Clearly we could all sit here and list Illmatic, Abbey Road, Highway 61 Revisited, and Sign o' the Times all day. Instead of bringing out all the classics that everyone knows, let's post some albums that people on the board may not know. List as many as you want. I think this might be entertaining. I will put stars next to the ones I really really super duper want you guys to hear. Going to avoid rap albums because I figure you guys know them already. By the way, many of these are going to be obvious picks for big fans of alternative/indie rock, but I don't know who likes what on this board. I limited myself to one album per band/person. You don't have to put these arbitrary restrictions on your lists. I've typed much more than I meant to in the way of introduction. Here we go:

Pavement - Slanted & Enchanted
The Stone Roses - The Stone Roses
The Dismemberment Plan - Emergency & I
The Magnetic Fields - 69 Love Songs*
Elliott Smith - Roman Candle
Mike Doughty - Skittish*
Soul Coughing - Ruby Vroom
Silver Jews - American Water
Massive Attack - Blue Lines
Wilco - Yankee Hotel Foxtrot*
The Velvet Underground - The Velvet Underground and Nico
Talking Heads - Remain in Light
Iggy Pop - The Idiot
The Replacements - Let It Be
Neil Young - Everything This Guy Ever Did Before the 80s and Some Stuff After Them Too* :)
Against Me! - New Wave*
Duran Duran - Rio (Sorry. I fucking love it.)
Stiff Little Fingers - Inflammable Material
The Clash - The Clash
Sonic Youth - Daydream Nation
The Feelies - Crazy Rhythms*
The Vaselines (There is just one CD out there; it's a compilation of every song they made, and it's unbelievable).
Leonard Cohen - I'm Your Man
Talk Talk - Spirit of Eden
U2 - War
XTC - Skylarking
Uncle Tupelo - Anodyne*
Whiskeytown - Faithless Street

A lot of you probably know the albums I listed. But there's a few on there you may not have heard. To me, everything I listed is a great listen from first track to last. Give some of them a shot. And I'll listen to whatever you people post. Isn't music great?

Good list Ristol, I have heard and like most of those albums.

I'm about to head out so don't have time to make a list right now, but THIS album is 30 years old TODAY, so I wish it Happy Birthday, and in the words of ?uestlove, this is "the last revolution in soul music before the eclipse of hip-hop".

Everybody should know every note, melody and lyric to this album off by heart....I know I do... lol

Dirty Mind, motherfuckers

Ristol - that list is really, really fucking good, although i would switch out "roman candle" for "either/or"

anyways, when you said lp's i literally thought LP's (vinyls) so i'll list some of the vinyls i have laying around that people should listen to....

Arcade Fire - Funeral
The Flaming Lips - Yoshimi Battles the Pink Robots
Bon Iver - For Emma, Forever Ago
The Gaslight Anthem - The '59 Sound

I especially recommend The Gaslight Anthem if you like the New Jersey sound. I've heard this album described as "If Bruce Springsteen made the best punk influenced album of his career."

OK Computer has a very plausible claim to the title of Best Rock Album Ever. I wouldn't put it at no. 1, but it's got a plausible claim.

Shit, i havent heard a LOT of your list. Then again, i'm not that into indie rock type of stuff.

Anyway, own small list of what i think are very relevant albums:

DJ Shadow - Endtroduction *
REM - Everybody Hurts *
DIO - Holy Diver
Stooges - Raw Power
Iron Maiden - Powerslave *
A proper "best of" from Jefferson Airplane
Megadeth - Rust in peace
Nirvana - Nevermind *

I can name a whole lot of, perhaps more interesting or relevant, stuff but its no in album form. As in, I think everyone should hear some good John Lee Hooker or some good Brahms, but they didn't really make "albums".

Well, it's rock in that Radiohead is nominally a rock band. I understand what you're saying; they play everything, but wouldn't you say the guitars and drums are the skin and bones of that album? Their later stuff isn't like that, but I think The Bends and OK Computer are almost straightforward rock albums. Again though, I understand what you're saying. I like talking music with you, Duke.

Little Skittle: I knew someone would say that about Roman Candle. I admit that most of the other albums are better. But Roman Candle is a part of my musical family. It's this ragged, lo-fi album that he literally recorded in his basement. Just him and his guitar. Sure, his songwriting grew stronger and his albums grew more unified in theme, but none of his other stuff affects me as viscerally as Roman Candle. It's a very personal album for me.

No i guess you're right. Just gave it a real quick run-around from an objective standpoint and the majority of Ok Computer is pretty rocky in it's set-up.

Then again, Radiohead often blurs the line between rock and pop. It's always properly depressing, though, haha. I'm generally not a big fan of bands that have a depressing sound (ofc Radiohead made a lot more stuff than just straight up suicide laments, but the amount of feel-bad songs they made is pretty big), but when it's done right it's done right. And by Jove, does Radiohead do it right.

"phew, for a minute there i lost myself"

Also, what do you think of The Eraser? Some good songs on there imo.

The feeling is mutual, btw. You're bringing a bunch of interesting stuff in this part of the forum :thumb:

I completely see where you're coming from..."No Name No. 1" is still one of my favorite Elliott songs...

Thanks Skittle. That might be the best song on the album. I like the title track quite a bit too.

Just downloaded the Gaslight Anthem album you suggested because I'm a huge Springsteen fan lol. And the Flaming Lips are one of the best bands ever. I saw them with Wilco at Madison Square Garden on New Years' 2004 and again in Chicago in 2006. I was in love then and I still am.

I liked The Eraser but found it to have little replay value.

Anyway, I question the taste of anyone that doesn't absolutely adore this album:

Also, I listened to this for the first time in 3 years yesterday and I had forgotten just how good it was. Took me back to when I saw them live shortly after this came out.

Cigaro, Radio/Video and BYOB are possibly all in my Top 10 SOAD songs.

Casey, I too must admit to loving The Eraser but not revisiting it often. I go back to Radiohead quite a bit (In Rainbows, anybody?), but for some reason I rarely listen to The Eraser.

I'm not a NIN fan. I respect their music. To me their greatest accomplishment was being good enough for Johnny Cash to cover one of their songs. Again, I'm not a fan.

System of a Down? Really? I'm sorry to say this--I respect your tastes and all that--but they suck. They suck big time. I've listened. I put them right there with Staind, Linkin Park, POD--all the shitty bands I can think of. But--

I like Prince! I almost put Dirty Mind on my original list but figured it was too obvious! Don't hit me!

I think you need to listen to more NIN. Check out "The Fragile", it's a very epic 2 discs, and I doubt you'll like it all, but there will be some stuff on there that you will love. I guarantee it.

SOAD are pretty inconsistent, but wow, they don't suck at all. How can you not love "Chop Suey" or "Aerials"? Comparing them to Staind and POD is so far off the mark. Linkin Park are great though. Well, the first few albums were. Have been less than impressed with the last 2 where they've been trying to sound like U2.

Well, at least you respect the ultimate musical genius. :D
