The words of the Hail Mary:

Hail Mary, full of grace,
the Lord is with thee,
blessed art thou amongst women,
and blessed is the fruit of thy womb, Jesus.
Holy Mary, mother of God,
pray for us sinners, now, and at
the hour of our death.

Amen.

The definition of a Hail Mary:

Hail Mary or in Latin Ave Maria is a traditional Christian prayer to Mary, the mother of Jesus. The prayer is based upon the Gospel (Luke 1:28 and Luke 1:42) and a reinforcement of basic Christian belief in the real divinity and real humanity of Jesus.

It is the central point of the Rosary, a prayer recited by Catholics, comprised of 4 sets of 5 Mysteries meditating upon the incarnation, life, death and resurrection of Jesus. Each of these Mysteries is prayed as a decade (literally ten), consisting of : One Our Father (Pater Noster or The Lord's Prayer), Ten Hail Marys, and One Doxology ('Glory be to the Father') .

I think Pac knew exactly what a Hail Mary was, and this was his own personal version of the Hail Mary. as you see in the words of the actual Hail Mary, it's asking for our sins to be forgiven in the hour of our death. lyrics to Pac's Hail Mary:

"pray 2 God, hopin that he's listenin, see them niggaz comin 4 me, my diamonds when they glistenin..."

"I live my life a product made to crumble, was too hardened for a smile when it's crazy to be humble..."

"catch me father please cuz I'm fallin to the liquor store...."

"I got a head with no screws in it... one life 2 live but I got nothin 2 lose.... we all wrapped up in this livin life as thugs..."

most of the lyrics are angry (yet apologetic) and explain the darker side of Pac's life. after reading the "Making of Makaveli" in XXL thread, I learned that Pac's demeanor during Makaveli was much darker, solitary, and sophisticated than his previous works. the people close to him also said that Pac spoke of his death coming soon, and in his music it's apparent that he knew death was coming quick. I think this, like Blasphemy (which made the album) and a handful of others that probably didn't make the Makaveli album, was another public plea of forgiveness to God before Pac's time on this earth was expired. look at the last two lines of the actual Hail Mary: "pray for us sinners, now, and at the hour of our death."

think about it, we all know how smart Tupac was. do you think he'd name a track "Hail Mary" just cuz it sounds catchy, or do you think he called it that because he knew the background and the meaning of the Catholic Hail Mary and he wanted to personify it?

just my two cents. glad you brought this up though, it made me research the topic a little more.

mary, mother of jesus was often depicted as the 'mother of forgiveness', which i think is a very important point to make. she was who people prayed to if they wanted to be cleansed of their sins. that is why tupacs tone is apolegetic like you said. in my head i like to think of this song is kind of a prayer, or maybe a manifesto to god. at first he is more or less explaining why he is the way that he is, and why he did what he did. how he is so close to death already in the mix of so much danger. he knew he would die so he was asking for forgiveness. he tries to explain how he did what he had to survive, with the life he was given.
"hail mary catch me if i go, let's go deep inside-the solitary mind of a madman who screams in the dark - evil lurks"
i think this is a very important line. if you want to understand why a madman cant see the light, its cuz he is kept in the dark... and that is where evil lurks. if we stray in the wrong direction its only becuase we are surrounded by darkness- blinding us from the righteous path.
also in the beginning of the song there is something mentioned making me think that he knew he would die a martyr.
"and God said he should send his one begotten son
to lead the wild into the ways of the man
follow me; eat my flesh, flesh and my flesh"
also...
"when they turn out the lights, i'll be down in the dark-thuggin eternal through my heart"
they turned out the lights, but the lawz are still thuggin eternal.... they are his heart. the lawz were supposed to be his seeds so they could spread to more people. like pac said 'one nigga teach 2 niggas, 2 niggas teach 4 niggas'- thats how thugs dont die, they multiply. so when he died be reincarnated in every real nigga on the street.
"I explode into a million seeds y'all remember me, Legendary live eternally then bury me in pieces Cause they fear reincarnation, niggas screamin' peace."

You explained Hail Mary so nice can u explain blasphemy cuz it's so nice to talk so much about only one track
And after u explained i understood why it is considered his best song

He God said he should send his one begotten son to lead the wild into the way of the man
FOLLOW ME!

What is Hail Mary's meaning indeed

Listen if you have ears.

Blasphemy made the album ?

to clarify,

"... like Blasphemy, which made the album, and probably a handful of others which did not make the album ...." you know what I meant.

Blasphemy is one of my favorite Pac tracks ever, actually... I remember on the 'Making of Makaveli' thread that Young Noble said, and I quote from the article,

"I remember after he did that song, riding back to the crib listening to it. he even bugged HIMSELF out on that one. he got real deep on there, and he didn't even know where it came from. it was like he didn't really... I remember that shit. he was like "damn, you hear what I'm talking about?" he surprised himself with that like, "I don't know where the hell I be comin up with this shit." it aint like he sit around all day and think about it, the shit just be comin out like that. God put that in certain people, and he was one of them dudes."

Lance Pierre also said this was a "weird" song was made "late, late night" in the studio with "candles burning." also, the song features Ital Joe, who passed away a few years after Pac.

I think that article explains, at least in part, the message behind Blasphemy. Pac says so many things in that song that I think are profound, that if I tried to quote them all it would end up being a longer post than the one about Hail Mary above. this song is up there in Pac's top 5 I'd say. besides the actual lyrics, you can also look at the intro and the outro to the song:

* the intro (is this Pac?) is a souljah voice prophesizing the return of Jesus Christ and states that everything will be fine in the end times as long as we're cooperating with God by accepting Jesus Christ as our personal lord and savior.

* the outro is the famous Lord's Prayer which I, for one, know by heart, and which has been the "last words" of many, many people. this is the prayer that Jesus himself tells his disciples to say when they ask him to tell them a prayer to use. according to the XXL article, it was Kastro's sister (who is also Pac's cousin) who said the prayer, and though EDI hints that it was her idea, he doesn't say that directly. I'd guess it was a joint idea between Pac and her, or even Pac's idea alone. either way it was Pac's final word to give the thumbs up on the prayer.

again, Blasphemy is def in my top 5 of Pac's best. lots of stuff in this song...

ok im even more lost now, here's some option what i think u tried 2 say:
2pac was asking to be purified in hail mary?
2pac tried 2 apoligize for the shit he did?
2pac was praying for forgiveness 2 god b4 he died?
2pac was simply portraying a ghetto view of the catholic religion in his eye's?

am still lost lol and probs none of them are even relevant to it

it sounds to me like you're trying to turn mike's post into a school paper :P
read what he said again. i think he articulated the premise more thoroughly than anyone else to date. as with most pac songs, you can't really make a one line synopsis of it. pac touches on a variety of topics under the umbrella of the hail mary theme.
