WTF Euros need a license to have a TV

I don't know how it works in the rest of Europe, but here in Sweden they can only see if you have a TV if you agree to let them into your house (they'll come knock on peoples doors once in a blue moon). I've never payed TV-license in my life..bigmack said:

The point of a license is to show that you have the required skill to do whatever with what the said license is. well then i'm sure you pay for something else that's really stupid that we don't pay for. lol. the point is that money's gotta come from somewhere. all countries charge their citizen for just leading a, per today's western world definition, normal life. it doesn't matter if it's taxes, tv license, or whatever. it all evens out.
At least we're not like American TV, where they manage to squeeze 15 minutes of actual programming into each hour-block, the other 45 minutes consisting of fucking commercials.

The TV license has proved itself one of the most succesful concepts in media history. It allows for quality broadcasting, viewing, production and distribution.
The landscape of the media is forever changing - networks do anything for ratings and for sponsorship, advertising revenue, etc. After all, they are businesses, their priority is to survive as a business and to make money. 99 times out of 100, this causes the quality and accuracy to suffer.
The BBC does not have this worry because its income is secure, it's goal is to make quality programming that appeal and are of relevance to all demographics.
The income is used in a variety of ways, none negative. New jobs are made through new programmes, I mean the BBC will pay YOU if you write something good, you can submit to them on their website. There is no advertising. They research, find new information and stories, developing culture. It is a public broadcasting service: it is made for the public and is funded by the public.
The BBC is generally considered the only source of objective news and is consumed by 1.6billion people. Rupert Murdoch (cunt, fucking die Fox News) did a cable TV deal with China; he sold out, removing the BBC from the package because China's so uppity about censorship.
BBC World is an entity seperate to the BBC and is not funded by the license, however the BBC World Service (radio) is funded by the license and in many countries is the ONLY source of news. The TV license is administrated by an organisation external to the BBC.
From what I've heard, it's easy to get fined if you don't pay your license. TVs emit a signal of some kind, if you're listed as having not paid a license, they send a white van outside your house, they look for this signal and if they find it, you get slapped with a fine.
