the difference between rappers and mc's

To me every MC is a rapper but not every rapper is an MC.
Denying a rapper the label MC is a little hard at times but to use an example that was used before Souljah Boy is not an MC. Puff Daddy and Dr. Dre are not MCs.
Souljah Boy just makes pop music that happens to be in the form of Hip-Hop music.

It's kind of like the difference between Britney Spears and Robert Plant. Britney Spears sings, so she's a singer, but that's it. When Robert Plant sings it's an artform.
Every one knows what a rapper is but a lot of people don't understand what an MC is and therefore think rapping is just talking fast. Anyone can be a rapper but the label MC is something that is earned.

But labeling a rapper an MC is often very difficult and pretentious so I don't bother. I just say 'shit rapper' or 'good rapper'.

If that is the case how can we judge Soulja Boy now when the majority of his work hasnt been released? Or how could KRS have judged Nelly? Perhaps both will become social rappers in the future.

I just think KRSOne's idea is biased, wrong, hypocritical, and flawed on so many levels it shouldnt be taken seriously by anybody.
You can't judge something that doesn't exist yet. You have to formulate your opinions on the best, most complete information available to you.

As far as having to be Chinese racially to be a part of Chinese culture, I don't find that to be true. It just seems that way because the country is so homogeneous. Culture is system of behaviors and ideas -- it has nothing to do with race.

Many years ago in America, many people would have said you had to be white to be American. That is obviously not the case.

Well you are right, I guess I was referring to the ancient Chinese culture that I personally find so fascinating. But you are right, but that just strengthens my point regarding Hip-Hop. Like American culture, Hip-Hop incorporates a lot of different styles and ideas from different sources with mixed outcomes.

I share the same view as Chronic. When I listen to someone rapping I recognize if he's an mc or if he's "just" a rapper.
