This is my thread

That's good. I heard about small pubs getting hit with $10,000 energy bills. Your new Truss lady ruled out the idea. Which, of course, means it could still happen.

No. Energy is a regulated industry in the UK. There is a government body which reviews and regulates what can be charged. This is based on market forces, mainly. But they restrict the amount of profit that can be made. They enforce price caps. For many reasons the price of gas has gone up. One of these reasons is the war in Russia and the subsequent cap the West has put on Russian gas, the result of which is Russia switching off the supply. This has pushed up the price of gas significantly, which has then pushed up the energy price cap in the UK. This would lead to the average household having to pay nearly 4k to heat their home. And pubs (and other businesses) facing ridiculous bills. Liz Truss has put in a price freeze, which means the government will borrow the money to keep the average household costs under 2.5k. But this money will be paid back by the tax payer.

I don't think she's announced measure to support businesses yet. But she will have to

Also... Liz Truss is another terrible politician who has no idea about the average man and their struggle to provide food, heat and shelter. House ownership in the UK will be beyond most of the upcoming youth. And there is a massive social care problem on the horizon.

I am lucky, I'm paid well and have invested for old age. I don't know many people my age who are prepared for retirement

They have enough power - just not for everyone. :( Anyway, if "climate lockdowns" turns out to be true and if everyone is told to wait until dark.... yeah, so it's more like subways and advertisements take priority during peak hours.

I'm completely anti the Royal Family. But I have felt a lot of sadness from hearing of her passing. Her life spanned many different generations and she lived through an extreme amount of change. But she managed to lead with dignity and was able to bridge a lot of gaps.

I do think having a King or Queen is very outdated now and even if they have very little power (something Americans on Twitter are unaware of), we should probably consign the monarchy to the history books now

A lot of Twitter sounds like they're celebrating her death. They're pinning the whole colonialism on her. I'm sure she had a hand in it but uh....weird time to bring it all up when not many people seemed to be butt-hurt over that part of history until yesterday.

I think it's just the cool new thing to do. Sound educated on history by bringing it up after her death.

There are only a handful of people I'd chuckle at their deaths. The Queen isn't/wasn't one of them. And that's coming from a British-born Indian living in the US.

Yeah. I'm completely anti establishment. But she's a 96 year old woman who lived through a lot of change and helped the Royal Family find a place where they are somewhat less offensive than they have been historically. I would support the end of the Royal Family, but would think there are better times to raise that as a conversation rather than right after an old lady has died

Okay, I’ll wait until the 19th!

I’ve noticed the Royal “soft power” here in the States too. The media wants us to care for Royal babies and Megan etc. but they are not American icons!!

So, I’m guessing we’re going to start seeing Hollywood propaganda about King Charles now. I bet Judy Dench will grace us with a majestic portrail of the King.

Jennifer Lawrence for Camilla?

Bruce Willis for William!

Most British people don't care a lot for royalty. But The Queen reminds us of our Nans... That's basically it

Norway is in the same boat as the UK. We have this monarchy. The king is this sweet old man, and everybody loves his new years speech. The past couple of years, the princess has been dating this shaman from the U.S. But her boyfriend has been making all kinds of crazy statements about women that have had sex having an energy imprint inside their vagina, people that get cancer will it because they're unhappy, and other controversial shit like that. When he recently had covid, he said he had refused to be treated in the hospital, and had instead relied on some kind of crystal in a medallion (that he's also selling online lol). It's Harry and Meghan on crack I tell you! She's into a lot of alternative stuff too. She started this website called "Soulspring" that held online courses. Alternative spiritual stuff. It's weird.
