Non-Urban Music Music from your childhood.

Okay, so to me music was always something special. When I was very little listening to the music was one of my favorite activities. I also associate songs with nice or worse moments. Sometimes when I think about great times when I was a kid I can remember particular tracks in my mind.

So when I was a really really small kid I used to listen to a lot of 70s/80s rock and pop artists from Smokie and Beatles to Bon Jovi. When I was 9 or 10 I began to listen to the music I've heard on summer beach parties. It was unbelievable at that time - Ace of base, Snap etc. It had a vibe I couldn't ever find in any music till this day, those were the best parties I can remember (tho I was a small kid at that time) and I'm still looking for similar music from that period without much success (if anybody knows what I'm talking about hit me up with some nice tracks ).

Okay enough of talking, this is a mix of songs I recall that I loved at that time, they are not too deep but Ace of Base was damn well for parties and listening to this makes me reminisce over all those childhood years and hottest beach parties

All I used to listen to when I was younger was Michael Jackson and Kylie Minogue, I'd listen to Dire Straits as well because that music was on in the house all the time. I went on to listen to 2unlimited, real2real, prodigy and other different dance music. I listened to happy hardcore for a brief period then came Rap. I still have the original Bad album by MJ in cassette form. I should save it and sell it in years to come when they are rare and collectable

90s dance music was the shit (even though this is like 1999-2000). Such a euphoric feeling to it. When they play it in clubs here the whole place goes nuts and it's like everyone in the club knows each other. lol.

Man that's crazy that you mentioned 'Bad' Yeshua. That's my ultimate number one album from my childhood for sure.

My dad took me to a video store at the age of 3. Now most kids would probably pick up some cartoons or something as their first video. But me? Well, I was raised in a family of musicians, so my very first and favorite childhood video that I watched probably at least once every day for the better part of a decade was - 'Moonwalker'. I was completely obsessed. When I wasn't watching Moonwalker I was playing the Moonwalker video game on my Sega Mega Drive (Sega Genesis for you americans). Also, I had managed to optain cassettes of 'Dangerous', and Janet's 'Control' and 'Rhythm Nation' by the time I was 5 or 6, which I fucking loved and still do. and then in 1995 3T (Michael's nephews, Tito Jackson's kids) came out with their debut album which had MJ on a couple of tracks, and they played live in Birmingham and my cousin took me to the show). The very next year I saw Michael himself play live on the HIStory tour at Wembley Arena. These were my first concerts, and at that point in time, for me, the Jackson family was the be-all and fucking end-all of music.

I don't think any album has more sentimental value to me than "Bad". That probably also contributes to the extended version of 'Smooth Criminal' being my favorite music video of all time.

When I was 11, one day my sister came home with some dubbed tapes - 2 albums, 2Pac's 'Greatest Hits' and DMX's 'Flesh Of My Flesh Blood Of My Blood' . A year or so earlier, I had managed to get some cassette singles of "2 Live & Die in LA", so I was already familiar with 'Pac, and 'Da Funk', by Daft Punk, who are also one of my favorite acts. Around the same time, my cousins decided to play me the debut album by Zapp, starting with 'More Bounce to The Ounce'.....it blew my mind. So when I got to 'Pac's 'Greatest Hits' album and played it.....who do I hear on 'California Love'??? None other than Roger Troutman of Zapp. It's weird how things linked together like that.

One of my first CD singles (apart from more MJ stuff), was Pras - 'Blue Angels', which I loved when I heard it on the radio). Little did I know that we would work with him a decade later and have the same management. Life's crazy like that, right?

It's funny because my favorite artist of all time, Prince....I didn't get into till way later. Maybe not until the age of 14. But no way, at that time in my life did I imagine I would discover an artist that would absolutely redefine everything that I thought I knew about music.For the entire period of me discovering this guy's work, he managed to blow my head off time and time and time and time again.......and that's before I even discovered that he was so prolific, he had protege acts where he wrote and produced all their songs just to get more music out there.....the first of which he plucked at least four of my favorite artists out of Minneapolis obscurity with, THE TIME, with Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis (who I already knew of through their later work with Janet), Jesse Johnson, and very early on (although Prince soon fired him), Alexander O' Neal.

But yeah, in my childhood, MJ is the artist I hold the most sentiment for. i remember the UK premiere of the 'Black Or White' video when I was 5 years old.....Earth Song go going to number 1 in the UK charts when I was 8......... the UK premiere of 'Blood on The Dancefloor' when I was 10....and of course seeing him live.

My early teenage years were more about 'Pac, Prince and Nirvana than anyone else.....although I loved a whole range of different artists from all genres of music.....but that's for another thread I guess.


P.S - I'm high as hell. I feel like a just wrote a big fuckoff essay. Fuck it.

and speaking of george michael, fastlove is a great song too..i think that came out like a year after LL's song

I grew up with music from Bush, Smashing Pumpkins, Stone Temple Pilots, Nirvana, early Offspring and other alternative rock bands i guess. Now if I try to listen to that music it gets old really quick. Oh the 90s!

One of my verrry first cds was Too Short. I remember listening to E-40 "Things'll never change" Nas, Spice 1, DMX, Wu-tang...and then I think Master P started coming out and I listened to Mystikal and Silkk the Shocker lol. I was probably in 8th grade before I started listening to RnB or anything other than rap.
