I went to see the game at Old Trafford and...it was a mixed bag.
The Good:
Rooney was fantastic. His touches, movement, passing...everything. Man of the match for me. There were times when he should have gone for goal but opted to pass, but if Saha had finished those chances then it wouldn't have mattered.
Carrick; probably his best game for United so far, unlocked the defence with some clever passing. Had a nice shot on goal too, that drew a good save.
Vidic and Brown both put in a couple of crunching tackles and strong headers
Scholes scored a cracking goal, and a lot of United's play came through him. Played a lot of one-twos with Rooney and Carrick
Van Der Sar looked a little sloppy warming up, and when collecting a couple of balls early on, but he was quick off his line and he made one great save to deny a certain goal.
Solskjaer looked good when he came on, playing in Fletcher and O'Shea and putting in some crosses. He's really turned back the years.
Richardson was used how I think he should be - a late substitute to inject some pace. He's speedy as a mofo, though his goal was lucky. Still, looked bright.
The Bad:
Saha had an off day. He couldn't put away a couple of 1-on-1's and he never really contributed
O'Shea was absolutely dreadful, until he got himself the goal. Then he was just mediocre.
Ronaldo had a bad game. When he actually got the ball, his decisions were poor. A couple of his shots ended up by the corner flag. Some nice touches and passes, but not enough.
The Other:
Fletcher's passing ran the gamut; sometimes he'd give it away easily and sometimes he'd pull off a clever through ball or a nice cross-field ball. Second half was a big improvement for him.
Evra looked lively all game. He battled to win balls and looked clever going forward. A couple of times he got caught out of position, and a better team would have exploited it more.
Smith; great to see him back, and he got involved. Kept getting fouled - and got punched, too - but the referee didn't seem to notice. Ronaldo (I think) gave him a gilt-edged chance, which he squandered. Still, not to fear.
