LOS ANGELES -- The Lakers raised their record to a Western Conference-best 33-8 record at the halfway point of the season Wednesday night, earning Phil Jackson a coaching spot in the NBA All-Star game Feb. 15 in Phoenix.

It's the fourth time Jackson has been an All-Star coach and first since 2000 -- his first year with the Lakers. His previous two assignments were in 1992 and 1996 with the Chicago Bulls, when he coached the East in the midseason game.

The Lakers' 108-97 victory over the Clippers means they've clinched at least a tie for the best record in the Western Conference through Feb. 1. The San Antonio Spurs are five games back at 28-13. Jackson earns the spot to coach the West All-Stars since San Antonio's Gregg Popovich has coached an All-Star team more recently, in 2005.

Head coaches for the East and West All-Star teams are based on the best winning percentage in each conference. Last year's coaches, Boston's Doc Rivers and New Orleans' Byron Scott, are not eligible.

The 63-year-old Jackson is in his ninth year as coach of the Lakers. He coached the Bulls for nine seasons, leading them to six championships. He has three with the Lakers, giving him nine overall and a tie with former Boston coach Red Auerbach for the record. Jackson had a record 193 postseason wins.

This guarantees the WEST a win.

A European basketball power may be willing to broker a deal that would lead to Stephon Marbury's release from the New York Knicks, according to the New York Daily News.

According to reports out of Athens, Greece, the team Olympiakos is interested in signing Marbury, who has been banished from the Knicks since Dec. 1.

Olympiakos suffered a key loss this week when former Atlanta Hawk Josh Childress came down with a sports hernia that could sideline him for the next two months.

Olympiakos may be willing to pay a portion of Marbury's salary. The Knicks will likely wait until after next month's trading deadline, on Feb. 19, before making a decision on Marbury's future. If Marbury is released after March 1 he would not be eligible for the playoffs.

Garden chairman James Dolan may be willing to release Marbury if the exiled point guard gives back $2 million of his $20.8 salary, WFAN radio reported Wednesday.

The station's afternoon host, Mike Francesa, said he gathered that information during a causal conversation with Dolan. The Knicks say that Dolan doesn't recall saying that and reiterated that Dolan has given team president Donnie Walsh the authority to decide Marbury's future.

Marbury has said that he's willing to give back only $1 million. There has been increasing animosity between the two sides over the last six weeks, highlighted by Marbury's decision to attend a Lakers-Knicks game in Los Angeles. Marbury also stormed out of a meeting with Walsh after 15 minutes.

I guess if the Lakers can't have him, nobody can have him. :) At least i'm glad boston cant have him. haha, He can make some good euros in greece.

McGrady said he'll miss Friday's game and won't play in the All-Star Game if he's voted onto the West roster.

"I felt pretty good today after practice; I'll try to get another one in on Saturday and we'll see where it goes," McGrady said. "I'm not ready to play in a regular game with my team, so All-Star night, thinking about that, it's not even a question."
