Is it really that good? I don't want to get sucked into the hype. Production, songwriting, is it all top notch?

Also bear in mind that I'm not particularly a fan of Royce, Crooked I or Joe Budden and I'm not sure I've even ever heard anything by Joell Ortiz.

Well if your not a fan of them as solo artists then this probably wouldn't be your thing.

I think its dope though, Onslaught 2 is probably my fave track along with Rain drops.

I mean, I don't dislike Royce. I liked "Boom" and "Bad Meets Evil" but it wasn't necessarily because of his rhymes that I liked them.

I don't dislike Crooked. I have a few joints from when he was on Death Row. They're cool but not particularly impressive.

I would probably say I dislike Budden, just based on the fact that I've listened to a lot of his tracks purely because he gets a lot of praise on here, and I didn't really like any of them. I couldn't name you a Joe Budden song that I like.

And like I said, I know nothing about Joell Ortiz.

Enough people seem to be talking about this album positively though, so I'm willing to give it a shot. I'll check it out tomorrow. If I go into it with no expectations, perhaps there'll be something there that impresses me.

Saigon should have been in this group, then I would have been checked it out already. LOL.

if saigon was in the group, he'd be the weakest one.

as for joell, i think he has the benefit of having the least amount of material out there. I mean, you look at Royce and you're looking at a rapper spittin for more than a decade straight. Joell is that dude who has the most things to say (if that makes sense) because he hasn't rapped about them yet.

Based on their solo drops, I rate Saigon much higher than Royce, Budden and Crooked I.

"Say Yes" is the fucking truth.

...and I only just found out that he is that show Entourage that everyone talks about. I have never watched it, but maybe I will now.

imo Royce's best times were when he was with Eminem.
I used to love Rock City. Joell has the most interesting style and voice. He's not pretending to be so gangstah and all which is cool for me.

Escape Route has the same feel as MM1 and MM2 and I love it.

masta, the gangsta rhymes aren't the west-coast type of gangsta rhymes....the gangsta part that comes through in the rhymes is usually in the form of punchlines. so for example if you were a battle rapper, sooner or later your rhymes would sound "gangsta" even though that wasn't the point. that's the case with Royce, I think. So, don't let that....ruin the listening...or whatever.

Death is Certain > Anything Saigon did.

I quite like Sai though.

Budden's mood muzik 2 is my favourite out of his mixtape work and has the most replay value.

Casey, you didn't like "Dumb Out", "Find a Way", "Sing For The Moment", "10 minutes", "The Future", "Stained" by Joe Budden? These songs are dopeness.

The reason I don't rate Saigon above the 4 is because his content is always on some "i was a gangbanger but I'm smart now and gangbanging gets you killed so don't do it" shit in his raps which is content not particularly appealing. Joe Budden and Royce on the other hand have a lot of introspective rhymes dealing with issues beyond street life. Same with Joell.

As for Crooked, he's so dope lyrically that he can rap about the same thing for ages and still sound dope as fuck. But it was his "rap or die" song that really touched me. no homo.

I think in this case it's more about his image. I remember that he was always using "gangsta" rhymes and that didn't bother me simply because he didn't stand out in any way.
When I think of 2pac as an example of west coast stuff most people know that he was not a gangster and not a street guy - just a normal man hanging with not so interesting types and most of his songs were acted for entertainment but they sounded very real.
The way Royce wants to create himself in his songs and interviews - he even said himself that he's bringing "the muscle" to the Slaughterhouse. I know that it was a metaphor but in various tracks I feel like he's just trying to be so hard and failing at it.

it's been pretty clear for a while that the ben choad doesn't appreciate rapping for its own sake.

not that there's anything wrong with that, 90% of the populace is the same.
