Teen gets 6 months for turkey prank that injured woman
August 16, 2005
RIVERHEAD, N.Y. -- A teenager who threw a 20-pound turkey out the rear window of a car pleaded guilty Monday to assault and tearfully embraced the driver he critically injured, authorities said.
Ryan Cushing, 18, will serve six months in jail and five years of probation as part of his plea agreement, said a spokesman for District Attorney Thomas Spota.
He pleaded guilty to one count of second-degree assault before Suffolk County Court Judge Barbara Kahn. If convicted of first-degree assault at trial, Cushing could have been sentenced to a maximum of 25 years.
Victoria Ruvolo, 44, of Lake Ronkonkoma, shattered every bone in her face. She spent more than a month in the hospital receiving extensive facial reconstructive surgery and continues to receive physical therapy.
Ruvolo approved of the plea deal and hugged Cushing in a tearful embrace in the courtroom during Monday's proceeding, said Bob Clifford, a spokesman for Spota.
Five other teenagers involved in the November 2004 incident have previously pleaded guilty to various charges, including credit card theft for a spending spree.
