Amidst the controversy surrounding the cancellation of his Australian tour, superstar producer Timbaland is suing Showtime Touring Group, a Queensland-based tour company, accusing them of tarnishing his image and ruining his proposed Shock Value tour.
The lawsuit, which is being filed in a U.S. federal court, is seeking compensation for unspecified damages over an alleged breach of contract.
With no official statement released at the time of the cancellation, the 37-year-old music star (born Tim Mosley) has released an official statement through his lawyers, using the opportunity to "set the record straight" for his Australian fans about the "last-minute cancellation".
Explaining the situation further, the statement also reads "despite Timbaland's desire to perform for his Australia and New Zealand fans, he was unable to do so. From the moment the parties signed the contract at issue, Showtime breached its obligations."
According to the suit, Showtime had agreed to pay Timbo a $1.26 million performance fee for the tour (nearly $251,000 for each of the five scheduled shows) but failed to make the required payments. The contract also had Timbaland agreeing to perform for a minimum of 40 minutes and a maximum of an hour at each show.
In addition to the agreed fee Showtime was required to pay for all costs to mount the tour, including round-the-clock security guards for both Timbaland and his entourage and "first-class, five-star hotel accommodation".
The man behind such recent hits as "4 Minutes" and "The Way I Are" has also accused Showtime of releasing misleading information regarding the shows and arranging sponsorships and commercial tie-ins without his consent.
Timbaland's Shock Value Australian tour was originally scheduled for five dates, set to touch down in Sydney, Melbourne, Perth, Adelaide and Auckland. Originally scheduled for July, the was then postponed to August before finally being cancelled on August 14.
