Nas Thanks Ono For "Breaking Up The Beatles"

Outspoken rapper Nas has applauded Yoko Ono for reportedly splitting up The Beatles - because she helped John Lennon develop his solo career.

The "I Can" hitmaker is a big fan of Lennon’s music and believes he would not have penned classic songs had he still been a member of "The Fab Four."

And he credits Lennon’s partner, Ono, for giving her man the courage to go solo.

Going against popular public opinion, Nas says, "How could you not love Yoko…? She gave us Give Peace A Chance, Imagine."

"When John Lennon left the Beatles, he was able to do that s**t." Nas tells the new issue of King magazine that Ono and Lennon are among his heroes, together with Malcolm X, Muhammad Ali and Bob Dylan.

Nas tries to act intelligent but is an idiot. He's doing nothing but trying to cause controversy so he'll actually sell some records. Calling his record Nigger is nothing more then a ploy to save his career which has gone down the shitter for the past 10 years (since Illmatic).

The Beatles are the greatest group ever and set the tone for what music has become. Had Lennon stayed w/ the group they collectively would have taken it even further.

I hate people that say Yoko "broke up" The Beatles. Obviously Nas is saying it tongue-in-cheek here, and I applaud his actual underlying sentiment.

If Yoko broke up The Beatles, then Courtney killed Kurt, Nancy made Sid into an addict, yada yada yada. So easy to blame the woman, actually the misogynists that do that are giving them more power and not realising!!

More power to Yoko and Courtney!!!

He's not trying to sound intelligent, he's just stating his opinion that he's glad Lennon was able to do his own thing and therefore create some great works--something that Nas believes might not have happened if he stayed with the Beatles.

And I don't think him calling his album that is a ploy, but if it is, so be it. Marketing is key in the music business. Sure, the fans are gonna buy it, buy you gotta draw a new fanbase somehow. If that's what it takes to get people to hear his message, why not do it?

And, sure, you can say he has taken a nosedive since Illmatic, but no matter how much people want him to, he's never gonna top that. Never. I agree he slowed a bit after that, from IWW to Nastradamus, but he dropped some ill stuff starting with Stillmatic. That, The Lost Tapes, and God's Son were great (all classics in MY opinion); Streets Disciple was good, but could've been narrowed down to one disc; and HHID could've been a classic (in MY opinion) if not for a few fillers.

I agree with you about the Beatles, though. They were one of the greatest groups ever, but they had their decade together, which--rightfully and thankfully--has created a legacy that survives to this day. Who knows, maybe they would've "gone down the shitter" if they would have stayed together, and tainted their legacy. I, like Nas, am grateful that Lennon had a chance to go out on his own and create his own separate legacy. (Now, Sir Paul on the other hand...)

just to clarify on above: in the first paragraph, i don't mean that Lennon never created great works with the group (i mean, just look at their catalogue), but that he might have never created HIS great solo songs.

in the second paragraph, the second "buy" should be "but".

and, regarding It Was Written, it did have some classic songs, but all in all, i think it it massively overrated as a complete album.

that is all.
