She wouldve been 31 today. Altough she had a short career, she had a great one with many great songs. we can see how she and her image developed and matured (also vocally), as her career progressed.

Here are some videos (in chronological order):

Early stage of her career:

happy birthday

she def was a talented artist. she was in a movie with dmx, i believe it was called romeo must die. dope movie.
i know. i remember watching that at my mum's friend's house when i was younger.

i had to get the movie on dvd. it was only £3 brand new.

aaliyah was in another movie called "queen of the damned", based on the book.

also she was meant to play trinity in matrix reloaded and supposed to be in the starring role of "honey" before jessica alba (i think it was) got the lead role.

oh which reminds me - the soundtrack singles (apart from 'try again', which is above):

I clearly remember the day she died. Very tragic.

However, she suffers from posthumous escalation syndrome - the general consensus is that she was a great artist when she alive.......unfortunately she was only a slightly better than average one. There is nothing particularly unique about Aaliyah, she was one of the first to come out with a sound that was equal parts hip-hop and r&b, but by no means the best, she was not a particularly impressive vocalist, and her songs were generally forgettable, some saved by some production that was innovative at the time, but sounds horribly dated now.

I'll say this though - her acting talents far exceeded her musical prowess. Had she lived, I think she would have made more of a name as an actress over the past decade. Hard to believe that her death was almost a decade ago.

really bro? You think she's plain?

I think her songs are awesome. I think she's still above Alicia Keys (by a little though) and a few others.

Sandeep, AWESOME work on the thread bro. you took time.

Thanks.

i kinda disagree, its easy attribute mass appeal/popularity to production. in my opinion she was at worst- a very good vocalist who, at times, was brought down whenever accompanied by sub par production. when she worked with the better producers her vocals shined through the production.

i however definitely agree that her acting talent exceeded her music talent. she def passed before she had a chance to mature in that respect.

In my opinion, Aaliyah was an average, or slightly above average artist overall.

She was an OK vocalist - but she was no Aretha Franklin or Whitney Houston - now those two are GREAT singers.

She had a good mix of R&B and hip-hop - but she was no Mary J Blige or even Ashanti (both of whose debut albums, What's the 411? and Ashanti, were almost flawless blends of contemporary R&B with contemporary hip-hop)

Stylistically, she never found an edge. She was nothing unique and lacked the individual style of say, TLC or Janet.

She was not a songwriter - her debut album was entirely written and produced by R Kelly, her second album by Timbaland, DarkChild, Missy Elliot and a couple other folks. Her third, self-titled album was entirely produced and written by Timbaland, Static Major, Rapture and J-Dub. Even by this time, she hadn't even as much as co-written any song, so she was effectively a front for other people's talents.

Comparisons to Alicia Keys are ridiculous. I don't even like Alicia, but she's a stronger vocalist as well as a songwriter and competent pianist.

It's worth noting that Aaliyah got her break into the industry through her uncle being married to legendary Motown singer Gladys Knight. It was Gladys and her then husband (Aaliyah's uncle) who took her out on the road at a young age, got her an agent and ultimately a record deal.

However, when she went to college herself, she studied drama. I would suggest that this was her real passion, and had she lived, her focus would have been less on the music and more on the acting, where she actually stood out and gave memorable, believable performances.

I like her work with Timbaland back when he used to be an innovative producer. "Are you that somebody" and "Rock the boat" and "We Need a Resolution" were standouts for me.

RIP

anyone heard the one in a million remix with ginuwine?

oh and aaliyah was a different type of singer, not the whitney houston, MJB or mariah carey type where a strong voice would be evident. she was the smooth, melodic type vocalist who would make that track to chill to or whatever - well, thats what worked for me.

p.s. about last year (or maybe two years ago now) there was a collection of about 5-6 aaliyah songs which had leaked and one of them stood out to me, it showed her singing but her voice sounded much stronger. its a little like an acapella where its just her and a piano if i remember correctly.

ok, the beat slowly kicks in. been some time since ive heard this.

I said her songs are awesome, not that she was more talented than Alicia...

Maybe it was the Timbo beats, but her songs are still off the chain.

people are more talented than others in different ways. either way, different people have different qualities and so making a comparison may make one seem inferior to another in different departments.

aaliyah was probably better in acting
alicia is better on the piano
both have good voices
both make great music
both are down to earth, friendly and strong minded (from how we perceive them and through their music).

all in all. i like them both.

Actually Alicia is a hypocrite for talking all that strong woman, don't stay with guys who cheat crap, while knowingly fucking a married man (Swizz Beatz).
