60+ gb's of free cloud storage

adrive. 50GB for free. sometimes unresponsive though. test it for yourself. maybe its significantly improved since a year and a half ago. it was fine for me though.

I use Carbonite for backups. Definitely the best value I found. Unlimited backup for 3 years for about $130

So, does it back-up your files automatically? If I just finished writing a document for example and saved it, does it upload it automatically or do I press a button, etc?

How does it work with programs if I choose to restore my laptop?

Yeah it backs up automatically, Im still running the initial back up as I have about 200Gb of music pics and movies.

It will run in the background after the initial backup and check for any changes, you can also right-click and say 'backup now' if you want.
The best part is that you can also access your files anywhere, there is an iphone and android app and you can log in from any computer. So for example, I can download backed up music files etc on my work laptop and listen.

It also adds a green dot to the files icon so you know it has been backed up

By default I dont think it backes up programs though as it is intended for home and business 'lite' use... but you can tell it to I think

Check it out here:

Let me know if you decide to get it, if I recommend someone I get 3 free months and you get an extra month :p

Alright, I'll let you know. damn jew. :P

This is an issue for me, though:

With Carbonite Home you get unlimited backup of the irreplaceable files on your computer.
That said, your Carbonite subscription does NOT include some services often confused with backup.
  • Online/offsite file storage. Carbonite is NOT a place to move files from your hard drive, to free up space on your hard drive. If you remove any file from your hard drive, we wait 30 days for you to recover it, and then we delete that file from our servers, too.
  • Program or system backup. Carbonite backs up the irreplaceable files on your computer – user-generated content such as photos, documents, music, etc. We do not back up software programs, temporary files or system files. Learn exactly what we do and don’t back up.

Yeah, I know what you mean. That wasnt an issue for me as I only wanted to backup my music and photos mainly.
I have backups of my programs on their original disks and for the program files I downloaded I made a folder and dumped them all in there and backed that up on Carbonite too.

I think if you had the business one you can back up external hard drives too, but if you delete something on your computer, you have 30 days before Carbonite deletes it, so you have time to 'temporarily' store stuff I guess?

Yeah, I know. But, for me, I have low disk space issues because of music and videos and I think buying external hard drives is expensive and outdated so I'm looking for alternatives. Online back-ups are important but right now probably not as much as simply having a place where I can store my files securely and access them easily while freeing up hard drive space.

When you get a job in the real world, I hear, it'll be easier to delete the shit on your hard drive realizing you wont have time to watch it rather than find new ways to cram 10 pounds of shit into a one pound bag.

I tend to store movies and tv shows I really like. It's not so much that there's a huge queue of unwatched stuff... and music keeps piling on. I don't expect to have less of it.

I guess I'm different then with a home network of computers-turned-servers strictly for storing shit I've amassed the last five years of my binge-torrenting. Even then, I choose what I need wisely and still have under 500 GB of data, which includes music, movies, season, programs, and PDFs of books, textbooks, magazines and comics.

We're all different, but this reliance on cloud based services is a bit silly this early into it. Storing documents and pics and a few other files is fine, but if shit were to go down and all your stuff is backed up on the internet (think Egypt) then it'll really be an eye-opener. Not to mention the likes of lulzsec and Anonymous running around hacking government websites, amongst other things.

Flash memory will be cheaper soon. It'll probably be easier to back it up onto a large flash drive before it becomes worth it to back stuff up in the cloud. Large amounts of stuff. You can find 16GB flash drives for $15. Again, when flash memory is cheaper than it is now, why not have your data offline completely?

^It's the airplane vs. car scenario. You think you're more dangerous flying, but statistically, more people die in car accidents.

The likelihood of cloud computing services going offline for an extended period of time, me losing access to them, or anonymous hacking one is smaller than someone breaking into my house and stealing the external hard drive and slapping my cat around (in that order). That's just one scenario. Another is, I have no guarantee when the external hard drive will stop working for no apparent reason. But I agree that the argument for cloud > external HD isn't particularly strong at all. I could be completely fine with another external hard drive (I have a pretty full 250gig one already) but I kind of..don't..want..to shell out the money right now.

Therefore, I haven't made up my mind yet. I have about 30gigs left on my macbook. Perhaps if I upgrade to Lion, I'll get more, like with Snow Leopard.

yeah, that's expensive. I'm not saying I don't have the money, I'm saying I'd rather drink it than spend it on an external hard drive.

What?

How much shit do you have? What I'm saying is you probably don't listen to the 100 GB of music you probably have, and I can understand saving movies and shows, but all that still means you can't buy a 1TB drive (internal or external) for less than $100 and take 60GB for free?

Can you even watch the show without having to download the whole thing all over again? if that's the case, why not just use tvshack, or icefilms or any other streaming website? You're using up bandwidth there too. Might as well just watch it and not risk getting caught with that shit on your person.

I'm not against cloud computing. I just think people that are jumping into it full-on are not thinking it all the way through. You've seen DDL services like MegaUpload and all, delete files because of copyright infringement. You buy all your music and movies and just making backups or are you pirating and using it as a safe haven?

I don't know what you're trying to prove. This thread was started half-serious, as in the 60gigs for free being a joke.

I CAN buy a 1TB drive. I'm just not sure I WANT to at this point. That's the whole issue. It's not a pressing matter just yet so I'm just looking at weighing my options. It's really not a big deal.

Also, I don't think Dropbox or SugarSync wil delete my files if they're pirated. I think I'd get a warning first. And even so, I wouldn't care that much as long as they kept my documents. I do see your rationale. I just think these flash drives and different types of external storage units are like computers. In one year, it costs half of what it did the year before and shit like that, Moore's law, the fuck ever, you get the point. So I'm merely prolonging the time before I really have to buy it.

Ok. I just got the impression that you were heralding something as being the next best thing ever and everything else was shit, like some do on here. I guess not.

But in all seriousness, if you backup movies and music, can you listen to it without actually downloading it? Actually, for music, couldn't you just do Google Music? That should save some room right there.
