Fantasy Record Company

Imagine for a second that you are the new owner/general manager of a new record company. You have the ability to sign 5 artists of your choice (dead or alive) to represent your vision of hip-hop. Who do you sign...and why do you sign them?

I wouldn't sign the best rappers, I'd choose the ones that are the nicest/most kind to work with which wouldn't argue with each other.

I'd choose
1. 2pac (sure choice)
2. The RZA (producer, Calm, intelligent artist)
3. Ice Cube (legendary, Calm family guy but a hardcore rapper)
4. Hussein Fatal (because of his perfect flow lately)
5. Yaki Kadafi ( to fulfill my perfect combination - Pac, Yak and Fatal sound crazy on one track. Beat and shoutouts by the Rza, Ice Cube on chorus and outro and that'd be a perfect song)

ps. shouldn't it be in the streets forum? :D

El-P. One of the most creative hiphop producers in the game. Funcrusher Plus is a fucking masterpiece. I also like his abstract lyrics. His verse on Info Kill is so cool.

MF Doom. No one does it like Doom. Hands down THE most creative hiphop musician i know. He's like the Dre of the underground, he has a vision and he creates it, only he makes it himself (lol :D) and it's not poppy.

Deltron 3030. I know this is basically a group, but I want both Dan The Automator and Del Tha Funky Homosapien as one entry on the list. Because five is way too little.

Nicolay. I just love his style.

Little Brother. I love their style too.

Thanks for all the responses so far + thanks to whoever put the thread in its rightful place...my bad
Alright so theres an interesting trend happening so far...did anyone notice anything?? (not Tupac's popularity).
Ok, so I started this thread so I should play the game as well shouldnt I? Heres my roster:

1) Tupac -- Insane work ethic, driven to be the best, made everyone around him better(outlawz). Flow/lyrical content was sick and he was versatile, he could rap about ethical issues and could also defend himself when he needed to on a track and in life in general.

2) Nas -- Proven track Record, defended himself valiantly in beefs with Jay Z and 50 Cent, Versatility, intelligent.

3) Talib Kweli --Conscious lyrics, sick flow, intelligence

4) Eminem -- Commercial reasons alone are enough to want to sign him, on his earlier albums like infinite, sick flow, crazy lyrics, great imagination...he brings a picture to your mind with his lyrics.

5) Dr Dre -- Takes his time to create classic albums (every 7 years), sick beats,+ with this roster he would have 4 great ghost writers. Has a vision of where he wants to go with his albums and creates it. Intelligence-- had the foresight to know that Eminem would blow up, made Aftermath a shitload of money. Proven track record with a couple of the artists currently on my roster as well. Understands how to utilize other artists properly...keeps them doing what they do best.

Its hard to leave out all the great underground artists...I would probably create another division for underground talent, but that will be for another time.

Preach, you are free to speak your mind, message boards are made to criticize and debate + when makin a list like this you should be able to defend the choices that you have made

Well that depends on shit. How big is the record label going to be? You said dead or alive already, so I guess we can pick anyone. Obviously if you are gonna run a record label, you want your artists to sell records. So would putting someone like 50 Cent on your list really be a bad choice?

If I had to pick 5 of my favorites, it would be hard as hell. It would be something like Nas, G Rap, Az, Pun and someone else. Maybe Big L. I'm a big fan of rappers who have great rhyming ability and all of the above are the best ever.

Linx: Ya the point would be to sell as many records as possible while putting out your vision at the same time. The drawback to signing a guy like 50 cent is that he primarily raps about money, violence, and degrades women. In a way, your decisions affect the behavior/education/way of thinking of your listeners. The drawback to signing underground talent to your main roster would be their lack of a mass audience...
example: what percentage of the population can understand/relate to what Sage Francis rhymes about. However its still important to get the message out there for those who do understand and relate to the music. So you have to go somewhere in the middle in my opinion, or have a separate division with underground talent.
On a separate note I like the choices that you have made.

Can we have groups or just individual artists, if we can have groups mine would go like this:

G Unit
Tha Dogg Pound
Eastwood
N.W.A.
Tupac

If it were individual artists i would sign:

50 cent
Kurupt
Dr Dre
Eastwood
Crooked I

Well if I am in charge of a label I want to make money right? From the stand point of making great music while making money I would sign these:

1. Tupac
2. Dr. Dre (mainly for production)
3. T.I
4. 50 Cent
5. Alicia Keys

Rukas is the first to sign a female to his roster (that was the trend i was referring to in an earlier post), great choices to hit the different demographics.

^^ I think every great label needs a female singer. I think the artists I picked would make amazing music TOGETHER, and they are dope individually. I chose them based on trying to create a dynasty record label, such as the old Death Row when everyone was working together.
