American Gangster Discussion

Hmm I don't think any of his albums are great. Resonable doubt is outdated but showed potential. Dynasty is the album I enjoyed the most (enjoyment as in: i liked to listen to it), other than that, Jigga hardly has any substance.

I must be annoying the hell out of my girlfriend whenever a Jigga track is on the radio. He can rap a verse of 1 minute and all he talked about is

1) my name is hova, jigga, j-a-y, in 10 different ways
2) i'm great, in 10 different ways
3) i wear tight shit, in 10 different ways
4) i slang .....
5) that's about it

random example from lyrics website:

I love bitches, thug bitches, shy bitches
Rough bitches, don't matter you my bitches
Gold diggers witcha eyes on my riches
Can't Knock Your Hustle for real, exotic bitches
I'm game tight, see it all through the platinum french
frames with the french name in the same night
Pull you and your tight friend
lift your little dress like light wind, hah, then I slide right in
You know the whole repertoire, U.S. to the U-S-S-R
Sexin in a Lexus car
Match wits with the best of y'all the rest of y'all
is like vege-tables in my presence, check it
Reminescin to nuttin you ever heard, Iceberg
Slim baby ride rims through the suburbs
Funds come in lump sums never ends deferred
Get money like I'm down South Wednesday the 3rd, it's on

Summary:
1) bitches
2) im great
3) got money

how many different things can you talk about after 10 albums?
If you can talk about the same things on 10 different albums by being creative, having tight beats and making tight songs, I will listen to it. It's not about having different content, it's about creating quality with that content.

i guess... there are more than 10 ways to make money illegally.. there are more than 10 ways to fuck a bitch... the thing is jay wasnt creative with it...

so fine, same thing, just recite differently and creatively, but that isnt jay... or 50... actually, is there a rapper that has been rapping as long as jay has, and is still considered good today? dont get it twisted with being considered a legend... ice cube cant rap in today's age... jay fell off... nas fell off...

Nas didnt fall off...jay fell off. Eminem is still out there so is Lupe Fiasco, Joe Budden, Kool G Rap, Cormega, and Joel Ortiz.

it wasnt nearly as good as reasonable doubt, not as good as blue print or black album...but its after those i think

i think he should have made it a lil more dark and grimey...some of the "feel good" songs didnt work very well for me

Now i randomly picked Heart of the City:

1) i got money, but y'all peeps is hating
2) bitches
3) cars

anyone feeling me?
i'm with you never ever liked this guy. shit like this is not cool. in school people like this were hated i thought. always talking about what you have, we if you got so much money then why are you rapping. jay's only struggle is counting his money..

Look I am a huge fan of The Blueprint, I actually consider it the most classic rap album ever.

I don't think American Gangster is a better album than Blueprint because The Blueprint is more well-rounded.

But I think Jay Z raps better and spits more real shit on this than he does on The Blueprint.

I don't know much about Reasonable Doubt because I don't like it so I haven't really listened to it. (I'm the same way w/Illmatic I just can't take away much f/that album). Music's gotta either have a feel good flow or a deep dark testosterone giving vibe for me to like it, and neither Reasonable Doubt or Illmatic do either of those things for me.

But damn damn damn if you take the best cuts on this album I think they are absolute classics as far as Jay Z's body of work is concerned.

No Hook, American Dreamin', Pray, Party Life, Ignorant Shit, Say Hello, Success, and Fallin are all absolutely incredible in my opinion.

Pretty much agree with everything you just said. Illmatic and RD are somewhat classics yes, but most of the time at my house they dont really get play... Sometimes they sound great, but the majority of the time they are kinda boring...

i never really liked nas though, so he never fell off for me as he was never "on".

i mean there's a massive collection of nas songs that i really like because they are great songs, but there is one thing i have to say about nas as a rapper. well two things, actually. the first is that i always thought he tried too hard. this probably has something to do with the fact that when i started to listen to hiphop, tupac was one of the first rappers whose music i liked with passion. tupac dissed nas and i never really listened to nas back in those days. i'm not saying this is a fact, but i'm open to the idea. even so, i still always thought he tried too hard to be deep.

which brings me to the second thing i have to say - within the context that i think he tried too hard to be deep, i support that argument with the fact that most of his lyrics are nonsense. he'll change the subject and talk about random shit verse after verse. every now and then there's a line that makes sense, and his verses do make sense, but most of his lines feel as if he took a few lyric sheets, cut them into pieces and patched them back together as good as he could afterwards. i can't explain it any better than that, he just talks a bunch of random nonsense bullshit and at times his attempts at being deep just come off as corny.

some people say the same thing about tragedy khadafi. i haven't heard enough of his solo shit to say whether or not i agree but for the time being i don't.
