We have one for books, why not movies? Both are entertainment and hense both should be in the entertainment forum, but I think we should have a list of good movies that make you think, while they entertain you.

Now of course we'll have stuff like the Shawshank Redemption, etc etc. But lets not list movies that had good twists or whatever, but movies that make you think about something or question something.

And I dont want to see Donnie Darko listed a 100 times. Lets get that out of the way now, go watch Donnie Darko (the original non directors cut).

Ill start with a little known movie called Equalibrium, about a future society that restricts human emotion and feeling. Its got a lot of current political undertones, as well as sets right out of Hitler's wet dream. Plus its got some awsome action and fight scenes. Check it out if you can, I watched it last year while in Europe and just bought it on DVD last week.

Memento
The Insider
A Beautiful Mind
The Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind
The Following

Also, I don't agree with the part that we should list movies that make you think instead of the ones with twists for example. If the movie is good, it's good. In my opinion, we shouldn't list comedies like Soul Plane and Harold and Kumar go to White Castle, but more in the line of thrillers and dramas.

If you want to post movies with good twists, go to Entertainment Tonight.

This is words of wisdom, hense I only want movies that are wise, or promote wisdom and knowledge. Something with a twist or something like Momento, does not.

The Matrix (1st one) - This promotes thought because it gives a particular way of viewing/understanding the world. Also a lot of the dialogue is prophetic/philosophical to our today world. Plus it doesn't go without a religious element.

Fight Club - is a mindfuck like the Matrix was when I first saw it. Particularly good for if you want to analyze personalities.

Scarface - A lot can be learned from watching this film.

There is three I would recommend.

Contact

Very deep in my opinion. From the outside, it's a movie about 'contact' from intelligent life outside of our solar system but there's more, the opening scene itself is though provoking, it really gives you an idea of how vast the Universe is and how tiny we are. The main theme is really about Science and Religion, I love how the movie is a sci-fi yet it's real, it's a realistic portrayal of "'what could be the most important discovery in the history of history"

I haven't seen this but I have been reccomended Arlington Road. I've had trouble finding it and a friend of mine highly reccomended it to me. I think it's something to do with terrorism.

^ Arlington Road is good but I doubt it fits in this thread... I don't want to give away too much but a guy discovers that his peaceful neighbor is really a terrorist... I might have to watch it again to see how deep it is, it's been a while. :p

Oh yeah, I've seen this movie, with Tim Robbins. Not a really good movie, I think it was straight to either DVD or TV.

The life of david gale or sumthin...<<especially a good movie to talk about in Words Of Wisdom

Kevin Spacey stars as David Gale, a life long campaigner against the death penalty finds himself on death row after being found guilty of the rape and murder of a fellow anti-execution campaigner. Kate Winslet is the reporter who interviews Gale during his last three days and she is convinced of his guilt and need to be executed, but as she interviews Gale she begins to question his guilt.

The Power of Nightmares (3 part movie, really well done -all about the conflict between the neoconservatives and Islam)

The Corporation (great film, really explains a lot about the absurties of corporations)

Outfoxed (explains why fox news reporting is so far towards to right)

Ghost In the Shell 1+2 (the second film takes a few viewings to really grasp the whole thing, but they are both brilliantly written, and visually amazing)

K-PAX (i saw the movie first, then i read the trillogy of books...and it was really worth while...its about guy that gets sent to a crazy house for thinking that he's an alien...but gradually it seems like he may actually be an alien....its based around an indian film about a guy claiming to be Jesus)
