Tipping

Noticed some discussion about it on the pics thread, what do you guys tip?
I ALWAYS tip my pizza guy cause I used to workfor Domino's and it was a lot of work and driving (they don't pay you for gas or maintenance) for someone to not tip you and you actually have to count change and shit. Pisses me off. Sometimes I tip ten or eleven bucks just cause I know it makes their day, but the normal is four or five.
I also tip at restaurants and sometimes the barber, not the ones on base though. They're dicks.
I don't tip people who just work a register then expect a tip. I tip bartenders a lot more than my buddies ever do. They work hard and get paid shit.

I tip my hairdresser about 20%. I give a couple of quid tip to cabbies. Pizza guy got a fiver from me on Friday. We don't tip barmen in the UK.

Im a "keep the change" kinda guy, whether its 50p or a few quid. Just like delivery guys, barbers and taxi drivers etc. Dont think I'd go as high as £5 though, If ive to get more than that in change I'd throw a few quid back to them and tell them to get themselves a pint or something. Its really not something thats expected here so anything is a bonus to them i guess.

Though Im going to America next year so what exactly is the protocol on tipping, since its obviously a big thing there?

Tip everyone or they hate you. Usually about 15-20%. But Americans will be able to tell you better than I.

Yeah fifteen percent is pretty much the norm.
I was told in a brief when I got on island that nobody tips in Japan but there is always a tip jar every bar I go in...kinda contradicting.

When I lived in the US, I tipped like every normal American. Back here there isn't much worth tipping for. Generally, here I'll only tip taxi drivers and pizza delivery guys, this is because these a expensive that normally give me change, and rather than fuck about with all that, I just tell them to keep it.

I do occasionally tell shop keepers to keep the change if its smaller than 50p, cos there isnt much I can buy with 50p these days.

Heres an example why its different here:

American Waitress:
Walk into restuarant > "Hi guys, Welcome to INSERTNAME, I'll get you seated shortly" > wait a couple of minutes > "Hi guys, Im INSERTNAME, i'll be your waitress for today, would you like to follow me?" > Get seated > "Can I get you guys anything to drink while you order?" > Takes drink order and returns with drink quickly > Takes order > Brings order > "If theres anything I can get you guys, just ask" > We eat > Waitress comes to check everything is ok > carry on eating > "Would you guys like your drinks topped up?" > Comes back with fresh drinks > Finish meal > "Was everything ok? Would you like to have a look at the desert menu? > Takes Desert Order > Brings Back Deserts, "Can I get you guys any more drinks? > Brings more drinks > Finish desert > "Everything ok guys? Would you like me to bring you the bill? > Pay for meal > "Thanks for eating at INSERTNAME, I hope to see you again soon".

This lady gets tipped.

British Waitress:
Walk into restuarant > Waits > Waits > "Table for 2? Follow me" > Get seated > Waits > Waits > Waits > "Are you ready to order? Oh you'd like some drinks? Ill get them brought out to you" > Waits > Waits > Waits > Drinks arrive > "Are you ready to order now?" > Takes order > More waiting > More waiting > Brings order, foods undercooked and cold, but you've waited so long you just say fuck it and eat it > Finished meal, but more waiting is only on the cards right now > Waitress appears > "Would you like a desert? > After deciding whether or not you wanna wait anoher 20 minutes for a desert, you say yes and wait patiently > Brings out desert > Deserts finished, so now more waiting > And waiting > And waiting > And waiting > Ok by now you're fucking fed up at waiting so you have to shout for the waitress to bring the bill > You pay and leave as soon as possible, no farewell message from the staff.

This lady doesn't get tipped.

I think it's easier to tip if you're using your own money. Therefore, I will not share my views on this.

Yeah, 15-20% is the norm. Most of the time, I find myself tipping bartenders and waitresses because most of the time, I find myself in a bar. If I'm at a bar I frequent often, I will try and tip more than 15-20% because I think that's enough for bartenders not to hate you. Anything above that and you can expect to get a drink faster when the bar's crowded and the drink will be stiffer. It also helps talking to the bartender when the bar's not so packed. The best thing to do is go when they have crazy happy hour, like dollar wells. Then you tip like 100-200% and feel like a boss. :p

Wow, looks like it's another American sport :p

Here it's either no-tip or "keep the change" thing, if the change is not too big. People consider service quality being a part of the place and that servers are paid to do their job and keeping them nice is restaurant's business, to make clients come there instead of picking a different place.
I'm pretty sure that if the bill is 27zl and people are giving 30 they are rather likely to wait for the change, but if the bill is 28 or 29 they will come up with "thanks, keep the change" thing. It's still less than a dollar though.
I think that I tip more than an average guy but I do it rarely, whenever I feel the service was great. It's only popular here in above average places though. It's getting more and more popular in others too though.
Personally if it comes to tipping servers or pizza delivery guys I'm the "round it up to.." kind of guy.

Looks like this would make me feel wrong in America since I eat outside a lot and I'd feel weird spending 15$ daily just on tips, and while giving any tip makes service people grateful here from what I read in America I could look bad by giving a tip that is below average, which is in turn strange to me. "Your salary is in my meal, you're getting an extra, motherfucker!"

$15 in tips daily? From one fatty to a non-fatty, the hell will you be eating in three meals that will cost you nearly $100 (Assuming you tip 15% every time)? Even 30% tips would mean $50 on meals a day. Even I don't do that. You'll be fine. Eat a $15 dinner, leave $3.

But in America a lot of waitresses only make 2-3 dollars an hour and rely almost exclusively on tips. Such was the case when I worked at Hooters. My girlfriend's sister worked there and she wouldn't even pick up her paycheck because almost all of it went to taxes anyhow. It would end up being like $50 for two weeks of full time work.

^not possible. you have to get paid at least minimum wage. most places (unless the pay is higher) are minimum wage + tips. no place is less than minimum wage. if so, and you have legal documents, you're in for some lawsuit cheese.
