but in England they make them out to look like child murderers. I never understood why the pap and media in general is so invasive in England.
