i have a gainward geforce 9800 gtx on my computer. the other day i downloaded a driver update for it through windows update. i always download drivers from nvidia.com, i don't even know why i checked it on winupdate, but i did. soon as it's installed and i reboot the computer, i see the vista login screen. i log in, see the desktop for less than one second, then the monitor turns itself off. i reboot, next time i don't even see the login screen. it's just all white. i can still type in the password and hear sounds though.

i reboot in safe mode, and everything works fine. it's the same monitor through the same video card so i would think that if it's a hardware problem, nothing would work regardless.

i always keep the last set of working drivers when i install new ones for precautionary reasons. so get this - i format the computer and re-install vista, followed by the driver. the problem persists. i enter windows, and soon as i do the monitor turns itself off. WTF?

i solved it. i didn't realize it but i had an s-video cable going from my computer to my lcd tv. i uninstalled the driver in safe mode, removed the cable, and re-installed the driver again. everything works fine now.

whatta n00b i am.
