Marion "Suge" Knight and his legal counsel released a statement yesterday (April 5) concerning his recent filing of bankruptcy protection to avoid losing his Death Row Records.
Knight has yet to pay $107 million to Lydia Harris, a woman who filed a lawsuit against him in 2002 claiming that she and her ex-husband Michael Harris helped co-found Death Row, but were forced out of the venture when Knight realized the label's profitable potential.
Since the $107 million judgment was passed, Knight has ignored legal inquires about the case, skipped court dates and failed to reveal his assets.
On March 24th, Knight was court-ordered to attend an April 1st hearing regarding his assets or face the possibility of having the court seize his Death Row Records.
Knight failed to appear at the Saturday hearing and the Harris' lawyers asked the judge to hold the Death Row honcho in contempt and have him jailed.
They also wanted the label to be put into receivership and have its music catalog which includes songs from Dr. Dre, Tupac Shakur and Snoop Dogg to be auctioned off to settle the $107 judgment.
On April 3rd, Knight made it public that he had filed for bankruptcy. On the same day, Knight's lawyers, Larry Nagelberg and Laurence Strick also revealed that Knight "didn't have the $107 million" and that the federal bankruptcy protection would replace the receivership.
According to the statement released today by Knight and his counsel, "the Harris' lawyers attempt to hold Knight in contempt based on his failure to attend the Saturday hearing failed" and "Los Angeles Superior Court judge, Ronald Sohigian ruled Tuesday (April 4th) that Knight was innocent of contempt."
"For the last few years there's been a stigma attached to Death Row", explained Knight in the statement. "People like the Harris' have been coming out of the woodwork and it's been like a dark cloud hanging over me. I've decided that I'm serving Death Row its last meal. I'm setting a new table."
Knight's attorneys are also bringing a motion against the Harris' and their attorneys for their blatant violation of federal bankruptcy law.
