Yeah, for having 32 bit instead of 64 bit I can see that argument, but that's still more on Google's end. And I don't think Chrome on Windows has the extension either.

Looks like everyone's getting butthurt over all these patent lawsuits that they're being passive aggressive with one another by not sharing their services with others.

So what does everyone make of Facebook buying WhatsApp.

I think everything I ever saw as a convenience in Hangouts is now going to be replicated by WhatsApp. We might see deeper integration of WhatsApp with Facebook and vice versa. Notice the influx of Instagram registrations after their acquisition by Facebook? Well, the same thing might happen to WhatsApp; and Hangouts may no longer be one of the only IM clients that can be used on several platforms (phone, PC, tablet etc).

I had hoped that people would be able to register with Hangouts without requiring a Google account - that's what I used to think SMS integration would have brought as an added functionality (similar to WhatsApp) because it's much easier to see all your friends when you first download WhatsApp compared with the traditional 'adding your friends and waiting for them to accept' method.

Having said that, this year could be the year of IM. Google will need to give Hangouts a bigger push if they are to be serious contenders because WhatsApp will take it to the next step and things like Snapchat are making their mark and everyone seems to be trying out BBM on Android and iOS.

Ok, the new HTC One has leaked. It's ugly and totally same old. HTC's flagship for 2014. It's like they're going out of their way to go bankrupt sooner.

We'll wait on the specs but I know Samsung did the same thing with the 4 when it was coming up from the 3. Might be stretched out a bit more but for the most part it is pretty much the same.

Everything that is different may be under the hood.

^ I think the One's design is already outdated and they came up with a new one that looks the same.

In reality the S4 looks different compared to the S3. The bezels are much smaller, the phone is thinner and lighter and looks much more modern.

I have high hopes for the S5 though. I hope it doesn't disappoint. We only have a few days to wait though.

Coonie which extension are you talking about?

Facebook's acquisitions stink of desperation. Fb usage is dropping, so they spend money
on apps that have already proven to be successful. But the next killer app won't come from
people who've already made one. They should invest a fraction of that money into encouraging young developers, and give them investment grants to develop their ideas. Imagine if they invested a billion dollars into this?

Pitts, I wasn't trying to override anyone's opinion. Apologies if it read that way.

I feel the new HTC One will be infinitely more interesting than the S5. Samsung is coasting. They ought to consolidate a bit. The most interesting OEM's to me of the last 12 months have been LG and Motorola.

Anyone hear that rumor that HTC has teamed with Google for a Google Now based smartwatch? Now there's a watch I may actually buy! Google Now is perfect for a smartwatch.

I remain unconvinced that IM/SMS integration is a good thing.

Although, I understand that coming from the UK is a factor in that, because unlimited SMS plans are standard here on even the cheapest contracts. We don't get nickel-and-dimed by carriers like other countries do.

If that weren't the case, I imagine I'd use IM exclusively and I guess that's what happens in other countries.

As it is, I use IM and SMS in different ways.

Now - total VOIP integration into the standard Android dialer? If that can work seamlessly via a merging of Hangouts and Google Voice, that's an idea I can fuck with.

This is the extension I'm talking about, Casey https://chrome.google.com/webstore/detail/hangouts/nckgahadagoaajjgafhacjanaoiihapd?hl=en

It only works on Chrome which doesn't quite make sense to me. Google makes things for its competitors all the time, but for some reason they stop short at extensions. Or maybe just this one in particular.

LG seems to be making big waves, and Moto might be as well, but I feel like Moto hasn't come out with a killer flagship phone in some time. And it doesn't help that most of their phone during the Android era were Verizon-only. Most of the good ones,at least. Only recently have they gone to the off-contract phones, but they still don't quite intrigue me. Price or performance-wise.

But LG has had two big hits with the N4 and G2. It's a shame the LG GPad 8.3 didn't take off as well because that seems like a decent tablet. I think price $349 was a bit too much and I think it was on par with the N7 stats, although coming out a few months afterwards, which wasn't a bargain.

Masta, the S4 looks like the S3. You really can't argue against that. Yes, the bezels shrunk, but that's because the screen grew. But button placement seems the same and the curves do too. It was like the 4S to the 5 in terms of screen increase and how it looked. Obviously the internals changed a good bit and so did the screen going from 720 to 1080p. But I agree with Casey that Samsung coasted with that S3--->S4 transformation. And as no surprise, both still sold well. I think Samsung can get away with this but their S5 really needs to be more than a spec bump. It needs to change in build material, more than shape. I think they can get away with doing away with some of the plastic but still keeping a similar shape.

I use Hangouts a good bit now. On my phone, I have merged SMS and Hangouts. I text fewer and fewer people now. Just my mom or sister for quick reminders or messages. And a few other people nearby my. But all my school friends who are in Canada or the US, I use the Hangouts IM service so I can respond on my phone or computer. I also shut down Facebook, so those contacts were merged with Hangouts as well. I even have one friend on iOS using this, instead of iMessage (which I wouldn't be able to use anyway, but...).

I really would have rathered Google acquired Whatsapp than Facebook. Of all the stupid, shitty, shady things all tech companies are doing, Google is still the lesser evil and I would have loved to have seen the user base for Hangouts grow if it were to be integrated with Whatsapp. I don't use Whatsapp because my one free year expired and I am unable to get around the pay wall screen that everyone says goes away after a bit. You know, the one that says to pay for it, but they still keep giving you an extra month anyway?

Ah yeah, I use that extension on Chrome. I think Chrome at some point gained the ability to run native code, perhaps the extension relies on something like that which other browsers can't handle? Not sure. But you should still be able to use Hangouts within a Gmail tab.

Tablet market is all to play for right now. Growth is about to explode and there's no clear winner on the Android side. Samsung's tablets are mostly garbage. As great a tablet as it is, for some reason the 2nd gen N7 hasn't matched the success of the first one. I think it needs a price drop here in the UK. Statistics may prove me wrong, but I haven't personally witnessed much buzz about the iPad Air or Mini 2 either. Maybe there will be a couple products at MWC this week that catch the public's eye. I'd like Moto and HTC to get back into the tablet market with a fresh design language and something unique.

Yeah, I only know of one person that bought an Air a week or two after its release. I could be wrong, but I think everyone that needed a tablet, got one finally. I think many jumped on the iPad 2 and then the iPad 4 since it was the second iteration with a Retina display. The rest got the Mini, and I know a few with those. No rMini or Air. On the Android end, I think most got either the 2012 N7 or the Samsung Tab 2 or something. I've seen a decent amount of Samsung tablets.

If you think about it like that, then people that bought their tablets 2 years ago probably don't need any more hardware power than they already have. Casual users, at least. And those professionals that do need a better screen or internals, they are the ones with the Airs and Samsung 10.1 2014 Editions. Or whatever the high-performance Android tablet is these days.

I think I read that the sales for the 2013 N7 were not up to the mark, and that the N7 might skip an update this year and instead focus would be on an 8". Did I post that article? But that's unfortunate. The 7" market is lame, outside of the N7. The Dell and a few other big name tablets look lame. I think that same article that said we'd get an 8" Nexus tablet also said the N10 should get a refresh too.

Tablets aren't like phones where they can be upgraded every 2 years. I'm willing to bet that regardless of what tablet they bought, most people will use their tablet until it absolutely dies.

EDIT: I could have a tab open with GMail to use Hangouts, but it seems like a pain. I could never close the tab. It's ok, I have been leaving Chrome running in the background with no window open, and so the extension still works.

And I am rocking my Sprint S3 since 9/2012. Due for an upgrade in April, but three others in my family have been due for an upgrade since the new year. I'm not going to reward myself with new, expensive gadgets until I pass my boards, which will hopefully be by this summer. Then I'll splurge my savings on a tablet and a nice set of headphones and then maybe get that phone upgrade as well.

Has anyone replaced a cracked screen on their S3/4 before? I've had mine since day 4 of owning my phone and only recently saw that the glass was around 10-12 bucks on eBay and they said to use a hair dryer or heat gun to take the old glass off and use the new, adhesive one to make it good as new. If I upgrade my phone, I'll use my old S3 as a test device to see if I can sell it for something. Not sure anyone would buy a cracked S3, even for cheap.

I have an unlimited SMS contract. But still use Whatsapp, because the groups are so good. Most of my friends have iphones, it is an app that appeals to all phone users. Where hangouts is only appealing to android users.

I could easily see that changing though. Something will replace whatsapp and FB can't keep buying any potential threat.

I am still running an N4. I was tempted by the N5 again this week. The price is so tempting.- £240...! But... My phone does everything I need. A new screen and camera would be nice. But not really essential.

I think I'm about to get a job managing a T-Mobile store. With commission I'd make around 50k a year. I'd sit around and sell/look at phones all day, seems like a job I'd enjoy.

Any of you guys done this or know anyone who has?

As I grow older I realize I really don't need as much money as I thought I did when I was 18. $50K a year seems like a dream for a single guy. I kinda want that job now.

I don't know managers at T-Mobile but I knew a few people that worked at a Sprint or Verizon or US Cellular store. They were a bunch of fucklums, though, so not as knowledgeable about phones as you are.

Will you be able to hook SH up with some discounted family plans? :D
